DateQuestionAnswer
2008-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Steve, there are several reasons Kenny Williams may have traded Nick Swisher that have nothing to do with money/talent. As it's been reported on the Chicago stations, Swisher shut out the coaching staff completely last year, blew off the hitting coach when he tried to help him, and simply withdrew into himself once he was put in a platoon. Additionally, Swisher's locker room clown act was beginning to wear thin (his partner in crime, Toby Hall, has also been shown the door). Just something to keep in mind before blasting Kenny Williams...
(Josh from Chicago)
I wasn't necessarily blasting him, but the trade was uneven, even if his reasons are of the off-field variety. Whatever the issues with Swisher's personality and comportment, he's a guy with value, a four-position guy who has produced in the past and even in a miserable year took a whole bunch of walks and hit with power. Players are traded for all kinds of reasons, even the one you site--that they're too annoying to live with. That still doesn't mean that the team shouldn't get value for them. At first glance it doesn't appear Williams did that. (Steven Goldman)
2008-08-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)The FA list form mlbtraderumors: Catchers Rod Barajas (33) - $2.5MM club option for '09 with a $0.5MM buyout Michael Barrett (32) Henry Blanco (37) - $3MM mutual option for '09 with a $0.3MM buyout Johnny Estrada (33) Toby Hall (33) - $2.25MM club option for '09 with a $0.15MM buyout Jason LaRue (35) Paul Lo Duca (37) Miguel Olivo (30) - $2.7MM club option for '09 with a $0.1MM buyout Mike Redmond (38) - $0.95MM club option for '09 with a $0.1MM buyout Ivan Rodriguez (37) David Ross (32) Jason Varitek (37) Gregg Zaun (38)
(Josh from MA)
That's um...ugly. And depressing, if you're a Sox fan, or a fan of anyone else without a quality catcher. (Marc Normandin)
2008-03-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)I'm all for the information age, although it was a bit wearisome during the Johan sweepstakes and so many non-stories at the trade deadline. That being said, I think we've hit a new low today when this is being reported by Rotoworld: 'Toby Hall has been called into manager Ozzie Guillen's office for two meetings on Tuesday, though he's rejoined his teammates after each.' Really? Twice?
(ChuckR from Addison, IL)
I hear you, Chuck, that's almost as tedious to read as it probably was to write. One of the things about the 24-hour news cycle is that it's like a bag of Fritos--it's there, it consumes space, and you can probably nibble on them constantly and not die, but there's no value, and the damned things don't even taste good to start off with. (Christina Kahrl)
