2006 Not the disaster that Halos fans might have imagined during sleepless nights after his signing, but for an organization that has had such success plugging in bullpen arms from the farm system, his signing was an odd one, especially since he was used in a mop-up role. They`ll pay Yan $1.25 million in 2006 to do the job that any number of players in their system could probably do for the minimum.
2005 Yan is successful when his splitter is working, and it was top-notch for much of last season, allowing him to limit his home runs against and post a career best 1.74 groundball-to-flyball ratio. Yan's splitter, of course, has been lost and re-introduced more often than the McRib; the Angels picked up a box of Alka Seltzer and will take their chances.
2003 His stats arent that bad, but the blown saves really stick out, as hes logged 41 saves against 17 blown saves over the last two seasons, and hes 42/26 over his career. Unsurprisingly, he lost the closer job in August, and Lou Piniella wont put up with this nonsense from his fireman, so the Rays will be actively courting closers this off-season. Yan escaped to Texas as a free agent, where hell join the usual veteran middle relief shuffle that Hart seems to like to assemble.
2002 When the Devil Rays made Esteban Yan their closer, should we have foreseen that hed hold the job more or less all season? Sure, hed pitched decently in relief over the last two months of 2000, but hed also posted a 6.60 ERA as a starter for the four months before that. No, we think it only confirms what we learned in the World Series: sometimes you can make all the wrong moves and things still will turn out all right. Thats more true in a seven-game series than in a 162-game season, though, and we expect Yan get his butt kicked backed to middle relief before 2002 is over.
2001 Somewhere along the line, the Devil Rays have to realize that Esteban Yan isn't a starting pitcher and that they're ruining a good reliever by trying to make him one. His only successful major-league season was the one in which he relieved exclusively. His career ERA as a starter is two runs higher than it is out of the pen, and he's barely been able to go five innings per start. Returned to the pen, he can be a good setup man.
2000 He didn't do himself any favors in the eyes of the organization when he played winter ball against its wishes. Season-long shoulder problems followed, which made his usually nasty stuff very hittable. Still, Yan gave more than he got, ranking among the league leaders by allowing a mere seven of 31 inherited runners to score. Rothschild is making noise about having him start, which would increase his value, but I don't think his arm troubles are behind him.
1999 Yan got off to a great start, not allowing a run (and only two hits) in his first 15 innings. He then gave up a run in 6 of the next 8 appearances, and a month later had another stretch where he allowed runs in 7 of 8 appearances. The big problem was getting into a set pattern of pitches, especially first-pitch fastballs.
1998 A professional pitcher since he was 17, he was making slow progress until joining the Oriole organization and being converted to relief in 1995. He was off to a slow start in Rochester last year until joining the rotation following Jimmy Haynes trade to Oakland. From 3-3 with an ERA over 4.00 in mid-June, he closed the year at 11-5 with an ERA just over 3.00. Hes got very good control and a strikeout rate that keeps getting better with age. I like his chances. Taken in the Expansion Draft by Tampa Bay.
1997 Hes completed six seasons of pro ball in three different organizations at the young age of 22. He was exclusively a starter in previous years, but his performance was never impressive. Last year, he made great strides, especially at Rochester, cutting his hits and raising his strikeouts without sacrificing control.
