2017-07-06 12:00:00 (link to chat)Newcomb showed the same pros and cons he always has in the minors this year but got promoted before this came out. In the discussion if he hadn't been called up? He's looked pretty filthy in (most of) his starts in Atlanta.
(Wells from Queens)
I love me some Sean Newcomb, he'd have been in the mix. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)You buying on either Carlos Gomez (Tex) or Sean Newcomb in a deep roto league ROS?
(lipitorkid from Costa Mesa, CA)
In a deep league, I will ALWAYS take a chance on a player like Carlos Gomez--there just aren't that many players who can give you HRs and SBs. Newcomb's walks scare me. Guys like that kill your WHIP. Yeah, I know, he's been OK so far, but that's because of a .229 BABIP that he won't keep. (Rob Mains)
2016-11-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)What chance do you give Sean Newcomb of reaching the ceiling the Braves saw when they traded for him?
(Seth from Raleigh, NC)
I assume the Braves saw the same stuff I saw when he was at University of Hartford. Easy left velocity, feel for the secondaries, ideal frame. He just hasn't thrown enough strikes, and at a certain point the whole "cold weather guy just in need of pro instruction" becomes "Command profile projects best in relief." He just has never sorted his delivery out. Lefties put it together late as they say, and I will probably be one of the last people to give up on him as a power lefty workhorse starter. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2016-10-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Tyler Glasnow's stock down right now? Mainly referring to continued problems issuing free passes and the late season shoulder discomfort.
(John from PA)
I think so. At a certain point your command/control is what it is. I think Glasnow will be better than what he has shown, but he might always be frustrating. Of course, I am also the last believer in Sean Newcomb, so... (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2016-09-12 23:00:00 (link to chat)What are some of the prospects you're most looking forward to seeing next year?
(Justin from NY)
Well, unfortunately the Astros and Rangers are gettin' stole by those dirty, dastardly Carolinians, but the Cal should still have some interesting talent piping in, highlighted by what should be just a stupid Lake Elsinore rotation with Espinoza, Quantrill, and Lauer. I hope Anfernee Greier crushes his full-season debut and gets bumped aggressively, because he's a dude I'm real curious to see in the flesh. Though he might get traded for a a 34-year-old back-up catcher this winter, so who knows. Skye Bolt's a kid I liked on the Cape, but who hasn't exactly hit the ground running, be interested to see what he looks like nowadays. Matt Thaiss might be the first legitimately interesting prospect to come through Inland Empire since Sean Newcomb's brief stint in the first half of last year. (Wilson Karaman)
2016-06-16 21:00:00 (link to chat)Sean Newcomb has a lot of walks this year... Does he ever reach SP1 or is at best a SP2/3
(Tim from Okc)
He may not even get to SP2/3 level if those walks don't come down. SP1 is out of the question for me barring an unforeseen improvement. (Bret Sayre)
2016-05-16 23:00:00 (link to chat)How much do you like Sean Newcomb? SP2?
(Rich from Elliott City)
I liked Newcomb a lot when I saw him a couple times at the dawn of his High-A career last year. Cold weather lefty with some stiffness and size to the frame, so figured it may take him a while to tone down what I thought were fixable aspects of his delivery that were feeding the command issues. That doesn't sound like it's really happened yet though. Projection sounds a bit high given some stagnant progress at this point, but stuff- and body-wise he checks an awful lot of boxes. (Wilson Karaman)
2016-04-12 18:00:00 (link to chat)Are you a Sean Newcomb believer? Can he get the walks under control?
(Eddie from Carolina)
I am a Sean Newcomb believer, so yeah, I believe he can at least keep the walks to a dull roar. If he's going to be a TOR guy, he's going to have to improve the fastball command substantially, but the stuff is good enough to "overcome" the fringe-average command. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-03-14 14:30:00 (link to chat)Dillion Tate, Jeff Hoffman, Sean Newcomb, Jake Thompson. Who's an SP1 in 3-4 years?
(Negan from Washington DC)
Probably none of them. Thompson the safest choice. (Brendan Gawlowski)
2016-01-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)How badly is LAA going to miss giving up Sean Newcomb? If he can iron out some control issues, what does the ceiling look like? I've seen a Jon Lester comp in several places.
(Dave from San Diego)
Ah the "if game." *IF* he irons out his control issues, he's a frontline starter. The reality is that there's work to be done in that category, and few can go from 4.9 walks per nine to under 2, like Clayton Kershaw did. How much they'll miss him will of course depend on what Simmons, and more realistically, the Angels do in the next few years. (Top 101 Chat with Craig Goldstein)
2016-01-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)His Robert Stephenson the right handed version of Sean Newcomb? Great stuff, terrible command? Do you expect either to debut in MLB in 2016 or is the command/control so bad that we're looking at 2017 at the earliest?
(Kip from Dayton)
Control is obviously a sticking point for both, but both are work-in-progress overall. I'd certainly expect to see Stephenson debut in 2016. 2017 might make more sense for Newcomb, depending on his progress. (Top 101 Chat with Craig Goldstein)
2015-09-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Sean Newcomb led the minors in strikeouts this year. If he can sharpen his control - he still hasn't pitched for very long and comes from a cold weather state - are we looking at a future topline ace in the making?
(hausman from chicago)
I never saw an Ace. I just don't think he'll ever repeat terribly well and his command won't be great, but he's going to have a long, successful career as a big league starter with flashes where he looks frontline. (Al Skorupa)
2015-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)With the mess of a rotation LAA has do you think they go after one of the premier free agents or stay in house with Skaggs, Tropeano, etc. Also, what do you think of Chris Ellis ?
(Barry from San Diego)
Boy for having one of the best young players of all time that whole team is kinda a mess. I think they probably spend the $ because that's what Moreno does. Ellis is interesting, maybe their second best prospect behind Sean Newcomb with two above-average pitches. Being the second best prospect in that system isn't saying a whole lot, but Ellis could be a solid back-end guy. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-07-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Sean Newcomb so far? Lots of K's already.
(George from Costanza)
I like him. He's a big dude with mechanical inconsistencies and less polish than you'd typically see from a college pitcher (cold weather guy), so the burn's gonna be longer and slower. But he's got the kind of body and athleticism that I can see developing average command eventually, and if that happens he's got the arsenal to develop into a very, very good pitcher. Wrote him up at length after his Cal League debut: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2015/5/19/8620681/scouting-the-california-league-sean-newcombs-debut-other-notes (Wilson Karaman)

(Jquinton82 from NY)
I'm not sure there's a prospect who's had a better year than Blake Snell. Newcomb's command has been worse than anticipated, so it's hard to say he's helped his stock at all. Holmes has met expectations; his stuff is too good for the Midwest League. (Brendan Gawlowski)
2015-04-29 20:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks Bret. Could you rank these prospect starters? Brent Honeywell, Sean Newcomb and Rob Kaminsky
(Keith from Manchester, CT)
I'd go Honeywell, Kaminsky, Newcomb. (Bret Sayre)
2015-02-12 19:00:00 (link to chat)How do you feel about the Angels' farm system? Will Sean Newcomb be a savior for us Angels fans?
(Dennis from LA)
The Angels' farm system is a wee bit of a mess right now, to be honest. One pitching prospect does not a savior make, but he's certainly very interesting. (Kate Morrison)
