Parsing some of our outlier votes.

As you might know, voting for the Greg Spira Memorial Internet Baseball Awards is well underway, and because I’m special, I have access to a tally of the votes submitted so far. There are two running counts: Those of BP’s readership and those of BP’s staff. The second cohort should be more educated, right? It should have the most rational, defensible votes, should it not?

The Internet, I’d argue, is an important part of today’s society.

My day job involves covering college football, and during a game I was covering today the Angels pulled that wacky comeback over the Rangers. Of course, I could only follow via my Twitter. It kind of felt like every Sunday, when I'm usually watching some day game and everybody's tweeting about the NFL. I've got to get paid, though!

The AL West and NL Central come closer to resolution.

The Monday Takeaways
All things considered, the Cardinals have had a truly extraordinary season. They've won a ton, but they've won a ton while fighting through a number of significant injuries. Adam Wainwright, Matt Holliday, Jon Jay, Yadier Molina, Randal Grichuk … it's utterly insane that this team is going to win 100 games.

The Cardinals have been able to overcome these injuries and keep winning because the guys they call on to provide replacement-level production haven't performed like replacements. Stephen Piscotty is one of those: The Stanford alumnus has hit .310 in 62 games with a .502 slugging percentage. His 55 strikeouts to 20 walks and .379 BABIP hint at some overachievement, but that doesn't make his hits count any less.

Field Generals: Predicting the Managers of the Year

Ian Frazer

Hey Lloyd, hope you're ready to be heartbroken.

A good major-league manager is, generally, one who wins. Managing, as with coaching in general, is probably the least empirically quantifiable part of baseball, because it’s about relationships. No cognitive scientist has stepped forward to propose Relationships Above Replacement. (Ahem, Russell?)

The Cubs and Cardinals played beanball this weekend; the rest of the league played baseball. Read about it all here!

The Weekend Takeaways
The Cubs and the Cardinals are rivals, apparently. It can be a tough to remember something like that, especially given how far apart the teams were success-wise the last decade, but now that they're both good (and sustainably so), tensions between the teams have mounted again.

Let's get the shenanigans out of the way first. On Friday, Dan Haren bonked Matt Holliday in the head with a pitch. The maliciousness of this event seems questionable at best, because it was Holliday's first at-bat of the game—he was pinch-hitting for Tyler Lyons—and because Haren bent down after delivering the pitch, presumably in regret.

The revenge of the links!

I've been trying to type better lately, and I've learned that correcting habits I've followed very regularly for a very long time is very hard! Like, my pinkie finger is almost totally useless. It should be in charge of punctuation marks, like putting a colon there or a semicolon there or quotation marks there, but mostly it just flails randomly when pushed into action. It eventually gets the right key, but only after three or four tries. Also, for some reason I've had the habit of reaching across to press "Y" with my left index finger. That should be my right index finger's job, and I constantly find myself correcting that error.

Division titles are on the line

The Monday Takeaways
Twice on Monday night the Astros had the lead, with a chance to extend their advantage in the AL West over the Rangers, and twice the Rangers hit timely, downright cinematic home runs to take the lead. The Arlingtonians marched to an eventual 5-3 win.

The scoring in the game was back and forth the entire way. Jose Altuve opened things up with a solo home run off Cole Hamels in the first. Rougned Odor doubled Prince Fielder home in the second. George Springer drove Jake Marisnick home on a fielder's choice in the fifth, with Marisnick very narrowly beating the throw from first baseman Mitch Moreland. Moreland was of little fault in that exchange—it would have been a close play in any situation, and Marisnick moves well—but he got himself out of the nonexistent doghouse in the bottom of the sixth. After fouling off a first-pitch fastball from Scott Kazmir, he took another swing at the same pitch and put it into the left-field bleachers to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead.
