Fantasy Starting Pitcher Planner: Week Five |

Welcome to the Weekly Pitching Planner. Each week I will cover the pitchers are who slated to make two starts and help you decide who you should start and who you should sit. Sometimes guys will be in the “consider” where they might have one good start, but a second tough one and then your league settings might determine whether or not you should go forward with him. The pitchers will be split by league then by categories:
Auto-Starts – These are your surefire fantasy aces. You paid a handsome sum for them either with an early draft pick or high dollar auction bid so you’re starting them anywhere, anytime. Guys can emerge onto or fall off of this list as the season evolves. There won’t be many – if any – notes associated with these groupings each week. We are starting them automatically so why do I need to expound on how awesome they are and will be in the coming week?

Getting nervous about the ace pitchers who are off to poor starts? Paul explains why, at least for four of them, you shouldn't be.
Three weeks ago, I issued a general message of extreme patience with early-season numbers that are sure to anger and frustrate when they don’t go as expected (WHY CAN’T ALL OF MY GUYS HAVE A 0.50 ERA ALREADY?????). I spoke about some April strugglers from last year and. well, you can look at it via that link if you didn’t catch it the first time. The thing about patience is that it requires repetition of message and upkeep especially now that we have 20-25 innings of work to freak out over, so today, I’m going to talk you off the ledge on some specific pitchers about whom you shouldn’t be worried one bit.

Fantasy Beat: Hisashi Iwakuma and Better Stats |
What can Hisashi Iwakuma's early season work teach us about using the most effective stats available?
Hisashi Iwakuma had the odd occurrence in his 2012 season where he was actually better as a starter. Most pitchers are not only better in short bursts out of the bullpen, but markedly so. Iwakuma spent 30 1/3 in the bullpen pitching to a 4.75 ERA and 1.42 WHIP with an 18 percent strikeout rate and 12 percent walk rate. He took off once he become a starter, posting a 2.65 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 95 innings with a 20 percent strikeout rate and seven percent walk rate.
His 2013 season is off to an even better start as he has managed a 1.69 ERA and 0.53 WHIP in 26 2/3 innings through his first four starts. The only impediment to his success so far has been a blister issue, though something tells me his 100 percent left on base rate and .119 BABIP are set to rise. I have noticed that his batted ball mix is different from 2012 as his flyball rate climbed dramatically from 27 percent to 42 percent, including a 13 percent infield flyball rate.

Fantasy Beat: Down Goes Donaldson |
Rick Porcello takes out Oakland's Josh Donaldson with one of the dirtiest curves you'll ever see.
Rick Porcello made a cameo in the bullpen on Sunday afternoon and though it came in the final two innings of a 10-1 blowout to clinch a series win in Oakland, it was still quite memorable. I’ve seen guys flinch at pitches before, but this is a whole new level of knee-bucklage. Josh Donaldson will no doubt be seeing this replay in his nightmares. I wouldn’t be surprised if his teammates run it on an endless loop in the clubhouse for the next few days months.

Fantasy Freestyle: My American League Portfolio |
Paul shares the team-by-team count of players on his AL-only and mixed-league teams, with the Royals leading the way.
I remember the days of being in just one fantasy baseball league. They were long ago; I was 12 years old and finally getting ready to take the reins of a team in the only fantasy league I ever knew: my mom and dad’s 10-team 4x4 AL Only league. It started in 1989 at my dad’s work with co-workers and a pair of wives (his and the commissioner’s… and don’t sleep on the ladies, they won five titles in the first decade of the league). The league has evolved since then, but it still exists, with me installed as commissioner and several of my friends filling out the remaining seven teams not already taken by me and my parents.
There was something kind of great about the one-league days. Having just the one team gives you a special connection to that roster of players, especially your keepers, if you have a base that was in place for several years. As I got older and realized how much I loved this game, I began to branch out. I don’t think I’ve been a one-league guy since age 16. Despite the charms of being in just one league, I take plenty of joy in participating across many leagues with their various formats, team counts, and player pools used.
