BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2008 The Twins' inability to find enough major league position players because of a combination of penury, draft incompetence, and stasis forces them to take perfectly good bench players and call them regulars. Although Tyner finally hit his first MLB homer last year, he has no business starting 60 games, and he damn sure has no business starting 15 of them at DH.
2007 Tyner was having a fine season at Triple-A Rochester, but with Lew Ford, Shannon Stewart, and Rondell White all suffering through various injuries, the little speedster got another shot. His virtues shined through, the both of them--hitting for average and running. As the only Twin other than Hunter who can really play center, he`ll likely break camp in the big leagues for the first time since 2002. His middle name is Renyt, which is Tyner backwards. His Earth-2 incarnation is named Nosaj Tyner Renyt. He`s very, very slow, and is teammates with a pitcher named Foob.
2003 Tyner is the exclamation point on the expletive that describes Tampa Bay’s history of talent evaluation. Ignoring Tyner’s entire professional career of doing nothing at the plate, the Rays gave him 694 plate appearances to discover what the Mets knew after a couple of weeks: Tyner will never hit enough to hold down an outfield job. That said, the Rays banished him to the minors early enough in the season that Jason Tyner Bobblehead Day was canceled, and somewhere those bobbleheads gather dust. With the logjam of outfielders in Tampa he’ll be elsewhere next season.
2002 If Jason Tyner batted against a team with no fielders, could he record an extra-base hit? Almost all of his hits were singles, 34 of them of the infield variety. It certainly is possible to be a productive hitter while hitting mostly singles—Luis Castillo could get rich giving clinics on the topic—but to do it, you have to draw walks. Tyner simply hasn’t shown he can do that. One thing he did vow to do at the end of last season was add weight over the winter in order to drive the ball more. We’ll see; Juan Pierre added some muscle before last season, then proved that learning to use it is a different challenge entirely.
2001 Not satisfied with having their own Alex Sanchez, the D-Rays picked up the Mets' version at the trade deadline in exchange for Rick White and Bubba Trammell. Tyner is a borderline center fielder defensively, but he'd be an offensive disaster on a corner. Like Sanchez, he could turn into a decent fifth outfielder.
2000 While millions of kids on the planet spent the ’80s and ’90s wanting to be like Mike, Tyner decided to be like Brett--Butler, that is. A speedy center fielder, Tyner hits line singles, bloop singles, bunt singles, Kraft singles and singles bars, but only gets an extra-base hit when an outfielder has to go to his left or right. He never, ever hits the ball over an outfielder’s head.

2011-05-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)RJ- I traded Baker for Gallardo and Fuld and Nalasco for Kershaw? Thoughts? Also, I'm thinking of trading Wright away but am worried I can't enough in return. Dan
(DanDaMan from SeaCliff)
I think you robbed two people, even if Fuld never returns to his early season form and simply becomes a Jason Tyner clone. (R.J. Anderson)
2011-01-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why is OPS a three-digit whole number, but OBP and SLG are decimals? Also, what are the chances that Lastings Milledge will ever get his own bobblehead? I'm so depressed; I was hoping that this season, the Pirates would keep him and he'd rise to the occasion and would warrant a b-head. The ability to make people say, "I'd like a Lastings Milledge Bobblehead, please" is probably his most lasting skill!
(Patty Boyd from Pittsburgh)
My feelings on the topic aren't as strong as BP editorial policy, which says that since it's mathematically incorrect to add OBP and SLG together because they're different denominators, it's a number that should be set off in a different style. Still, I think you're better off using True Average than OPS or even OPS+ because both of those undervalue OBP, which is nearly 2x as important as SLG.

Sorry about Lastings. Dude just hasn't hit like a major league corner outfielder. If he had a time machine, maybe the Devil Rays would make him a bobblehead just like they did Jason Tyner. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-06-04 16:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Tyler Ladendorf's power surge this year was for real? Where do you see him going in the draft?
(Chris from Harrisonburg, VA)
It's real in the sense that nobody compares him to Jason Tyner anymore, but it's not like he's suddenly a middle-of-the-order hitter or anything. He could go 2nd-3rd round. (Kevin Goldstein)

2009-06-10 08:45:002009 Draft Coverage, Day TwoBryan, what's your opinion on Ole Miss OF Jordan Henry? I was told by a club type that he's a target for a few teams early on day 2. Also heard a Jason Tyner comp, so I wasn't sure what I was missing here. (Kiley McDaniel)
