Fantasy Fallout

12

Paul Singman

Monday's trade could impact far more players than just the five who changed uniforms.

Yesterday’s trade, which sent Jed Lowrie and Fernando Rodriguez to the Athletics for Chris Carter, Brad Peacock, and Max Stassi, may seem relatively unimportant from a fantasy standpoint, but there are ripple effects that could impact numerous players on both the A’s and the Astros. Below, I examine the fallout for all of the players affected by the deal.

Paul breaks down the 2013 potential of Carlos Beltran, Jay Bruce, and Shin-Soo Choo.

The Keeper Reaper: Outfielders for 1/25/13

Paul examines how the speed of Angel Pagan and the power of Michael Morse and Chris Davis stack up to the keeper competition.

Angel Pagan | San Francisco Giants
Shallow (30 Keepers): No
Medium (60 Keepers): No
Deep (90 Keepers): No
NL-only (60 Keepers): Fringe
Super Deep (200 Keepers): Yes

We’re nearing the start of February, which means the fantasy baseball community is starting to ramp up its efforts to prepare for the 2013 season. For its part, a group of industry writers, including our own Derek Carty and Jason Collette, are taking part in a “slow” mock draft, the results of which can be viewed here at David Gonos’ website. I’ve been following the draft the past few days, and one pick that stood out was Derek’s selection of Angel Pagan towards the back-end of round eight at number 116 overall. In a mock draft I participated in a couple of weeks ago, Pagan went much later (no. 170), and he is generally ranked lower than some of the outfielders Derek passed on to take him. Curious, I decided to take a closer look at Pagan.

Speedy mid-tier outfielders are on this week's Reaper menu.

Ben Revere | Philadelphia Phillies
Shallow (30 Keepers):
No
Medium (60 Keepers): No
Deep (90 Keepers): No
NL-only (60 Keepers): Yes
Super Deep (200 Keepers): Yes

As a fantasy asset, it’s quite clear where Revere will help your team and where he won’t. The young, speedy centerfielder can provide runs, hits, and steals in bunches but won’t offer much in the way of RBIs or homers. In fact, in just over 1,000 major league trips to the plate, Revere has yet to hit a single home run, though he did once come oh-so-close to the inside-the-park variety.

The Keeper Reaper: Outfielders for 1/11/13

Rios, Ross, and Cuddyer highlight this week's Keeper list.

Alex Rios | Chicago White Sox
Shallow (30 Keepers):
No
Medium (60 Keepers): No
Deep (90 Keepers): Yes
AL-only (60 Keepers): Yes
Super Deep (200 Keepers): Yes

While Adam Dunn was struggling through his historically bad 2011 season on the White Sox, teammate Alex Rios was putting together a fairly disastrous season of his own. Overall, he batted .227 with just 13 homers and 11 steals—a far cry from the 21 homers and 34 steals of the year prior. Many fantasy owners gave up on him as a result, but Rios wasn’t done yet, rebounding to hit .304 with 25 home runs and 23 steals in 2012. Add in just over 90 runs and RBI and you get the 12th most valuable line as ranked by our PFM.

Injury disappointments Jacoby Ellsbury and Jayson Werth highlight this week's Reaper.

Jacoby Ellsbury | Boston Red Sox
Shallow (30 Keepers):
Fringe
Medium (60 Keepers): Yes
Deep (90 Keepers): Yes
AL-only (60 Keepers): Yes
Super Deep (200 Keepers): Yes

Ellsbury followed up his monstrous 2011 season with a shoulder-subluxed and ineffective 2012 that burned those expecting a repeat. All told, he played 74 games, batted .271, hit four homers, and stole 14 bags. Now that the price has come way down, a healthy Ellsbury is an intriguing asset for 2013.

The Keeper Reaper: Outfielders for 12/28/12

How worthy of your keeper slots are Jason Kubel, Corey Hart, and Coco Crisp?

Jason Kubel | Arizona Diamondbacks
Shallow (30 Keepers):
No
Medium (60 Keepers): No
Deep (90 Keepers): No
NL-only (60 Keepers): No
Super Deep (200 Keepers): Yes

Owning Jason Kubel last year was a lot like being the aptly named (since this is a baseball article) Tom Hanson from 500 Days of Summer. If you jump between different days of his season, one day you’re running gleefully through IKEA but on the next you discover the sink is broken, all your sinks are broken. Moving from plumbing back to baseball, for Kubel this means his season was very bipolar. The week of July 15 he was the hottest hitter in the game while swatting five homers, yet in August and September he couldn’t manage to hit above .200.

2012 surprise Aoki joins an on-the-move Hunter and Victorino in this week's Reaper.

Norichika Aoki | Milwaukee Brewers
Shallow (30 Keepers): No
Medium (60 Keepers): No
Deep (90 Keepers): No
NL-only (60 Keepers): Yes
Super Deep (200 Keepers): Yes

In his first MLB season, the 30-year-old Aoki surprised almost everyone with 10 homers, 30 steals, and a .290 average. His end-of-year line was rated 90th overall by our PFM, turning a nice profit for those who invested a buck or late-round pick to own him. Despite being expected to fill a fourth outfielder role for Milwaukee when signed, Aoki managed to carve out 588 plate appearances for himself with his productive play. Beyond normal aging concerns for any player past 30 though, there is reason to be skeptical that Aoki can retain his top 100 status for next year.

The Keeper Reaper: Outfielders for 12/14/12

Cespedes, Reddick, A-Jax, and Granderson make up Paul's first batch of keeper candidates.

Yoenis Cespedes | Oakland A’s
Shallow (30 Keepers):
No
Medium (60 Keepers): Yes
Deep (90 Keepers): Yes
AL-only (60 Keepers): Yes
Super Deep (200 Keepers): Yes

Cespedes, Oakland’s big free-agent splash of last offseason, debuted in the spring to a multitude of swirling questions. Would his Cuban League stats translate to the majors? Does his viral training video of him doing four-foot squat jumps substantiate his baseball abilities? Is he really the perfect combination of speed and power? Fairly early into the season it became clear that the answer to all of these questions was, indeed, yes. By the end of April, he was batting .250 and had already tallied five homers and four steals, proving himself a valuable fantasy asset.

Paul recaps his best and worst VP picks for the 2012 fantasy season.

After five years of sharing my fantasy baseball thoughts elsewhere on the internet, I was fortunate enough to move my virtual office to BPro in late July. For our purposes today, that leaves us with exactly 10 VP: Outfielder articles to work with. Hopefully in those articles you’ve gotten to know me a little bit, and hopefully I was able to help your rosters. In accordance with fellow mid-season acquisition Josh Shepardson’s format, I’ll categorize my picks into “Duds,” “Contributors,” and “Studs.”

Paul gives you his final slate of outfield Value Picks for the homestretch.

Lots of production from the players but not a lot of movement in ownership rates over the past week leads me to one conclusion: people have transitioned their attention over to fantasy football. Worry not; if you’re here, I’m guessing you are still contending for the title or another top spot. And I’m still here to help you get there.

Value Picks: Outfielders for 9/14/12

Paul Singman

Paul gives your fantasy outfield plenty of options in this week's VP as we barrel full-steam down the home-stretch.

No new arrivals this week, but plenty of returning names and lots of speculation in the “Edge of the Radar” section to keep you busy.
