BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2017-08-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who are your personal top 5 favorite prospects to follow as a fan?
(Kim from NYC)
Oh gosh, I'm not enough of a prospect guy for this. Willie Calhoun. Logan Shore. Franklin Barreto. Brent Honeywell. Nick Senzel. (Matthew Trueblood)
2017-08-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you name some of the big names you expect to be called up when rosters expand? Anybody you're looking forward to seeing?
(Paddy from Ireland )
As a Phillies fan, I'm kind of excited to see what JP Crawford can do, if anything at all. Brent Honeywell, for the Rays, is going to be interesting too (if they decide to pull the trigger, and that's no sure thing in Tampa Bay). A lot of my favorite guys -- Moncada, Giolito, Rhys Hoskins, et al -- have already been called up before rosters expand, so this is a tough one for me.

I hope some team does a hyper-aggressive promotion, like Nick Gordon or Brendan Rodgers or something. (Trevor Strunk)
2017-07-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)AL East, what minor league pitchers will get the call in the second half? Chance Adams, Brent Honeywell? How do you think they do?
(Stan from Baltimore)
Those are good bets, I'd think we'd see Adams sooner rather than later, although I'm not sure if they have him on an innings limit. I think he will hold his own. Honeywell is super fun and his K:BB is great, but he's still getting hit around a bit in AAA. I'd guess he appears as a reliever in September and excels in that role and auditions for a rotation spot next spring.

Limiting it to the AL East...Justus Sheffield could also survive at the back of the rotation maybe? (Nick Schaefer)
2017-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Amy MiLB pitchers you've circled to help in the coming months? Pitching arms have blown up, on my team at least, and I need more upside than the MLB waiver wire flotsam.
(Sir Nerdlington from Colorado)
Brent Honeywell is the obvious name. He struggled in his last start in Durham, but I think he's going to get a taste of major-league competition this summer. Nobody has more confidence than him. I'm going to throw out a weird name. Nik Turley. He was just promoted to Triple-A. The Twins bullpen is a mess & he's been transitioned to a left-handed Devenski-type multi-inning role in relief. I think he's a weird, but potentially useful guy in a crazy deep league. (George Bissell)
2017-03-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have not read anything about Brent Honeywell this spring. Is there anything new I should know before I decide whether to take him in my dynasty league draft?
(Nailfan from Kailua Kona)
Roster Resource doesn't list him as injured, which is the only new information I would be worried about. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-02-14 12:00:00 (link to chat)To put a guy like Gsellman at 17 overall has to mean he has Ace upside right? Or is a guy with the high floor of a #3 starter ranked in that range too? Basically, do you have to have Ace potential to be a top 15/20 prospect
(Dave from Queens)
A few different ideas to unpack here.

I haven't done my most recent check, but I'm guessing there's maybe 10-12 "aces" in the majors right now. So in any given year, they might not be an "ace" in the minors. Alex Reyes is the closest to that now, hence his ranking, but I couldn't quite pull the trigger on an 80 OFP there because of the control and command concerns. A sure shot #3 could definitely rank there though, and if you want to talk about *ceiling*--which isn't a word I love to discuss--is it impossible Gsellman gets another grade of change and command and turns into Jacob deGrom? No, it isn't, but that wasn't the line of thinking that led us to rank him there. And you could say the same things about Josh Hader, Anderson Espinoza, Brent Honeywell, plenty of pitchers in that same area of the list.

There aren't that many more #2 starters either, so guys with that potential should be top 25 guys. (The Top 101 Prospect Chat with Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which prospects this year have an 80 grade tool?
(CKnecht88 from Ohio)
This is my favorite question so far. Look, I'm not a scout. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the men and women who can do it. I think as far as 80-grade goes, that's reserved for top of the scale #OffTheCharts tools like Billy Hamilton's speed, Joey Gallo's power, Miguel Cabrera's hit tool (and maybe Mookie Betts someday)...I think of the current crop of prospects, Alex Reyes & Michael Kopech have 80-grade fastballs. There are a few relievers with the velocity to put an 80 on their fastballs too. If you're looking for a fun one, I think Jharel Cotton's changeup is a potential one to get there. I have no idea how you grade a screwball but Brent Honeywell for me there. (George Bissell)
2016-12-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who's one prospect you've learned in your time at BP you're much higher on than the rest of your colleagues? Why?
(Lorenzo from Florida)
Well it's not Brent Honeywell, that's for sure.

Gsellman is the obvious one, but I'll throw in Robert Stephenson as well. I still believe in the stuff. This may go badly for me. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2016-12-05 20:00:00 (link to chat)Who are some of your favorite prospect targets in a dynasty/keeper format?
(Bob from Chanute, Kansas)
Brent Honeywell and Robert Gsellman (George Bissell)
2016-12-05 20:00:00 (link to chat)Anything you can do for my fantasy baseball itch right now? Still too far away!!!!!!! who are your top 5 must stash prospects for keeper leagues? Thanks for your time tonight!
(James from OKC)
I'll give you five names off the top of my head that aren't like consensus at the top of any prospect lists: Eloy Jimenez, Brent Honeywell, Josh Hader, Mitch Keller, Isan Diaz (George Bissell)
2016-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Could you rank the following: Chase Adams, Michael Kopech, Justus Sheffield, and Brent Honeywell.
(Bob from Fayetteville)
Not only can I, I will! Honeywell, Kopech, Sheffield, Adams. Another good group. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-06-16 21:00:00 (link to chat)How do you feel about Brent Honeywell? Really like what I see
(Jim from Nj)
Don't see big fantasy upside, but think he pitches in the middle of a rotation for as long as that screwball allows him to keep his arm attached. (Bret Sayre)
2016-05-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is there a farm system that has as much depth and upside for pitchers than the Pirates? With Glasnow, Taillon, Kingham, Keller, Kuhl, Brault, Eppler, all are dominating or have legitimate shots to be main stays in a rotation.
(detlef schrempf from Zimbabwe)
So many Pirates questions!
The one org that you could consider is Tampa Bay. Blake Snell, Brent Honeywell, Taylor Guerrieri, Jacob Faria and co. are nothing to sneeze at. Love Pittsburgh's young arms though, they're pretty damn good. (Nicolas Stellini)
2016-05-18 19:00:00 (link to chat)Are there any prospects you are keeping an eye on this season who you weren't getting any buzz but are looking to buy there stock before it blows up? Any personal favorite hitters & pitchers?
(Nick from My Apartment)
It's hard to find anyone who isn't generating any buzz, but if you're looking for a pitching prospect that will move quickly and could be up around this time next year if he continues to progress, it's Rays right-hander Brent Honeywell. We throw the word "unique" around a lot, but there's simply no other way to describe the guy. His best pitch is a screwball (and it's nasty). He throws a mid-90's heater, excellent command and he strikes out over a batter per inning. He's going to be up at Double-A shortly and I'm 1,000 percent in on him. I'm also in on Victor Robles. He's a beast. If you're looking for a sort of under the radar prospect I like that doesn't generate huge buzz, I'll go Joe Musgrave and Cody Reed. (George Bissell)
2016-01-21 19:00:00 (link to chat)Can you give us a couple prospects that you could see their stock blowing up this year? Robles and Espinoza aside
(Isaac from Akron)
Victor Robles blew up last year and he's my dude...Assuming you're looking for lower-level prospects with upside, not MLB-ready types, my favorites would have to be Francis Martes (Astros) and Brent Honeywell (Rays). Honeywell throws the screwball and so far nobody has been able to touch it. I also like Austin Riley (Braves). He's going to shoot up lists. If you're looking for the one big name prospect that I'm high on it's Nomar Mazara...I'm all in... (George Bissell)
2015-09-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Am I right to think Brent Honeywell has a potentially really good secondary pitch (screwball), an average third secondary, and an average fastball? What does that add up to ... Back end starter with mid rotation potential?
(Mikey from FL)
Hoeywell is sort in the same camp as Mella but for different reasons. With that screwball being an effective weapon against lefties, the onus is on Honeywell's development of the breaking ball to approach ceiling. He currently has a curveball with 11-to-5 shape that complements the screwball, but the pitch is inconsistent at present. (Doug Thorburn)
2015-06-30 19:00:00 (link to chat)Which arm do you like better in the Rays system currently, Blake Snell or Brent Honeywell? Who has the higher ceiling?
(Ned from Flanders)
I think Honeywell has moved ahead of Snell in the Rays system (slightly) and has a higher ceiling by a little bit. (Mike Gianella)
2015-06-15 19:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you like better from the 2014 draft class, Brent Honeywell or Michael Kopech?
(Alex from Baton Rouge)
Honeywell. I like both, but prefer the guy who throws more strikes. (Brendan Gawlowski)
2015-06-02 18:00:00 (link to chat)My two favorite and kind of obscure prospect pitchers are Duane Underwood and Brent Honeywell...Underwood didn't even make the BP top-10 Cubs article. What are your thoughts on both of them and their ceilings/ETA's?
(Tim from Ohio)
I'll see Honeywell this Friday so look for a full writeup on him soon. Underwood has a lot of things that I like, fastball/curveball combo that can be plus, quick arm action and a change he's developing the feel for. I think Underwood has the highest ceiling of any Cubs MiLB arm and it wouldn't surprise me to see him high in the top ten next year, if he's still in the org. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-05-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who has the highest upside: Brent Honeywell or Reynaldo Lopez? What are each of their upsides?
(Mark from SD)
Reynaldo Lopez. Looking at a potential #2 SP if everything clicks.

We will have some Reynaldo content on the site soon, I promise. Here is some video to hold you over until: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3R_NBln7wA

Honeywell has been a great story as well. Deep arsenal with potential for three plus pitches, and a mid-rotation starter. Rays are excited about him, I know that for certain. (Tucker Blair)
2015-04-29 20:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks Bret. Could you rank these prospect starters? Brent Honeywell, Sean Newcomb and Rob Kaminsky
(Keith from Manchester, CT)
I'd go Honeywell, Kaminsky, Newcomb. (Bret Sayre)
