2007 Jason Standridge did well enough in some garbage time in the Reds pen for the Mets to pick the former D-Ray first-rounder off waivers in November.
2006 A 1997 1st rounder for Tampa Bay, Standridge spent eight years harnessing his control while losing his fastball along the way. The Reds signed him in July after he had refused an outright assignment by Texas, and converted him to relief, where he continued to be pounded. A favorite of GM Dan O`Brien, he fits the profile: a former prep standout who`s toiled for a long time in the minors without great success. He has no future in the majors.
2005 Standridge had shoulder surgery in August 2003, and wasn't quite recovered by the time the season started, hence the time in Montgomery and Durham. He was recalled in late May, but after consecutive shellings he was sent back to Durham for the duration. That's a shame, since he was actually showing a semblance of control and had his best season since he was in the low minors. Released, he signed a minor league deal with Texas.
2003 Standridge took a step forward with Durham, improving his previously mediocre strikeout to walk ratio and keeping runners off base. Standridge has had problems challenging batters in the past, and with his fastball-curve combo he can still improve in that area. He’s probably not ready for prime time, but he may be handed a starting job in 2003.
2002 Standridge made good progress during 2000 but seemed to give it all back last year. He pitched poorly at Triple-A, got called up anyway, and stunk even worse with the big club. His numbers always have been something of a mystery, because he’s said to have good stuff—a low-90s fastball and hard curve—but he posts distinctly unimpressive strikeout-to-walk ratios. He might get a chance to open the season on the major-league roster, but don't expect much.
2001 If you've made it this far into the Devil Rays' chapter, here's your reward: a conventional, pedigreed, live-armed pitching prospect. Jason Standridge, the D-Rays' #1 pick in the 1997 draft, gets into the mid 90s with his fastball and mixes in a nice curve. Command is a problem, so don't look for him to make a contribution in the majors for another year or so. Standridge was recruited to play quarterback by Auburn. I'm not so sure I wouldn't take the Devil Rays over the Arizona Cardinals.
2000 The Devil Rays' top pick in the 1997 draft dominated at Charleston, allowing fewer baserunners than innings pitched, and was named the #2 prospect in the Sally League by Baseball America. He didn't fare as well after his promotion to St. Petersburg, primarily because he hasn't developed a true strikeout pitch. That should come with experience, as Standridge offers a full buffet: 94-mph fastball, big overhand curve and improving change-up. In addition to the requisite caveats that come with any A-ball hurler, the organization needs to more closely watch his workload, which was too high for a 20-year-old.
