2013 Everybody loves a good backflip, and Hawkins was eager to please, flipping his way into prospect loversí hearts with his pre-draft athletic displays, then following that up with impressive on-the-field production after he signed. Hawkins already shows a mature body, with some concerns that his good weight could blossom into bad weight as he ages. He has good speed for his size, but is unlikely to remain in center field, putting more pressure on his bat to carry the . . . weight. With plus bat speed and strength, Hawkins projects to hit for above-average power, giving him the necessary ingredient for a thumping corner outfielder.

2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)What are the chances Courtney Hawkins puts together a credible major league career? Last year's debacle apparently didn't kill him. That's a victory right there, isn't it?
(GrinnellSteve from Grinnell)
Developmental speaking, surviving and rebounding from setback is always a positive thing. But I don't see Hawkins as an impact talent at the major league level. Could be a AAAA type or maybe an up/down power guy only guy, but I don't see the hit tool utility to bring the bat into a major league regular profile. (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2014-04-16 19:00:00 (link to chat)Going on a week-long baseball road trip in NC starting tomorrow. Anyone on the Salem team I'd want to see(when they play Winston-Salem)?
(Silverback38 from VA)
Bad luck - Salem is pretty much the only boring affiliate Boston has this year. Try to go when Brian Johnson is starting, and look out for Simon Mercedes, who I know turned some heads this spring. On offense, it's Vicino and Dent, which isn't inspiring. The good news is you'll see Courtney Hawkins and Tim Anderson on the other side of the field, and if you're hot the breeze from Keon Barnum's swing should cool you down. (Ben Carsley)
2014-04-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Did any prospect come to camp who drastically improved/got worse to the point where it greatly changed your opinion of their ceilings?
(MonkeyEpoxy from Amarillo)
A few: Chris Bostick with the Rangers looked a lot better than I expected. It's a 2B profile, but I'm sold this kid can hit, which could make him more than just a utility option down the line. He really impressed me. I wasn't especially high on A's BJ Boyd coming in, but I dropped him a grade after seeing his spring physique and swing at the plate. I'm not a fan. I wanted to like Courtney Hawkins more but I just can't go high on the guy. It's not a role 3 or anything because of the power potential and athleticism, but I can't put a major league regular grade on him. He's a 4 for me. (Jason Parks)
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Let's say Chicago or Detroit called saying they want my players and are willing to offer prospects. Who should I ask for? Both farm systems I think stink.
(Kevin from Houston )
Considering you can't yet ask for this year's draft picks, the pickings are going to be pretty slim. From Detroit, the obvious answer is Nick Castellanos, but you could also be intrigued by players like Endrys Briceno, Drew VerHagen, Brian McCann, and Steven Moya. From the White Sox you can look at Courtney Hawkins, despite what Mortimer says, and I still believe in Trayce Thompson a little bit. (Mark Anderson)
2013-09-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is there anyone in the White Sox' system (including September call-ups) that have a somewhat-conceivable shot at being above-average regulars?
(Ethan Spalding from Madison, Wi)
Courtney Hawkins obviously had a disappointing season but still has potential. Erik Johnson and Semien have a chance to be role 5 guys, which isn't crazy exciting or above average but still solid. I'm looking forward to checking out Tim Anderson at instructs in a couple weeks. I've heard good things there. (Jason Cole)

(Momma Hawkins from Behind you)
I assumed I would start with this one. Yes, I graded Courtney Hawkins as an organizational player. I can recognize the plus raw power, but I have severe doubts on how much of the power will be used against quality pitching. Hawkins' pitch recognition is to the level that pitchers are able to exploit him in every at bat. Physically, Hawkins has a body that has the potential to get worse.

Going forward I hope Hawkins is able to make the necessary adjustments, improve his hit tool, and jump back onto the prospect radar. For me, it just is not there right now. (Zach Mortimer)

(Shawn from My Cubicle)
From what I can tell, there aren't many that we're complete opposites on. I think I'm a little lighter on Taijuan Walker than he is, and I think I have a little more belief in Courtney Hawkins than he does. Although given Hawkins' start (45 K's in 23 games!), I'm starting to wonder...even though he is in High-A. (Jason Cole)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)Courtney Hawkins - what's his ceiling?
(xavier from texas)
First-division corner outfielder, but I'm not as high on Hawkins as others. I know he's a Texan and I love the back-flipping aspect, but I've seen him several times at the pro level and I don't see the loud tools. He has a good approach, and he can sting a ball when it hits the barrel, but his bat has never grabbed me and forced me to love it. Sample size, I guess. (Jason Parks)
2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat)We're used to being limited to one, but 0 in the top 101? Where art thou Courtney Hawkins?
(justiniodiddly from Chi)
I'm not sure where he is. He was close to making it. Was on initial list. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)I've always heard Steve Finley comps on Dahl. Is it insane to hear a baseball prospect writer say Courtney Hawkins perfect world comp is Jim Rice?
(Mike from Utica, NY)
Comps can be ridiculous. I get it, Courtney Hawkins is black so let's make sure to offer up another black player as a comp. It can be very lazy, but then again, most online scouting is lazy. (Jason Parks)
2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)What have the reports been on Courtney Hawkins? I assume he's the best prospect the White Sox have, right?
(Justin from Chicago)
Great athlete, speed, strength, can throw, plus bat speed. I think he's their best prospect yes. (Jason A. Churchill)
