Graphical Fantasy Rankings: Shortstops

7

Mauricio Rubio

A visual breakdown of the players at this premium position, based on their projected stats for the 2014 season.

The first thing that popped out to me as I was doing this graph was how well rounded Ian Desmond projects to be. Desmond helps out across all five standard categories while dominating none of them. The other thing that pops out is how there are still usable options through the upper portion of the tier-two rankings, and even a guy like Jonathan Villar has his uses down toward the bottom.

Graphical Fantasy Rankings: Second Basemen

14

Mauricio Rubio

A visual breakdown of the tiers at the keystone and the areas in which each player could help or hurt your team.

For a primer on this series, click here.

My colleague Paul Sporer put it best in the opening paragraph of his “State of the Position” column regarding the depth at 2B. No, this is not a sexy position full of robust offensive options and guys who can hit 30 bombs. What the keystone has become in my mind is a position that keeps your team going. The average top-30 2B will hit around .262 with around 10 bombs, 10 SB, 54 R, and 47 RBI. There’s nothing spectacular about that 5x5 line, but what it showcases is a type of positional depth that’s difficult to appreciate.

Graphical Fantasy Rankings: First Basemen

15

Mauricio Rubio

A visual representation of the rankings in the tiered first-base list with a breakdown of the statistical contributions each player is projected to make.

For a primer on the graphical rankings, click here.

First base was an extremely fun position to break down this year. The top offensive producers will come from the cold corner. Miguel Cabrera will move there from third, Joe Mauer and perhaps Buster Posey will enter into transitional phases in their careers at first, and there’s still a host of highly talented incumbents that crowd the rankings quite a bit. Again, these are made to mirror Mike Gianella’s tiered system and aren’t necessarily in a hard order. With that in mind, let’s address some questions about the graphs.

Graphical Fantasy Rankings: Catchers

25

Mauricio Rubio

A visual breakdown of the statistical contributions you can expect from each fantasy catcher in 2014.

I think we all understand that not everyone learns and retains information the same way. I’m a visual learner and it created some difficulty in the majority of my math classes. The first time I sat down and got serious about fantasy baseball and read through rankings, they failed to get through to me in a way that would allow me to retain the information. So, slowly over time, I developed a system to help identify a player’s strengths and weaknesses. I developed a loose tier system that’s been ever evolving, and now I would like to share this information with you.

So, over the next few months we at Baseball Prospectus will be rolling out our comprehensive fantasy baseball package. I was brought on to provide a visual wrinkle to the product in an effort to better communicate the ideas we’re going to be trotting out there for you guys.
