News and notes from around the minor leagues.

To The DL
Reds placed Cuban RHP Vladimir Gutierrez on the DL. He features a sinker in the 88-93 mph range with fringe-average movement. His secondary offerings are led by his big 11-5 curveball that projects to be fringe-average. His slider needs improvement coming out soft from the hand, but his changeup needs more work, as it is presently well-below average. As for the delivery, it is not efficient as he occasionally over rotates. Take this with a grain of salt, however, because this information stems from his last outing before landing on the DL. He could have been pitching hurt.

Pirates placed LHP Taylor Hearn on the DL with a strained right oblique. I missed Hearn here in Southeast Florida, but you can read Steve Givarz’s report here. Hearn, six-foot-five and lean, has the potential to close. On the same High-A team, Mitch Keller left the game after being struck on the shin with a line drive. The positive from this game is that he was straight fire, hitting 101 mph according to our own Josh Turner. He recently came off the DL for his back issue. No word on the severity of this potential injury.

A slew of promotions for Cardinals, Dodgers and Padres prospects, amongst other news.

To The DL
Orioles placed OF Cedric Mullins on the DL with a hamstring, the second time this season he has tweaked it. He is a speedy center fielder who has been able to pair speed with a .543 slugging percentage and is hitting .318 in Double-A. He’s only gone 5-9 in stolen bases this year, likely the result of his nagging hamstring injury.

Though yesterday was a good day for the Chicago White Sox, RHP Zack Burdi was not celebrating as he was placed on the DL. In 33 1/3 innings of work, the 22-year-old has struck out 51 batters to 17 walks to a 1.42 DRA in Triple-A. He is the brother of Twins RHP Nick Burdi, who is out for a while with TJS.

To The DL

Yankees placed 2015 30th-overall pick SS Kyle Holder on the DL with an undisclosed injury. With a silky smooth glove and actions, he can stick at short gracefully. However his bat and power are easy 30s; projecting him to be an emergency utility infielder.

Promotions for Erick Fedde, AJ Puk, Kyle Lewis and more.

Let me start you with a rather significant move. Not pertaining to a TOP PROSPECT, but one that caught my eye for its international significance: the Phillies assigned LHP Anton Mikhailovich Kuznetsov to the GCL Phillies from the DSL Phillies. It’s no surprise, the 19-year-old hails from Moscow, Russia, and was signed this offseason. A move like this is often a political move—no, no one in the Phillies org is trying to get elected in Russia. Rather, it is an easy negotiation icebreaker for the next Russian baseball player. For example, when the next bidding war for a Russian talent comes…if that ever happens…the Phils can say, “Hey! We signed Kuznetsov back in 2016…So clearly, we believe in the Russian talent. Can you at least give us a consideration?” Kuznetsov may one day achieve many baseball milestone, but for guys like me, Steve Givarz, and others, he isn’t going to be something more than a novelty until he cracks 90 mph. If you do a quick Google search and you find this: a recording of an indoor bullpen session, and here’s a side view. Things I like so far, aside from a lefty throwing a white spherical object from a dwarf-sized mound: his shameless Call-My-Agent shirt.

Welcome to Clearwater, Florida, Kuznetsov!

The ups, downs, and shutdowns from this week in the minors.

To The DL

Blue Jays 2016 first-rounder T.J. Zeuch landed on the disabled list with an undisclosed injury, retroactive to June 3. With a super-sinker, Zeuch is the owner of the second-best ground-ball rate in High-A and the sixth-best in all of minor-league baseball at 61.1 percent. He has pitched well over 53 innings, accumulating 42 strikeouts and 14 walks with a 3.23 ERA, 3.29 FIP, and 1.32 WHIP. Remember, ground-ball pitchers tend to have higher a WHIP and FIP since ground balls are likely to roll through for hits than fly balls.

News and notes from around the minor leagues.

To the DL

Atlanta Braves C Alex Jackson was recently placed on the DL for an undisclosed injury. Jackson is in his first year for the Braves, after being acquired this past offseason. Similarly, this is also his first year catching. He is tied for second in home runs with Cincinnati’s Gavin LaValley in the pitcher friendly Florida State League with 10, behind leader Logan Hill whom has 13. Hill plays for the Pirates’s affiliate Bradenton Marauders.
