2016-06-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks Chris. It seems like Ronald Guzman has taken a leap forward this year. How high do you put his ceiling?
(Keith from Farmington, CT)
I think he can be a starting first baseman. I'm not sure if we're looking at, like, an all-star or anything, but a starting first baseman. Didn't look like that not too long ago, so, that's good. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-06-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Chris, with the article on state of the First Base position this morning, can you talk about the position as it currently sits in the minor leagues? It seems like there are some promising bats coming up, but do any fit the traditional first base profile? I'm thinking guys like Dom Smith, Josh Naylor, Dan Vogelbach, Rowdy Tellez, Ronald Guzman, Casey Gillaspie, Josh Ockimey, etc... Thanks!!
(Matthew from KY)
It's definitely in a better place than before. I'm not sold on guys like Vogelbach and Tellez, but I love Smith, I really like Gillaspie and Ockimey is really intriguing. Not a position I love being "loaded" because, well, first base, but it's nice to see some prospects there. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-06-16 21:00:00 (link to chat)I might be going somewhat obscure with this question & apologize in advance but if you could have 1 of these 1B's, OF's, & SP's in a dynasty league who would you want & why: Josh Ockimey or Ronald Guzman, Brayan Hernandez or Brayan Emery, Christopher Acosta or Roniel Raudes?
(Max from In an Uber)
Guzman over Ockimey. Emery over Hernandez. Raudes over Acosta. (Bret Sayre)
2016-05-16 23:00:00 (link to chat)Can we get your thoughts on some diverse group of prospects: Yohander Mendez, Ronald Guzman, Jacob Faria, Tyler O'Neill, & Max Fried? Can we see any of them this year in the show & should we be buying or concerned in there early season performance?
(Bob from Northern Hemisphere)
I've had High Desert come to town twice already and managed to miss both Mendez and Luis Ortiz both times. Very good reports on Mendez though, his performance has been legit. Guzman's doing things this year that I did not think he was going to get to a place to do. My report on him from last year is below. He spent most of his season lost last year, was tinkering with his setup every time I saw him & never showed any signs - in BP, in games - of an ability to turn on the ball with authority. O'Neill looks like Mr. Universe and has some requisite stiffness in his swing, but effort so far's confirming that it wasn't all Bakersfield's toy store dimensions last year. I don't have any updates on Fried from this spring, sorry. David Lee was lukewarm on Faria in a recent writeup.

Faria: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=28975 (Wilson Karaman)
2016-05-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can we get your thoughts on some diverse group of prospects: Joe Musgrove, Ronald Guzman, Jacob Faria, Tyler O'Neill, & Max Fried? Can we see any of them this year in the show & should we be buying or concerned in there early season performance?
(Bob from Northern Hemisphere)
Well, that certainly is a diverse group of prospects. The only one I would say is going to make an impact in 2016 is Musgrove, he was just promoted to Triple-A after dominating in Corpus Christi. Really impressed with O'Neill's start, the approach has improved a lot over this first month. Fried is struggling to throw strikes (common theme!) but like Fedde, some rust to shake off there, he needs to just stay healthy. But yeah, the guy who is gonna make an impact in 2016 is Musgrove. I was too low on him this preseason. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-05-18 19:00:00 (link to chat)Can we get your thoughts on some diverse group of prospects: Rowdy Tellez, Ronald Guzman, Jake Gatewood, Tyler O'Neill, & Ti'Quan Forbes? Should we be buying or concerned from there early season performance?
(Bob from Northern Hemisphere)
I'm a huge Tellez guy. He's 21 and I think the power is coming. I also like the approach at the plate, he's walked nearly as many times as he's struck out this season. Obviously he's a big dude, so that's going to be something to monitor but the swing and approach are there for me. (George Bissell)
2016-04-25 23:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you see moving up to occupy the top tier of Rangers position prospects once the big-3 of Brinson, Mazara, and Gallo graduate to the bigs? Guys like Cordell, Ronald Guzman, Andy Ibanez, etc. have looked good to start the season.
(Kristen from Canada)
I think Tate's start to the year has to be seen as very encouraging. Leody Taveras is only 17, but initial reports have been intriguing. I missed Jairo Beras last week, he was out with an injury, but look forward to seeing what him in the next few weeks, and it's supposed to be an interesting bat. I liked some of the things Travis Demeritte can do, though the hit tool's a big question mark. I'll have notes up on him this week. Michael De Leon's glove is outstanding, and Josh Morgan shows interesting versatility and skills.

Basically you're going to see the system morph from a troika of 60+ OFP guys at the top to one that's more balanced around arms and positional depth. (Wilson Karaman)
2016-04-25 23:00:00 (link to chat)Any chance you can hit us with some knowledge on some Low Minor prospects from the Rangers system in Ronald Guzman, Travis Demeritte, & Jairo Beras? What about from the Brewers in Monte Harrison & Isan Diaz?
(David from Atlantis)
Sure! I filed a report on Guzman last summer, you can find that here: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_bat.php?reportid=263

Wasn't a fan. Would it shock me if he turned into a good hitter with moderate power? No. He was really searching for it when I saw him though. Some pleasant elements to his swing, but I didn't love his physicality and he showed no ability to hold himself together when he tried to turn on balls.

Demeritte I just saw and submitted some notes on, those'll be up this week in one of our "Notes From the Field" pieces. Beras was injured during my first look at High Desert, so have to wait on him.

I haven't seen either Diaz or Harrison in person. Was bummed the former got shipped out last winter like 146 other would've-been-great-to-watch-at-Visalia prospects. James Fisher wrote about him last week, you can find that here: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=28975 (Wilson Karaman)
2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)Recognizing they weren't candidates for this list, how are Nomar Mazara and Ronald Guzman progressing?
(Rob from Alaska)
Mazara is climbing quickly; likely to be a top 101 this off-season. Very good hitter that is likely to explode in the next few seasons. (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2014-05-13 11:00:00 (link to chat)Who has the higher ceiling: Vogelbach or Ronald Guzman?
(Frank from Texas)
Guzzie (Jason Parks)
2014-03-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Looking for young power. Should I stash Ronald Guzman now?
(Silverback38 from VA)
How deep is your league? I'd wait and take someone out of the upcoming draft. (Ronit Shah)
2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Ronald Guzman jumps into the top 100 prospect discussion next year?
(RyanW from Fort Worth)
It;s a tough profile, so the power will have to show up before he jumps into that discussion. I obviously like the bat, but tough value spot. (Jason Parks)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'll go ahead and apologize for the blatant fantasy question, but in a medium-deep keeper league looking for lottery tickets, which one of Gabriel Guerrero, Manuel Margot, Franklin Barreto, Amed Rosario, and Ronald Guzman would you want?
(Rob from Alaska)
You can't really go wrong with any of them if you're looking for lottery tickets. I've been particularly impressed with the reports on Rosario, but my eyes tell me Margot might be the guy I'd put my money on. (Mark Anderson)
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Jason, who do you like more as a prospect? Nick Williams or Ronald Guzman? Thanks!
(Joe from Dallas)
Guzman has a tough profile, as he is already limited to 1B. But I really love his approach to hitting and the ease in which he does it. I've already spoken about my love for Williams as well, especially the bat-to-ball skills. But his overall game is very rudimentary, and he could flame out before bringing it all together. THe more I watch Guzman, the more Freddie Freeman I see in the swing. (Jason Parks)
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you believe Ronald Guzman will develop enough power to be 1st division at 1B?
(mikeyurk from CT)
I do. I'm a big believer in Guzman's offensive upside. (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects)
2013-06-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do Ronald Guzman and Nomar Mazara appear to be living up to their international hype? Are they Top 100 types by the end of the season?
(jaymoff from Salem)
Probably not top 100 types this year, but they have the potential to be down the line. Living up to the hype so far, for me. (Jason Cole)
2013-05-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ronald Guzman had some work on his meniscus, but any report if he's close to returning?
(Sexy Rexy from New York)
He's playing in extended spring training, and should get the promotion to Hickory once its all good to go. Very natural hitter despite having the body of a young power forward. (Jason Parks)
2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat)Still a long way away from top 100 contention, but have you seen Ronald Guzman in person this spring? Are the reports true about him bulking up quite a bit?
(Ryan from Dallas)
He didn't bulk up. He's lanky 18-year-old kid that added some meat to the frame. Its not crazy meat either. He is starting to fill out. It's something I expected to see at some point. He works his ass off. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jairo Beras higher ceiling than Ronald Guzman?
(rangerfans2 from Fort Worth)
He has crazy power, and if you value the promise of power Beras's ceiling is higher than Guzman. I'd still tak Guzman. Yes, he's a 1B prospect and the power can't stand next to the raw coming out of Beras. But I'll take the better hitter every time. (Jason Parks)
2012-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Ronald Guzman will be in the discussion for Top 50 by this time next year?
(Greg36 from Fort Worth)
It might take more time than that, but he has the potential to be in that discussion during his developmental process. (Jason Parks)
