2009-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)While I'm usually a JP supporter I'm growing tired of his inability to fill the LF/DH hole. Shannon Stewart, Brad Wilkerson, Dave Dellucci, Kevin Millar and Russ Adams clearly aren't the answer so what would you do?
(Bill from Toronto)
I think he absolutely had the right idea with Travis Snider at the outset of the year, but it hasn't worked out yet. He didn't hit in ~100 PA, he had some back problems, he's missed a month. He's only 21, so it's far too early to give up hope that he can be the long-term solution there. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-06-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you have a good player comp for Andrew McCutchen? Maybe a Crawford/Milledge combo.
(Neal from Pittsburgh)
If I showed you a career line like this, would you like it or be disappointed?

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/dt/stewash01.php (Will Carroll)
2009-05-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)How much longer do Buc's fans have to suffer through the wilting Moss with "The Franchise" Andrew McCutchen ready to rise?
(Ethan from Berkshire County)
If McCutchen is the franchise, there's problems. He's good, yes, but if you put a slider in a police lineup, he probably couldn't recognize it. I think PECOTA has him right with Shannon Stewart. (Will Carroll)
2009-03-10 14:30:00 (link to chat)How in the world will Toronto ever win the division?
(Eric from Toronto)
By building a very good baseball team. They had 60% of one last year, but didn't fill out the offense. That's not money--that's choosing Shannon Stewart and David Eckstein. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-09-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are the Jays contenders if they would have started the season with Gaston and giving Lind more playing time or is this just a nice looking winning streak that has happened late in the season?
(Ted from at the pool)
Lind's presence over the dessicated remains of Shannon Stewart or Kevin Mench/Brad Wilkerson certainly would have improved matters, but there's a lot of other factors that would have had to go right - better health (and fortune) from Dustin McGowan, Shaun Marcum, B.J. Ryan, Vernon Wells, Scott Rolen... wow, that's a lot right there. A.J. Burnett avoiding his mid-season cold streak, too. Given some better luck in breaks like those, they coulda been contenders, but as it is, it's just a nice-looking winning streak. Their potential as spoilers (7 games vs. Boston as Joe from Tewksbury mentioned above) probably shouldn't be underestimated. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-09-09 13:30:00 (link to chat)Would Delgado be the least valuable MVP winner ever? I know there probably has to be somebody from the 50s or 60s like Hank Sauer that had worse seasons, but no one recently is jumping to mind. And this is comign from a Mets fan who would slot him behind Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Santana and Pelfrey.
(J.P. from Hartford)
He'd be in the mix. I don't think he's a realistic candidate, but then again, I didn't think Shannon Stewart could finish fourth a few years ago. Delgado is the third-best player in his own team's infield. That would be one hell of a bad MVP. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-06-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)I like the potential trade series. How realistic do you think the following scenario could be: Jays send AJ Burnett and one of Shannon Stewart / Brad Wilkerson to the Cubs for Rich Hill and Matt Murton? Can that be a great way to kill 4 birds with one stone, or what?
(rawagman from TO)
In making such a deal, the Cubs would make themselves measurably worse. I say go for it! (Dayn Perry)
2008-06-20 13:30:00 (link to chat)Hey Joe, how long do you think the Blue Jays will let Adam Lind crush the ball in AAA before giving him a real shot in the bigs? I know he has struggled when they bring him up and play him once a week, but will he ever get a fair shot? Is there anybody who has been mishandled more than Mr. Lind?
(Steve from Cambridge)
Plenty of guys have been handled worse than Lind has. Willie Greene mocks his pain, for one. I just don't get how a team can choose Shannon Stewart, who's just a terrible baseball player now, over Lind. Or drag in Brad Wilkerson and Kevin Mench. Or play Joe Inglett. It just doesn't make sense. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-04-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)I could tolerate the Jays' release of Thomas if Snider was knocking the door down in the minors but is there any justifaction for doing it to get Joe Inglett and Shannon Stewart at bats?
(Bill from Toronto)
Maybe. On paper, it was a stupid thing to do. At the same time, of all the information regarding the release and what happened, you and I probably know 20% of it. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-03-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)80 wins for the A's!? isn't this team much worse than last year's squad that was sub 80 wins? not to mention the probability of a Billy Bean firesale at the allstar break?
(hsrhee from southport ct)
The A's had an awful lot of things go wrong last year. I mean, both Chavez and Crosby were just awful. Shannon Stewart sucked up more than 600 plate appearances for them. They got essentially replacement level performance out of the 1B and DH slots, at least until Jack Cust came along. Rich Harden was (predictably) unhealthy. They also somewhat underperformed their Pythagorean record. So this is a team that was due for some regression back upward toward the mean, which in this case is enough to outweigh the losses of Swisher and Haren. (Nate Silver)
2008-02-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who has the stronger arm? Me or Juan Pierre? (Note: I "probably" lead my slow pitch softball league in outfield assists last year, although most of the base runners have had hip replacements recently.)
(Clay from St. Louis, MO)
Well, if your league is anything like the one I played in last year, getting an assist is actually an accomplishment since we're too old to try to stretch anything or for that matter want to even consider sliding. So I'd have to say yes, your arm is probably competitive.

For 2007 Pierre ranked dead last among centerfielders at -7.3 with a rate of -6.0. Grady Sizemore is second to last at -4.6 with David DeJesus (-4.5) not far behind. In 2006 Pierre was -1.8 and in 2005 -1.6. From 2005-2007 he finished second to last at -10.7 ahead of only Johnny Damon (-11.2). He wasn't nearly as bad as far as rate was concerned because of his greater playing time (-3.0 per 550 opportunities). From a rate perspective Brady Clark did the worst among centerfielders who received much playing time (256 adjusted games in those three years) at -5.3 runs per 550 opportunities.

Who was the worst in 2005-2007 you might ask (ok, you didn't but play along)? Shawn Green was -16.0 and Shannon Stewart was -11.8 before we get to Damon and Pierre. Jason Bay (-10.5) and Xavier Nady (-10.4) were no great shakes either. (Dan Fox)
2008-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Last off-season, we saw some $ thrown around, reflective of the enormous current revenues for MLB (i.e., Gil Meche rolling around on a pile of $100 bills). This off-season, you have guys like Shannon Stewart, Lohse, etc., practically begging for work. Was this an industry learning more? Or was it just a lack of "name" players?
(Jim Clancy from Exhibition Stadium)
I think more the former than the latter. Take it from experience: you don't have to be a "VORPie" to share a mindset with one about player value. (Christina Kahrl)
