Value Picks: Starting Pitching Review

1

Paul Sporer

Paul closes out VP's season with his starting pitcher review.

It is review time at Value Picks. Since I wasn’t here writing the starting pitcher VP from the jump, I don’t have any preseason picks to review, so we’ll dive in around late-April when I signed on and break the season up into a few segments.

Value Picks: Relievers Review

0

Dan Mennella

Dan takes a look back at his best and worst bullpen calls this season.

Analyzing fantasy relievers is a strange proposition. I’ve done it for a couple seasons now, and it’s been my experience that no matter how much I think I know, there’s always an interesting plot twist that makes me rethink my understanding of how relievers are handled and how save opportunities are divvied up. It’s an inexact science, to be sure, but that’s what makes it challenging and fun… and sometimes frustrating. In that spirit, here’s a look back at some of my good and bad touts and what we might be able to learn from them with an eye toward 2013.

Paul recaps his best and worst VP picks for the 2012 fantasy season.

After five years of sharing my fantasy baseball thoughts elsewhere on the internet, I was fortunate enough to move my virtual office to BPro in late July. For our purposes today, that leaves us with exactly 10 VP: Outfielder articles to work with. Hopefully in those articles you’ve gotten to know me a little bit, and hopefully I was able to help your rosters. In accordance with fellow mid-season acquisition Josh Shepardson’s format, I’ll categorize my picks into “Duds,” “Contributors,” and “Studs.”

Value Picks: First, Third, and DH Review

1

Michael Street

Michael looks at his best and worst Value Picks for the 2012 season.

As the season winds down, Value Picks takes a fond look back at our picks from the season, looking at the hits and misses we collected in our efforts to find value among the overlooked players on your league’s waiver wire. As with assessing fantasy players, the notion of “value” can be slippery to pin down, especially when looking at players who are largely castoffs from other fantasy squads.

Value Picks: Second, Short, and Catcher Review

4

Josh Shepardson

Josh looks back on his VP picks that panned out and those that floundered in the final VP of the year.

With just over a week left in the season, BP’s Value Picks writers will be taking a look back on the season.  They’ll be looking at the players they hit on, the players they missed on, and what went right or wrong.  Thank you, readers, for your support throughout another great season here at BP. —Derek Carty, Fantasy Manager

Paul gives you his final slate of outfield Value Picks for the homestretch.

Lots of production from the players but not a lot of movement in ownership rates over the past week leads me to one conclusion: people have transitioned their attention over to fantasy football. Worry not; if you’re here, I’m guessing you are still contending for the title or another top spot. And I’m still here to help you get there.

Value Picks: First, Third, and DH for 9/20/12

Value Picks gets the Disney treatment this week as the season winds down to the final week.

This column is coming a few days late since I spent a week with my brother’s family in Orlando—a trip that, of course, included a day at Disney World. Inspired by the visit, I’m giving this week a Disney theme (instead of the other video I introduced my nephews to). After all, sometimes Value Picks makes me feel like WALL-E, sifting through the discards of other teams to find something worth saving. With only a dozen games to play, we’re all hoping to run across the final piece of the puzzle to put us in the money for our fantasy league and make our dreams come true.

Value Picks: Starting Pitching for 9/20/12

Paul Sporer

This week's VP welcomes a host of young pitchers battling for roster spots in 2013.

The season is almost over, you guys! Is everyone as upset by that as me? There is some good news, though. First, we still have the playoffs immediately after the regular season, and they should excellent again this year. Second, we still have a couple weeks left in the regular season, and if you are in the thick of a fantasy pennant chase, these will be extremely fun, tension-filled weeks and give you a chance to over-manage the hell out of your squad. Lastly, even when the games on the field end, the hot stove burns hot enough to make baseball a year-round sport.

Value Picks: Relievers for 9/19/12

0

Dan Mennella

Several bullpens are feeling the effects of a long season, potentially opening up save chances for some unheralded relievers.

Arrivals
The Rangers’ top three relievers—Joe Nathan, Mike Adams and Alexi Ogando—have all gotten some rest over the past week or so. Whether that’s because they’re dinged or because the team is looking to rest its primary assets with an eye toward the postseason (or both), the net effect of stirring some uncertainty from a fantasy perspective is all the same. Nathan was reportedly set to be back for full deployment by Tuesday night, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rangers look to limit his usage over the final couple weeks, and the same goes for Adams and Ogando. Koji Uehara (Yahoo! 2%, ESPN 0%, CBS 1%) picked up a save in their absences over the weekend, and while that may have been the result of a flukey confluence of circumstances, those conditions could very well remain in place over the next two weeks. It’s a long shot but one worth taking if you’re scrambling for that last point or so in saves.

Value Picks: Second, Short, and Catcher for 9/17/12

Josh Shepardson

Jed Lowrie is healthy and Gordon Beckham is hot again, leading to stretch-run VP stints for the pair of middle infielders.

Hanging On
If he played a different position, Manny Machado (Yahoo! 29%, ESPN 38%, CBS 67%) would be an easy departure. Shortstop is a wretched offensive position this year, though, earning Machado a bit more leash as the season winds down. He recorded zero extra base hits this past week but did manage to steal a base. His strikeout rate is down this month, and his line drive rate is up. He has enough thump in the bat to put a charge into the ball, so deep mixed leaguers and AL-only owners should refrain from dumping Machado.

Value Picks: Outfielders for 9/14/12

Paul Singman

Paul gives your fantasy outfield plenty of options in this week's VP as we barrel full-steam down the home-stretch.

No new arrivals this week, but plenty of returning names and lots of speculation in the “Edge of the Radar” section to keep you busy.

Value Picks: Starting Pitching for 9/13/12

0

Paul Sporer

Paul brings three hyped youngsters in Lynn, Cashner, and Straily to VP this week.

Can’t give up now; we are in the homestretch, folks. And this goes for those out of contention even more than for those who are fighting for the title. Obviously we know the incentive of those fighting for the prize, but if you’re a bottom-feeder, keep your roster up to date and make sure you’re putting your best foot forward. You can still impact the race by “showing up” so to speak. There may be a gem or two in this week’s Value Picks that you can use to replace an injured or underperforming arm.
