2003 The Devil Rays’ first homegrown player to make the majors became Theo Epstein’s first waiver claim as the Red Sox GM. Rupe’s got electric stuff, but he battled knee problems throughout 2002, and that kind of injury has broken pitchers much better than Rupe. The Sox are considering Rupe as a reliever or even closer, something Tampa Bay might have tried themselves if they weren’t still waiting on Jesus Colome.
2002 Conspiracy theorists who speculate that there were multiple Lee Harvey Oswalds must have a field day with Rupe. He gave up two earned runs or less in 11 of his 26 starts, but he gave up five earned runs or more nine times—including outings of seven, eight, nine, and ten earned runs allowed, a true “straight from hell.” That doesn’t even include his two relief appearances: he gave up six runs each time, working a total of one and two-thirds innings. It seems like only yesterday he was a promising young pitcher; now he’s 27 years old. Those six-run outings will age you quickly.
2001 He was a bit more wild and homer-prone last year, but the big difference between Ryan Rupe's rookie and sophomore seasons was in the number of hits he allowed. That may not be such a big deal; statheads are doing studies that question the extent to which hit allowed are a function of a pitcher's performance vs. defense and luck. Ryan Rupe pitched better following a brief trip to Durham. We liked him a year ago, we like him now.
2000 The early leader for steal of the 1998 draft. A sixth-round pick, Jeff Weaver nosed him out by three weeks to be the first starting pitcher from that draft to make the majors. But while Weaver took his licks the second time through the league, Rupe was Tampa Bay's most consistent starter, logging a team-high 14 quality starts. Rothschild handled him sensibly and shut him down in late September when Rupe complained of a tired shoulder. Rupe is the future ace of the Devil Ray staff, if he hasn't claimed that title already.
1999 There was a time, after his sophomore year in college, when the 6'5", 230-pound Rupe was seen as a first round pick. Then there was the elbow surgery that wiped out his junior year. Then there was a blood clot under his collarbone that cost him a rib and his senior season. He pitched well in a redshirt senior year last spring, but a lot of teams were reluctant to take a chance on him. Watch out for guys who have something to prove.
