Notes from the Field: Last Looks From Arizona
by
Mauricio Rubio

<< Previous Author Entries No More Author Entries

No one will forget Jose Fernandez, on or off the field.

There is a traditional Mexican folk song whose roots and history are woven deep into the Mexican culture and consciousness. It is a macabre song describing the wishes one person is leaving to another regarding how they want to be remembered in death. La Martiniana’s famous line is the following:

“No me llores, no, no me llores, no,
Porque si lloras yo peno,
En cambio si tú me cantas
Yo siempre vivo, yo nunca muero.”

Which roughly translates to:

“Don't cry for me, no, don't cry for me, no
Because if you cry, I will suffer
Instead, if you sing songs of my life
I will live forever and never die.”

Let me sing you the song of Jose Fernandez.

The Call-Up: A Triplet of Padres

2

Christopher Crawford, Mauricio Rubio and Greg Wellemeyer

A breakdown of Hunter Renfroe, Manuel Margot, and Carlos Asuaje.

The Situation: With El Paso wrapping up a championship season, the Padres have called up three of their top prospects to get a taste of the majors.

Hunter Renfroe
Scouting Report: Renfroe was the Padres first-round pick out of Mississippi State in 2013, and though there have been some peaks and valleys, for the most part he's looked the part of one of the best corner outfield prospects in baseball. The weakest tool at his disposal is likely the hit: he's an aggressive hitter with some length to his swing, and you can mark him down for some 100-plus strikeout seasons if he's a regular. That being said, he does have quality bat speed, and he will go the other way, so a 50—or possibly even a tick above—grade isn't out of the question. There's no question about his power, as there's natural loft in his right-handed stroke, and he is strong enough to take the ball out to any part of the park. Even in Petco Park, 25-30 homer seasons are not out of the realm of possibility, if he sees enough quality pitches to allow that to happen.

Prospect House: High Ceilings, Low Floors, Big Rooms

A look at five pitchers who carry significant upside, but comparable risk.

We’ve seen a slew of promotions via September call ups this year. It’s depleted the upper minors quite a bit but there are still some interesting prospects coming up the pipeline. This will be a two-part series examining players who have ceilings and floors that are pretty far apart for a variety of reasons, be it health, age or profile. This week we will look at five pitchers with serious upside and risk:

Prospect House: Kyle Tucker and Projecting Power

Why being early can be a good thing... [glares] millennials.

I love being early. It’s a character trait that was instilled in me early, my father always told me you never want to leave anyone waiting for you, especially if it’s for something important. While there are some downsides, such as being the guy trying to leave while everyone else is getting ready, there are some positives too. Namely showing up early to baseball games, in time to catch batting practice.

Prospect House: Isan Diaz is a Monster

13

Mauricio Rubio

Sasquatch, Godzilla, King Kong Lochness, Goblin, Ghoul, a zombie with no conscience...

I recieved a simple one-line text as my initial exposure to the Milwaukee Brewers Isan Diaz. It was towards the end of the 2015 season, before the trades that sent Dansby Swanson to Atlanta and Isan Diaz to Milwaukee. Both players were still in the Arizona Diamondbacks system whose Low-A affiliate is my home team. I was doing background work on players to watch for in the coming years and the text I received on Diaz simply said “heard he’s a monster.”

Minor League Update: Arizona Fall League Games of October 14th

4

Mauricio Rubio

Notes on prospects who stood out yesterday, including Mariners first baseman D.J. Peterson and A's lefty Sean Manaea.

Hitter of the Day: D.J. Peterson, 1B, Seattle Mariners (Peoria Javelinas) 2-4, 2 HR

Peterson is following up a disappointing 2015 MiLB regular season with a strong start out of the gate in the AFL. That's important for the once-polished third-base prospect as he's essentially moved across the infield, and his bat will have to play up to expectations at first. Peterson's early performance offers hope that he can tap into his power and have a strong bounce-back year in 2016.
