BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 It's been about 20 years since the Phillies' farm system had a shortstop generating nearly the buzz that Crawford has. That predecessor was only the greatest shortstop in the history of a 130-year-old franchise, so we're obviously starting things off on very rational and grounded footing with comps for Crawford, who seems poised to be the latest injection of youth for the major-league club by some point in 2016. While some wonder if the giant neon signage reading "THE FUTURE" emblazoned with red and white pinstripes could use another few hundred feet of tubing, the naturally counterbalancing "yeah, but" doesn't offer a ton of disincentive. Will Crawford be Carlos Correa? Incredibly unlikely. Does he have the hands and footwork to be a reliable defensive shortstop while showcasing an ever-steadying offensive game, with 10 to 15 home runs a year out on the horizon? He sure does, and his graph is turning parabolic. With no clear obstacle in his way, the big-league shortstop job is his for the taking, and the neon couldn't seem brighter or more inviting.
2015 The Phillies front office gets picked on a lot, which means it doesn't always get the credit it deserves for individual moves. Crawford, the 16th overall pick in 2013, has a shot to go down as the best value-for-the-spot pick in that year's first round. Assuming they don't trade him for some 30-something former star—now, really, was that dig necessary?—the Phillies have their long-term replacement for Jimmy Rollins lined up and cost-controlled. Crawford unquestionably has the leather for short, but some questions remain about how his bat holds up at higher levels; his proponents forecast added bulk, while detractors see a contact-oriented swing and little strength. It's all a bit rough still, so don't get too excited by Rollins being traded. Crawford will need more time than that.
2014 The Phillies selected Crawford 16th overall in June, their reward for falling well short of expectations the year prior. Crawford handled the Rookie league and Low-A just fine in his first taste of professional baseball, posting a .405 on-base percentage and producing nearly as many walks as strikeouts. He likely won't ever hit for power, but if his current tools progress as expected, the club will be able to live with it. The Phillies have traditionally brought players along slowly, so it will be interesting to see whether they rush Crawford to be ready to succeed Jimmy Rollins when his contract expires, likely after 2015.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2016-04-21 19:00:00 (link to chat)Any minor leaguers who have seen their expected 2016 MLB production rise through the first three weeks, either due to high performance or changes in MLB opportunities?
(Sky from The Roc)
Jesse Winker is the guy who looks like he'll be up earlier based on early performance. Jorge Alfaro has been great, but I can't see the Phillies rushing him based on early performance. J.P. Crawford's walk rate is encouraging, and could push him up a little earlier if the Phils aren't worried about service time. (Mike Gianella)
2016-03-09 19:00:00 (link to chat)You mentioned catchers being tough to gauge with playing time and development. We've also seen some SS/MI emerge offensively lately with LeMahuie, B Crawford, Cozart (til hurt), etc Who is set to emerge this year at MI/SS? ( owings, Jace Peterson, Wimer Flores, Heckyv, Mercer, etc)
(Bart Bennison from Here)
Peterson has a shot. So does Cory Spangenberg. The NL is so thin though that it's hard to guess. No one has mentioned him but I wouldn't be surprised to see J.P. Crawford come up in the second half. (Mike Gianella)
2016-01-21 19:00:00 (link to chat)Is Franklin Barreto a top 10 prospect by midseason? Or is that above his ceiling?
( Billy B from Oakland)
Hey there Billy. That DePodesta thing in Cleveland is crazy right??? Um...Barreto is getting close to that already given the glut of elite prospects that reached the Majors last season. He's not near the level of someone like J.P. Crawford tho. I'd put him, Rodgers, Turner, Swanson, Anderson and Arcia ahead of him at the position just off the top of my head. Gleyber Torres is in the mix there too. (George Bissell)
2016-01-21 19:00:00 (link to chat)Who are this years Correa, Seager, and Buxton?
(Jared from Oklahoma)
I'll give you a couple prospects/young guys that step into the spotlight for me. A few established younger guys I think will bounce-back are Javier Baez, Jurickson Profar and Joey Gallo...MILB I'll go Nomar Mazara, J.P. Crawford and A.J. Reed as my big-three for hitters. (George Bissell)
2015-11-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Best prospect you saw at the AFL?
(Aaron from San Diego )
Alex Reyes, and I'm not sure if it was close. J.P. Crawford was the best position player I saw, followed by Austin Meadows. It was kinda a weak year, but, those guys are legit. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-06-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Assuming that all of the prospects that have been called up this year exhaust their prospect status, what would be your updated top 5 at the moment?
(AA from FL)
I don't have a list because I'm not a prospect guy. If I did make one I'd probably have some combination of Yoan Moncada, Lucas Giolito, Corey Seager, Miguel Sano, and J.P. Crawford. (R.J. Anderson)
2015-02-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)Best reason to be optimistic about Maikel Franco this season?
(Brendan G from Bainbridge)
Be optimistic because Franco is pretty damn good and hits the ball pretty damn hard. If I were running the Phillies Id have this guy pencilled in as the starting 3B for the next 5 years in my plans. He's going to hit plenty though his slash lines won't fit exactly in the boxes we think they should. I think he could spend more time in the minors and it won't hurt him, but I'd almost prefer to see him face big leaguers and let him see exactly what he needs to tighten up to succeed at the next level. As for his glove, I see him as a fringe average defender in the "bigger 3B with a strong arm who isn't particularly mobile but has a good first move" mold. Franco comes up short of a star, but between him and J.P. Crawford I'd consider the future left side of my infield set and worry about the rest of the ballclub. (Al Skorupa)
2014-07-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Name an prospect from the Futures game that was not in the spotlight who could end up being an All Star?
(Kyle from DC)
I was watching the game on my phone in an airport (isn't technology wonderful?) so I'm not super aware of who was getting all of the spotlight, but I like Kevin Plawecki, and J.P. Crawford as guys who didn't seem to be getting a ton of attention. If you haven't noticed, I like guys with good strikeout to walk ratios. (Jeff Moore)
2014-04-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Could you give 3 prospects right now that you think will make it to top 100 prospects lists by this time next year? Players making big jumps?
(Luis from Nowhere near Brooklyn)
Michael Feliz, J.P. Crawford, and Lewis Thorpe, to name a few. Just guessing. (Jeff Moore)
2014-01-17 10:00:00 (link to chat)Can J.P. Crawford become a star and does he have a chance to become a top 25-50 prospect after this year?
(Mike from Utica, NY)
I don't think he becomes a star. Good prospect that can stick up the middle, so that's going to push his value, especially if he can swing it. But I don't see a top tier type. Maybe I'm low on him. (Jason Parks)
2014-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on J.P. Crawford? The next Jimmy Rollins?
(Sagar from Chicago)
New chat rule. No making comps on guys who haven't played a full professional season yet to guys with a borderline Hall of Fame case. (Jeff Moore)
2013-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you think is the 3rd best hitter from the draft? (I'm guessing you have Bryant and Frazier 1,2)
(Jake from Toledo)
Right now, it's a close race between Tim Anderson, J.P. Crawford and Dominic Smith. (Bret Sayre)
