2016-06-07 12:00:00 (link to chat)What is going on with Wuilmer Becerra? He's smashing the ball but with zero power. Shouldn't we be seeing that now that he's 21 and no longer plays in the SAL?
(Bryan from Montclair, NJ)
The great unanswered Mets prospect question of 2016 (it's been really boring otherwise). Got a report on him that says he has flattened out the swing a bit and is gearing for contact and it is working. He also has had shoulder and back issues this year, that could sap power. This is where I put in the Twitter shrug and hope they promote him in July. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2016-02-25 12:00:00 (link to chat)Just read the Mets top prospect lists. Seems like BP is much lower on a few Mets prospects (Gavin Cecchini, Wuilmer Becerra and Dom Smith specifically) than other prospect evaluators. Any reason for this?
(Gortat from Lake Eerie)
I don't know that I am that much lower on those guys (well okay, Smith), 4-10 is very very fluid here, and I had a bunch of different orders working throughout the process. Eventually you just have to file. But some specific reasons.

Cecchini: I just don't see a shortstop here. I've been told at times I have high standards for the position, but there isn't one tool or skill he has defensively that you can point to and say "that is a major league shortstop skill."

Becerra: Man, I like Becerra. I am pretty sure I had one of the first public reports on him, and his improvements this year during the jump to full season ball are heartening. I don't think a 55/45 is a bad prospect either. But there is a lot of pressure on the bat in right field, and scouts like him less than I do.

Dominic Smith: I wrote a whole bunch about this for my debate with Chris, but I've never seen even plus raw in BP, so I don't know where the power is coming from. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2016-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Wilson. Was wondering if I could get your opinion and knowledge on these 3 low minor prospects: Stone Garrett, Wuilmer Becerra, Luis Alexander Basabe. How would you rank them if they were in your system?
(Jerry from Earth)
Basabe is my boo, and I'd take him over just about any other short-season dude at this point. Wrote about him last week: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=28510

Garrett is an interesting power/speed guy who we got good reports on re: strides with approach in the NYPL last year. If you're diving into short-season guys he's on the list to be sure.

Becerra I'd have third on this list, ceiling's a little lower than the other two. You can get the goods on here: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=28523 (Wilson Karaman)
2016-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Chris. Was wondering if I could get your opinion on these 3 low minor prospects: Stone Garrett, Wuilmer Becerra, Luis Alexander Basabe. How would you rank them if they were in your system?
(Jerry from Earth)
I like all three. I'd go Basabe first, followed by Becerra and Garrett. Many in the industry prefer Garrett, and I may just be late on him. But Basabe to me has the highest probability and ceiling, so that's the call for me. (Christopher Crawford)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)Professor: What's the word on Wuilmer Becerra, the other player the Mets received in the RA Dickey trade?
(wileecoyote121 from Larchmont, NY)
Very young; lots of promise; true seven-figure talent. It's a long way off, man. I'll report back on the all the short-season guys I get info on this year. We are going to be scouting more of the short-season leagues in 2013. (Jason Parks)
