2016 Dozier was unable to solve the mysteries of the Texas League last summer, as the former top pick spent a full season failing to assemble consistent at-bats or make consistent hard contact against more advanced pitchers. It was an especially troubling season for a college product like Dozier, who is short on tools and projection but should show more polish, especially in his approach at the plate. He did start launching a few bombs and has plus power potential for a third baseman, but his defense at the hot corner is still a work in progress. This already feels like a make-or-break season for Dozier's career, and if he keeps posting middle-infield batting lines with a corner-man's glove he'll soon become organizational fodder.
2015 Dozier showed off his advanced approach and line-drive stroke in his full-season debut, posting a high on-base percentage and moderate, gap-to-gap power in Wilmington before hitting the wall in Double-A. A converted shortstop, Dozier has a plus arm and is still a work in progress at third base, though most scouts feel he will eventually be average there. He's a gamer with a simple swing that serves him well, and he uses the whole field, draws walks and flashes plus bat speed that hints at untapped wells of future home run power. Look for Dozier to solve more advanced pitching this summer, and if he starts launching a few more over the fence, watch out.
2014 The Royals shocked the draft gurus when they selected Dozier as the eighth overall pick in 2013. Seen as a reach, it was part of a larger draft strategy that allowed the Royals to move around the cash in their bonus pool. One of the top college bats in the draft, Dozier lived up to expectations in his first pro taste. Possessing a solid understanding of the strike zone, his hit tool projects as slightly above average with some power potential. He's solid defender at short but his long-term home looks to be third. He cruised through the Pioneer League and will likely open 2014 in High-A.

DateQuestionAnswer
2016-06-16 21:00:00 (link to chat)Has Hunter Dozier reestablished himself as a future above average regular (on offense) at 3b? The K's are up at AAA but everything else is looking good to box score scouts. Thanks for the chat!
(Massy from EST)
I wouldn't go that far. But back on track to be a major leaguer capable of holding a job? Sure. (Bret Sayre)
2015-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's going on with Hunter Dozier? Looks like a year and a half of AA struggles. I thought he had some concern handling upper velocity but didn't expect things to be this drastic. How do you feel he's positioned going forward?
(Daniel from Texas)
I don't wanna say he's been exposed, but the reports I've gotten back are not good. A ton of swing-and-miss, and if your'e a third baseman who doesn't have plus power, you better be really good with the glove or have an average or better hit tool. Dozier looked to have the latter, but the length of the swing and lack of patience appears to have caught up with him a bit. Still time, but no longer a starter at the hot corner for me. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-04-22 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hunter Dozier seems to be a fairly divisive prospect-- where do you stand, and has their been any chatter about him since the AFL?
(JT Smooth from Loveboat Cap'n)
Dozier was really impressive when I saw him in Wilmington and I won't forget that. I have him in as a role 6 3B. He will make adjustments at every level. (CJ Wittmann)
2015-02-04 19:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Hunter Dozier? Are the holes in his zone coverage "fixable" or is he destined to be a low-average hitter?
(Andy5 from MKE)
He's an extremely strong kid, who is a tad bit stiff, just because he's so muscular. But, he has huge levels of #want, and will stick at 3B. The bat may never be plus, but it has the potential to be average, and the power could play to a 6. It's an intriguing package overall. (Jordan Gorosh)
2015-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hunter Dozier. Impact bat?
(Marcus Wright from Delaware)
Potential impact bat that could settle as a solid average bat for his position. (NL West Top 10s With Nick Faleris)
2014-11-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Hunter Dozier? Can he supplant Moustakas at 3b by 2016?
(jojo from Sd)
I liked Dozier when viewing him with Wilmington. Shows barrel control and has a good approach, showing ability to adapt in-game and not succumb to quality sequencing. I think more power is coming, but it's not quite there yet. Plus raw power, but the swing is more conducive for high-contact at the time. Once he starts to learn how to get some backspin and loft on the swing, I think we see more production in the power department. I think by 2016, you could reasonably see Dozier in the discussion. I don't think it's this season though. (Tucker Blair)
2014-10-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)Mike Moustakas has been a great defender this year, but other than a decent home run total, has looked completely lost at the plate. What are your thoughts on his future, and who will be the Royals' third baseman in 2016?
(Frank from Kansas City)
We touched on this earlier, but I would think he'd be their third baseman again in 2016. Hunter Dozier made some noise in Wilmington at the start of the year, but stalled in Double A. (Andy McCullough)
2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hunter Dozier struggling in AA after strong results earlier. Just a bump in the road for him/adjusting? An everyday 3B for you?
(Steven from Oh me oh oh my oh oh Cleveland Ohio)
It was an aggressive move to put him there, so an adjustment period shouldn't be surprising. I still believe. 2nd division regular for me, with the possibility of a few role 55 years in there. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-07-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Rank these pitchers: Jose Berrios, Daniel Norris, Marco Gonzales Rank these hitters for their bats: Hunter Dozier, Michael Taylor, Rio Ruiz, Jesse Winker Thanks!
(FantasyFrodo from Washington)
Norris, Berrios, Gonzales. #BullDozier, Winker, Ruiz, Taylor. (Chris Rodriguez)
2014-07-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hunter Dozier starting 3b for KC next year?
(scott from az)
2016. (Chris Rodriguez)
2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)Another prominent baseball opinion had Hunter Dozier going from unranked this offseason to #39 on their update today. BP didn't include him. How close was he to the Top 50?
(Kurt from Milwaukee)
We've put a lot of eyes on Dozier this season, starting in camp and extending into the season. We have a very good handle on this player, and while we all certainly love his overall game, the reality is probably more of a role 5 (regular) than a huge impact talent with a higher upside. (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2014-07-09 15:00:00 (link to chat)I had thought that Hunter Dozier was listed as a potential 6/6 in his last eye witness account. Does this mean that Nick Williams and Dozier have similar hit/power tools? What are your thoughts on Dozier?
(oakiegu007 from NY)
They do grade wise but get there in very... extremely.. titanically different ways. Williams is speed and Dozier is strength. Dozier's ceiling is a bit lower but much safer floor.

If everyone played baseball the way Dozier does there would be world peace. Look for the spring training notes on him. I. Love. #Bulldozier. (Ryan Parker)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)12-team dynasty, 6x6 (with BB for batters, K/BB for P) 7 player MiLB rosters: I have a couple fringier MiLB players right now (Winker, Berrios) and wondering if any of these avail. guys would be better adds: Hunter Dozier, Raimel Tapia (still don't quite get the hype but I'm not a scout), Michael Taylor, Daniel Norris, Josh Bell. Thanks!
(NorDub from PNW)
Definitely Tapia, Daniel Norris is worth a look. Winker and Berrios are good though, I'd probably wait and assess after next monday when the BP top 50 comes out. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Hunter Dozier our savior at the black hole known as 3B in KC? When and what can we expect from him? Thanks...
(KCHomer from KCK)
Our mid-atlantic guys who have seen Dozier a bunch this year really like him. He just got promoted to Double-A so that puts him on the doorstep, though he won't be up this year. Next summer could be possible though. (Jeff Moore)
2014-06-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Jeff: thanks for your frequent updates on prospects. When 2014 is over, what players do you anticipate will have made the biggest jump up the ranks of prospects?
(howling wolf from Bethesda MD)
Joey Gallo has to be among the leaders in the clubhouse for that honor. He was near the bottom of our Top 101 before the season because of the questions about his ability to make contact against better pitching. Heís answered them with a vengeance. Any time a prospect makes great improvement at his biggest weakness, itís significant.

Other candidates include Raimel Tapia, David Dahl, and Hunter Dozier. (Jeff Moore)
2014-06-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is the ETA on Hunter Dozier? Do you think he is going to be an above average 3B option for the Royals?
(Dave from Scranton)
Two of our guys have filed reports on him. Both believe he can be an everyday third baseman and have his ETA at 2016. (Jeff Moore)
2014-05-27 11:30:00 (link to chat)Hunter Dozier's stats look ordinary until you look at the splits and see he's raking away from Frawley Stadium. Is that enough to earn him a promotion this summer? What are your thoughts on Dozier?
(Bill from Bozeman)
I wouldn't pay too close of attention to the stats, especially in that park. Dozier is a gamer. He comes to play every day, has plenty of #want, and can hit. He'll do fine at 3B, and the scouting reports are far superior to the stats. He absolutely loves to play the game every day, which is underratedly important. He's going to work at his craft, and continue to hone it. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-05-15 20:00:00 (link to chat)Two 3B prospects that seem to be hitting well: Hunter Dozier and Mitch Nay. What's your thoughts on them? High ceilings?
(Karl from San Angelo)
I'm a bigger fan of Dozier as he's the better hitter. Nay has a little more power, but his minor league numbers overstate his fantasy potential and I'm not sure how much of that power is usable. Dozier's ceiling is a high-average, decent power third baseman. Those are in pretty high demand these days. (Bret Sayre)
2014-05-13 11:00:00 (link to chat)Has Hunter Dozier displayed enough to be deserving of his higher draft position and does this affect your outlook on him?
(Victor from Dumfries)
He's legit. At the time, it seemed like quite the reach, even after they were able to pop Manaea. But after watching him a ton in camp, and talking to teams that drafted soon after the Royals did, Dozier wasn't going to last very long in that draft. He has more industry fans that I initially realized. (Jason Parks)
2014-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Between Hunter Dozier and Mitch Nay, who has the higher ceiling and who has the higher floor? Also, what position do you see each most likely to settle into?
(digiderek from Nevada)
Based on what I know, I'd lean toward Dozier on both. He seems more likely to stick on the left side of the infield, presumably at third base, which takes pressure off his bat. I don't know where Nay lands defensively. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hunter Dozier or Christian Arroyo?
(Kyle from Seattle)
Dozier (Jason Parks)
