BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2005 The stathead GM's favorite backup. Draws walks, hits for power, been bouncing around the baseball world looking for a regular gig since Janet Reno roamed the earth. Wilson's going to end up getting a 150-PA job somewhere once a catcher goes down with some sort of injury near the beginning of the season. Very capable of helping a contending club.
2003 A perennial member of the Ken Phelps All-Star Team, it was nice to see Wilson finally earn a full year of major league service time. A subpar defensive catcher who spent his best offensive years in places like Norwich and Durham, Wilson will be a useful contributor for another season, which is all the Blue Jays want.
2002 A long-time BP favorite, Wilson is a minor-league veteran with talent to help a big-league club in at least a backup role and perhaps more than that. He probably won't get an opportunity in Oakland; the A's have re-signed Greg Myers to back up Ramon Hernandez, so unless Wilson is interested in being injury insurance, he's likely to move somewhere else. Another nice pickup by the Blue Jays, where he'll stick.
2001 He's overqualified for a major-league job, even if you dock him for his defensive problems. As a backup who can pinch-hit or even DH a few times a week, Wilson would be a tremendous player for $200,000. He's 30 and has migrated to the A's: if it's gonna happen, now is the time.
2000 Having failed to catch the eye of either expansion team, what does he do now? Head back to the Yankees system. Given an opportunity, Wilson could be Chris Hoiles for a few years, drawing walks, hitting for power and taking unnecessary criticism about his defense. There's really nothing not to like about his game, although with his mom lurking in the Devil Rays' Usenet newsgroup, I admit that I tread lightly. Did I do OK, Mrs. Wilson?.
1997 In an organization with serious troubles at catcher, Wilson was a godsend from the Yankees’ organization. Wilson has some power and some patience, and would give the team a much better option as a starter than Pena should Alomar go down with yet another injury.
