2015-09-30 19:00:00 (link to chat)Do you expect any of these guys to bounceback in 2016?: Arismendy Alcantara D.J. Peterson Alen Hanson Alex Jackson David Dahl Tyler Kolek Braden Shipley Reynaldo Lopez Sorry for the huge question, thanks!!!
(Max from Connecticut)
I would put my faith in Reynaldo Lopez and David Dahl. Arismendy Alcantara's approach hasn't matured from where it was last year so I'm not expecting him to bounce back. Alex Jackson looked lost at the MWL, he still has talent but that might take some time for him to figure it out. I've heard awful things on Tyler Kolek, high exertion with a terrible body and nary a dependable secondary pitch.

Braden Shipley hurts me. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-09-30 19:00:00 (link to chat)Can you elaborate on Braden Shipley and his violent tendencies?
(Jack from Texas)
I fell in love with the profile, athletic and armed with a plus potential change and a curveball that showed development as 2014 wore on. This year I've gotten reports on his stuff and the term used to describe it was "middling". He had a strong August but caution is to be exercised here. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)So Braden Shipley has been disappointing this season, but I feel like the hate has gone wayyy too far. Guy's still new to pitching and has a 3.43 ERA in Double-A, and is giving up almost no HR's.
(Chase from LA)
Yeah, this is a good point. Shipley hasn't great by any means, but I know some who are ready to write the guy off, and that's not fair. I'd say he's fallen behind Aaron Blair, but that's okay, he's still a potential mid-rotation starter. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on a few question mark pitching prospects, Jameson Taillon,Braden Shipley, and Mark Appel? What do you see out of them over the next couple seasons?
(Tony from ND)
Really have to see Taillon healthy before we make a judgment. I think Appel could be an OK mid-tier starter, but the ideas of him being an ace or even a #2 should be removed out of our heads. Shipley is the guy of the three who excites me the most. You have to be careful with comps, but I like the Jacob deGrom parallels here, with the converted shortstop who throws 95 MPH. He needs more refinement, but I could see him surprising in his debut. (Mike Gianella)
2015-02-04 19:00:00 (link to chat)How would you rank Aaron Blair, Marco Gonzalez, and Braden Shipley? And will Eddie Butler ultimately be a starter? Thank you!
(Dennis from LA)
Shipley, gap, Butler, Blair, Gonzales. Way too early to write off Butler-- let's see how the breaking ball comes along. A RHP with a big time FB and a swing and miss quality CH is usually a good bet. (Jordan Gorosh)
2015-02-18 19:00:00 (link to chat)Welcome Brendan. Thoughts on Braden Shipley after (potentially) catching him with Hillsboro? Seems to be a big helium guy this year. What's changed since 2013?
(brenly from arizona)
Shipley was drafted on the strength of his fastball/change up combination. There were a lot of questions about his curve because he didn't throw it much at Nevada, but it wound up being a better and more advanced pitch than most people were expecting. He's risen up prospect rankings accordingly. (Brendan Gawlowski)
2015-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Braden Shipley's late intro to pitching and subsequent quick development, do you think his ceiling could be that of a #2 if he keeps developing? I realize mid rotation arm is more realistic, but could a #2 be within reach or does he just lack the stuff to get there.
(treynay3 from Indy)
Shipley could reach no. 2 status without question. There were even early iterations of the rankings where I had him slotted as the top prospect in the system. His mechanics aren't yet second-nature for him, and he needs to iron that out before his arsenal makes the jump and becomes more dependable. But he has the characteristics I look for in trying to identify arms that will improve mechanically, and there's a lot of juice in the arm. Don't count on #2 production, but it's there for the taking. (NL West Top 10s With Nick Faleris)
2014-11-04 18:00:00 (link to chat)The Eyewitness Reports on Braden Shipley are encouraging, but I was wondering if you could fill us in a little more on him. Thanks.
(Dave from Des Moines)
I haven't seen Shipley since college, and while I've talked to people about him this year, I think the best information you're going to get are the Eyewitness Reports we have here on the site (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_pit.php?reportid=156 and http://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_pit.php?reportid=163). Those are two really well-written reports that represent a strong picture of what Shipley brings to the table and can be going forward. (Mark Anderson)
2014-11-04 18:00:00 (link to chat)I know you aren't a fantasy guy, but I just traded Margot for Braden Shipley. Do you see Shipley as more of a safer bet to realize his potential?
(Ryan from MTL)
Margot isn't as risky as most guys his age and with his experience level, but Shipley is probably a more stable prospect with a greater likelihood of success. (Mark Anderson)
2014-07-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Mark, where do you see the ETA for Diamondback hurlers Braden Shipley and Aaron Blair? Also, are the mid rotation to back end guys or a chance for more?
(Brett from New Jersey)
Shipley is showing the stuff and enough polish to move very quickly through the system and could reach the big leagues late next year, though 2016 is more likely. Blair is squarely in the 2016 time frame for me. Shipley has a much higher ceiling and be a #2 if he can put it all together; Blair has the type of ceiling you noted. (Mark Anderson)
2014-06-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Higher upside - Henry Owens or Braden Shipley? See either one making an ace level leap anytime soon?
(John from LA)
Braden Shipley, whom I could be seeing next week, has the higher upside by far. (Ron Shah)
2014-04-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Any word on Braden Shipley? Heard he has biceps tendonitis. Is that serious? TJ? I see him as a solid #2 to Archie. What do you think?
(tsweber from Reno)
Big fan of Shipley. Dig the stuff and the delivery - he stays back a little bit more than I would like, but the balance+posture are excellent. Tendinitis can be a bit of a wild card, as we don't know the root of the inflammation, and biceps tendinitis can have implications for elbow and shoulder. The D'Backs will be wise to stay cautious in order to avoid the risk of cascade injury (detecting a theme in this chat), and with careful management the minor setback will just be a speed bump in his development. I am not too concerned, so I think that we can back off the TJ ledge.

On the jukebox: Warren G, "Regulators" (Doug Thorburn)
2014-04-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat. In your opinion, which hitter and pitcher, outside of the top 50, have the highest ceilings?
(cracker73 from Florida )
Alex Reyes, Jose Martinez, Braden Shipley, and Hunter Harvey on the pitching side; Nick Williams, Raimel Tapia, and David Dahl on the positional side of the ball. (Jason Parks)
2014-01-17 10:00:00 (link to chat)Name game time! Outside of the top 50 prospects, give me 2 pitchers and 2 hitters you think are going to be well within the top 50 by this time next year!
(vegetto712 from Florida)
David Dahl and Josh Bell with the stick; Alex Reyes and Braden Shipley with the arm (Jason Parks)
2014-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of a ceiling do you see for Braden Shipley? Could he be a role 6/#2 starter?
(Mark from Arizona)
That may be his ultimate ceiling, but he's probably more of a High-5, #3 starter, which is still really good. (Mark Anderson)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Top 5 dynasty prospects from this past draft?
(John from My basement)
Off the top of my head: Bryant, Frazier, Gray, Stewart, Appel. The fifth one was tough for me. I also really like JP Crawford, Braden Shipley, Hunter Harvey and Reese McGuire. The first four I'm a little more confident on. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)More promising potential: Braden Shipley or Hunter Harvey?
(Alex from Denver)
I'd take Harvey's ceiling, but also high on Shipley. (Jason Parks)
2013-10-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which prospect will breakout next year?
(Cards from St. Louis)
Braden Shipley; Hunter Harvey; Edwin Diaz; Chi Chi Gonzalez

Just to name a few (Jason Parks)
