What You Need to Know: Topsy-Turvy Central

3

Ian Frazer

Twins-Red Sox action, a long pitcher dinger, King Felix gets in a duel, and more, plus what to watch today

The Wednesday Takeaway
No division in baseball has so undermined the strategy of spending money to win baseball games as the AL Central. The Tigers, a team that has sold both its soul and farm system for present success, and the White Sox, who went on an eyebrow-raising spending spree themselves during the offseason, currently trail the small-market, offense-light Royals and Twins. After a Kansas City loss and Minnesota win on Wednesday, the two squads are tied atop the division.

What You Need to Know: Bryant vs. Harper

6

Chris Mosch

Not quite as scintillating as Ecks vs. Sever, but what are you going to do? Plus the rest of the action and today's best matchups.

The Tuesday Takeaway
This week's series between the Nationals and Cubs has been promoted as the first time Bryce Harper and Kris Bryant—who both hail from Las Vegas and have emerged as two of the game's brightest stars—have taken the field in opposition. It's always humbling to remember that Bryant is actually the elder of the two young players and makes you appreciate how amazing Harper's career has been so far.

Kansas City fans would have done well to stay home and grill up extra steaks, and the rest of yesterday's action, plus what to watch tonight.

What You Need to Know: Bummed!

2

Daniel Rathman

DeGrom DeGrominates, the surprisingly good Tigers' bullpen is unsurprisingly bad, Bumgarner beats Kershaw again, and the best defensive play of the day.

The Thursday Takeaway
When Jacob deGrom served up three home runs to the Yankees on April 24th, then gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings to the Mets six days later, some wondered if regression or an injury was afoot. A rollercoaster first month isn’t what prognosticators expected from deGrom after his outstanding rookie campaign, but it’s what they got. And so, the cries of “The Yankees broke deGrom!” rang out and wouldn’t die, not even after he struck out nine Orioles in seven innings on May 6th.

What You Need to Know: As Predicted!

7

Daniel Rathman

The Nationals find first place, Randy Choate reaches first base, the Brewers go back-to-back-to-back, and the best defensive play of the day.

The Tuesday Takeaway
Hope springs eternal when teams break camp and head to their respective openers with 0-0 records. Every team, from the heaviest favorites to the longest of long shots, is in first place on the first day of the season.

What You Need to Know: Corey Math

3

Chris Mosch

Kluber, fresh off an 18-K performance, strikes out a dozen; pitchers duels turn into bullpen games, Carlos Gomez bounces back from a pitch to the face, and the best defensive play of the day.

The Monday Takeaway
The last time Corey Kluber took the hill he nearly made history. The Indians ace had 18 strikeouts heading into the ninth inning of last Wednesday’s game against the Cardinals but was pulled after 113 pitches without getting the chance to break the single-game strikeout record. So naturally, Kluber struck out the first five White Sox who took their hacks on Monday.

What You Need to Know: 8 2/3

6

Steven Jacobson

Shelby Miller almost made it, the Cubs keep surging, Michael Pineda's follow-up sucked, and the best defensive play of the weekend.

The Weekend Takeaway
On May 10th, the Cubs had just lost 3-2 to the lowly Brewers, and stood with a 45 percent chance at the playoffs; entering Friday’s contest against the Bucs, they were the winners of five straight and had jacked their playoff odds to 59 percent. In contrast, the Pirates came into Friday having dropped their last two to the Phillies and saw their playoff odds sink by 13 points to 24 percent since the beginning of May.

What You Need to Know: Thwarted!

3

Steven Jacobson

History will not remember Corey Kluber, alas. Also: The A's good bad good back luck, Bryce Harper gets a different kind of hot, and the best defensive play of the day.

What You Need to Know: Hello Noah

1

Chris Mosch

Noah Syndergaard loses to an ace; Giancarlo Stanton has a jack; Strasburg flops; and the best defensive play of the day.

The Tuesday Takeaway
The debut of Noah Syndergaard was highly anticipated largely because the 6-foot-6 right-hander has the type of pedigree that gives him the potential to be one of the better pitchers in baseball down the road. However, Syndergaard is also 22 years old and is far from a finished product, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that the hard-throwing Texan ran into some issues against a talented Cubs lineup on Tuesday. It also shouldn’t come as a surprise that the guy opposite Syndergaard, Jake Arrieta, one-upped the rookie and pitched like a polished front-of-the-rotation starter, given that it’s pretty much what he’s been for the past year.

What You Need to Know: Bombered!

3

Daniel Rathman

Everybody homered. Literally, everybody. Congratulations on your homer.

The Monday Takeaway
For the first month and change of the 2015 season, Carlos Beltran looked every bit of 38, the age he turned on April 24th, two days before his third straight 0-fer sent his OPS plunging below .500. Playing in over 2,000 major-league games had taken a toll on the switch-hitter’s bat speed, and hitting quality fastballs was no longer a picnic, by Beltran’s own admission.
