On the Beat: The Optimistic Disastros |
They might be on a historically bad pace, but the Astros are optimistic about 2013. Our beat man also checks in on Matt Garza, the AL Central, Carlos Ruiz, and with scouts.
Bo Porter is enthusiastic, optimistic, and energetic. Very enthusiastic, optimistic, and energetic. In fact, the first-year Astros manager possesses so much of those three qualities that he believes that his team is not nearly as bad as its record says it is and it won’t be as historically bad as some analysts have predicted.

On the Beat: The Most Improved Players |
Jean Segura and Michael Saunders both could challenge for a Most Improved Player award. Our beat reporter also checks in with Bryce Harper, Carlos Zambrano, Rick Ankiel, Philip Humber, and scouts.
It’s too bad for Jean Segara that there isn’t an award for the Most Improved Player in the major leagues. The Brewers shortstop would be the early favorite. However, Segura is at least going to be able to settle for a spot on the National League team in the All-Star Game with the way he has played his first 37 games.

On the Beat: No-Hitting Nationals |
The Nationals' offense is off to a sluggish start. Our beat reporter also checks in with the potential use of pitcher helmets, Roy Halladay, and scouts' takes.
Davey Johnson doesn’t believe in team meetings. The 70-year-old Nationals manager is old school in that regard, preferring to informally chat with the players on his team when he needs to communicate a message. However, Johnson felt the urge to call a team meeting last weekend with his Nationals standing at 15-15 after 30 games, a far cry from where they were expected to be after winning 98 games last season, more than any team in the major leagues. Johnson’s message was simply to tell his players to relax.

On the Beat: Minnesota Mediocrity |
The Twins might have a mediocre record, but it's an upgrade from 2012. Our beat reporter also checks in on whether major leaguers would accept a gay teammate, the Phillies, Stephen Strasburg, and returns with scouting reports.
The Twins are 12-12 one game into May. While .500 may seem to be the epitome of mediocrity to some, after finishing the last two seasons at 66-96 and 69-93, respectively, the Twins will take it.

On the Beat: Up, Up, Upton and Away |
The Braves are thriving thanks to Justin Upton. Our beat reporter also catches up with the Tigers, Albert Pujols, and the Rockies.
The Braves have the best record in the major leagues at 15-6. However, manager Fredi Gonzalez is quick to say his team could be better. Not necessarily have a better record—a .714 winning percentage is hard to beat, mind you—but playing better overall baseball.

On the Beat: Choo-sing to Look on the Sunny Side |
The Reds have battled injuries early on, but some scouts think the 2013 squad might be better than the 2012 team. Our beat man also checks in on Yovani Gallardo, the Blue Jays, Ubaldo Jimenez, and the Red Sox.
Manager Dusty Baker isn’t ready to say this year’s edition of the Reds is better than the team that won the National League Central last year. That is understandable, considering that ace pitcher Johnny Cueto, cleanup hitter and left fielder Ryan Ludwick, and top left-handed set-up reliever Sean Marshall are on the disabled list.

On the Beat: Who Said You Can't Go Home? |
Terry Francona is happy to be near his home while managing the Cleveland Indians. Our beat reporter also checks in on Jered Weaver, closers, and Will Middlebrooks.
The ceremonial first pitch at the Indians’ home opener might have seemed a bit schmaltzy on the surface, with the fathers of manager Terry Francona, bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr., right-hander Zach McAllister, first baseman Nick Swisher, and left fielder Michael “Dr. Smooth” Brantley making pitches to their sons. The only thing missing was James Earl Jones intoning, “build it and they will come.”

On the Beat: Contractual Matters |
Our resident beat reporter hears both the pros and cons of recent contract extensions and catches up on Robinson Cano and the Cubs.
Not every player in the major leagues received a contract extension in the final days of spring training. It just seemed that way.

On the Beat: Great Expectations |
The Dodgers expect to compete for the World Series, Zack Greinke discusses sabermetrics, the Yankees get Vernon Wells, Kyle Lohse gets a job, and the Cardinals have a rash of bad luck.
Chad Billingsley, then an 18-year-old kid from the small town of Defiance, Ohio who was far away from home in Vero Beach, Florida, hung on every word his coaches and instructors spoke as the members of the Dodgers’ 2003 draft class prepared to begin their professional baseball careers. They talked about the pride of wearing Dodger blue, the tradition of one of the most-recognized franchises in professional sports, and how players who wore the Dodgers uniform were supposed to carry themselves just a little bit differently than those in other organizations.

On the Beat: Sights of Spring |
BP's resident beat writer runs through observations from the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues, the World Baseball Classic, and touches base on the Reds and Braves.
After spending the past month in Florida, Arizona, and at the World Baseball Classic championship round in San Francisco, I’ve made plenty of observations:

On the Beat: One Giant Leap for the Roster |
The Giants have kept most of their championship roster together, and notes on Roy Halladay, Bryce Harper, Scott Kazmir, Carlos Gomez, and Christian Yelich.
If one thing can be said about the Giants—other than they have won two of the last three World Series, which is saying a lot—it is they are big believers in stability. General manager Brian Sabean is in his 17th season, giving him the longest tenure of any current GM. Bruce Bochy is in his ninth season as manager. Even the clubhouse manager, Mike Murphy, has been with the team since the Giants moved west to San Francisco from New York prior to the 1958 season.

On the Beat: Fighting for Béisbol Prominence |
Team Spain faces an uphill battle in raising baseball awareness in Europe, and keeping up with Yoenis Cespedes, Brian Roberts, the Cardinals' shortstop situation, and more.
Let’s not kid ourselves. The biggest reason for holding the World Baseball Classic is to generate more interest in Major League Baseball internationally, which means more merchandise sold on MLB.com and more MLB.tv subscriptions purchased. When it comes to MLB, like all professional sports, it is about creating more revenue streams.
