DateQuestionAnswer
2015-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)I know you had noted Eddy Julio Martinez as the top international prospect a few months back - could you help me understand where he might stop up to say, recent Cubs pick Ian Happ or Billy McKinney?
(Chris from IL)
Potentially, he's better. The Andruw Jones comps aren't fair, but they aren't there for no reason. I think he could be a star. I don't think either of those two are stars, but if you asked me who was more likely to become a big leaguer, I'd go with both of those guys, and that's why they're better prospects -- for now. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-10-22 14:00:00 (link to chat)Seriously though, what is the plan for Schwarber now?
(JD from North of Victory)
Schwarber is another interesting element of the Cubsí interesting winter ahead. Heís a better defensive left fielder than he appeared to be over the last week. He could stick just fine out there. Obviously, he has more defensive value at catcher, and that would help alleviate the jam the Cubs have out thereónot only Jorge Soler and Chris Coghlan, but Billy McKinney could be knocking on the door by midsummer, and depending how the infield shakes out, Kris Bryant might become an outfield refugee. On the other hand, I canít really see Schwarber being more than an average defensive catcher, especially with regard to framing. (He was exactly average in that regard this season.) The Cubs went out of their way to add Miguel Montero and David Ross last winter, in no small part because those guys are exceptional framers. Both guys are under contract for next season and using Schwarber as a catcher crowds that picture, too. They also have Willson Contreras, who broke out as a prospect in 2015, and might well think heís the catcher of the (long-term) future. I think Schwarber breaks camp as the starting left fielder, but thatís nowhere near certain yet. (Matthew Trueblood)
2015-09-30 19:00:00 (link to chat)Better career: Billy McKinney or Albert Almora?
(JB from Iowa)
Albert Almora but by a margin that is much thinner than most imagined a year ago. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat)Rank these Theo Epstein trade fleecings: 1. Rangers - 2 trades (recevied Hendricks, Villanueva, Edwards, Grimm, Ramirez, and Olt for Dempster and Garza rentals (resulted in 0 WS)). 2. Orioles (received Jake Arrieta, Pedro Strop, and international bonus money for Scott Feldman and Steve Clevenger. 3. A's (received Addison Russell (!), Billy McKinney, and Dan Straily for Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel (who promptly returned to Cubs in FA)). Also, are you still a little in shock that Billy Beane traded Addison Russell?
(Mark from Bleacher Nation)
That's a fun question.

The Arrieta trade, the Russell trade, and the Rangers trade. I was not in shock about it (nothing Beane does is on the shock level) but I was very surprised. (Mike Gianella)
2015-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)What can you tell me about Billy Mckinney? Does he have a chance to be a big league regular? What's his upside? I don't see a stand out tool, but the guy keeps on hitting. Any chance he develops more power with age? Was he in the conversation for the top 50 or not? Thanks Chris!
(Nick from LA)
Oh yes, he definitely has a chance to be a big league regular. I think the hit tool is a standout tool by the way, coming out of high school I thought it had a chance to be plus-plus, and I still think it can be plus, and I think there's a little more power coming. I think you see him in the Cubs outfield in 2016, assuming he's not used as a very nice trade chip before that point. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-07-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Was Billy McKinney close to making the top 50?
(JasonPennini from Denver)
No not particularly, though I really like him. (Jeff Moore)
2015-06-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)Rank on offensive production the following emerging OF prospects: Bradley Zimmer, Billy McKinney, Austin Meadows, and Clint Coulter? Thanks...
(Prospector from Empty Mine)
Zimmer is #1 for me. I adore him. I'd probably go Zimmer, Meadows, McKinney, and Coulter. I'm still not sold on Coulter's ability to handle quality right-handers, which potentially limits him to a platoon-ish role as a corner outfielder. Still plenty of time for him to adjust and grow, though, obviously. (J.P. Breen)
2015-05-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Billy Mckinney has to be a breakout candidate so far, no? Destroyed A+ to start the year and is more than holding his own against AA in his first 10 games or so at that level. Problem is, I think he's solid all around, but does not have an elite tool. Can he be a first division regular? Is a 15/10 season with maybe a .270-.280 AVG possible for him in the future?
(Jeff from Chicago)
It's been a good season, for sure. And I think you nailed the description. I don't see a first division player, but he's a major leaguer. He lacks the athleticism/speed to play CF, but the hit tool will play in the majors. Can he be a Ryan Sweeney type of player (maybe with a little more power)? I see it. (Tucker Blair)
2015-01-05 15:00:00 (link to chat)I know you are possibly the highest on him out of the BP Staff, but are people sleeping on Billy McKinney? The defense isn't anything to write home about, but how do you see his bat/approach playing in the high minors and ultimately the Show?
(Aaron from New Orleans)
The defense isnít terrible. Heís doesnít have the straight-line speed to handle CF for very long in the majors, but he was still playing it while he was with Oakland until he was bumped to RF with the Cubs in favor of Albert Almora. Heís got more of a LF arm, but his range there should be above-average.

Iím definitely higher on McKinney than most and some scouts (including some of our own guys) question whether or not he has the bat speed to catch up to inside fastballs, but I donít have those concerns. I really like the swing and pure hit tool and while he probably wonít hit for a ton of power, 15 home runs, strong on-base skills and above-average defense make for a pretty good LF. (Jeff Moore)
2014-11-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)How many of your NL Central Top 25 do you expect to make it on the top 100 list when BP publishes it? Average would be around 16 or 17 assuming talent is evenly distributed, right?
(Mike from Texas)
I did say I'd throw a top 25 NL Central Prospects list out there during this chat. With the understanding this is a work in progress (Mellen and I are starting to dig in on the framework for the Top 101), this is my own personal ranking of the prospects covered in our NL Central rankings:

1. SS Addison Russell
2. 3B Kris Bryant
3. RHP Robert Stephenson
4. OF Jorge Soler
5. OF Albert Almora
6. OF Stephen Piscotty
7. LHP Marco Gonzales
8. RHP Tyler Glasnow
9. RHP Jameson Taillon
10. OF Jesse Winker
11. OF/1B Josh Bell
12. RHP Alex Reyes
13. C Kyle Schwarber
14. RHP Michael Lorenzen
15. SS Orlando Arcia
16. OF Tyrone Taylor
17. OF Billy McKinney
18. RHP Pierce Johnson
19. SS Gleyber Torres
20. RHP Jack Flaherty
21. OF Yorman Rodriguez
22. C Reese McGuire
23. RHP Nick Howard
24. RHP Devin Williams
25. LHP Rob Kaminsky

I think all of those guys will be in the discussion for the 101, and expect there to be some shuffling in order of course. Definitely more than the average of 16 or 17. (NL Central Top 10s With Nick Faleris)
2014-10-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Miami said he isn't being moved, but what is a realistic package from the Cubs for Stanton?
(maxpowers from chicago)
Considering they got Addison Russell and Billy McKinney for Shark and Hammel, I'd say the price for Stanton would be just about everyone in their farm system, Wrigley Field, and the cast of The League. If I'm the Marlins I don't even consider it without Bryant, which the Cubs won't do, so there ends your talks right there. (Jeff Moore)
2014-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is your favorite prospect that you don't think has any chance at making the majors?
(Brett from Charlotte)
Billy McKinney. I came away very impressed in a three-game look and will push hard for his spot in the Cubs top-10 this off-season. His addition in that trade will be a major coup when it's all said and done. (Jeff Moore)
2014-07-24 19:00:00 (link to chat)It has been reported they are not negotiating during the season, the Red Sox decide to trade Jon Lester, what kind of return could they get? Considering the Shark return and Price might not be traded. Will Lester be the latest piece that heads to the Cubs in Theo's master plan to acquire all former Red Sox players?
(Matt from Cambridge)
It wouldn't be an Addison Russell Billy McKinney return for just Lester but it'd be a pretty nice return. I don't think the Cubs would make a trade for Lester and give up one of their bats at the deadline. I think they might rather gamble and see if they can bring him in via free agency. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-24 19:00:00 (link to chat)Is Billy McKinney in the conversation for top 100? Only 19 and holding his own at high A
(Pete from Chicago)
If he is it's in the backend. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)With the recent acquisition of the Addison Russel, Billy McKinney and Dan Straily do the Cubs now have the best farm in the league?
(Balki from Chicago)
Pretty good case; nobody can touch their impact bats; depth is obviously improving but it had a long way to go. I think Cubs and Twins are the two alphas of the minor league systems. (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Please rank the following OF prospects from last years draft: Hunter Renfroe, Billy McKinney, Phil Ervin, and Austin Wilson

Hit tool heavy left-fielder with a chance for some (not plus) power. Could end up a tweener type. (Jason Parks)
2013-11-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Other than the top talents from the most recent draft class, who has jumped up prospect boards after their first season of pro ball? Phil Ervin? Ryan McMahon? Billy McKinney?
(Fred from Detroit)
Those are nice choices, but don't forget guys like Hunter Harvey, Shipley, Kaminsky. (Jason Parks)
