Jose Quintana is still on the block, Luis Valbuena is hurt, and the WBC is thriving.

Quintana rumors drag on

One of the longest-enduring storylines of the offseason has been the White Sox and the saga surrounding left-hander Jose Quintana. He’s been at the center of trade rumors for months, and while there was a bit of a lull when spring training started that doesn’t mean that things have completely died down when it comes to trade talks.

Adrian Gonzalez is upset with the WBC, Scott Boras is upset with the Blue Jays, and Yasmany Tomas is injured.

Boras unhappy with Blue Jays' handling of Sanchez

Fortunately for Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez, he appears to be in good shape and should be healthy for the start of season. However, he won’t be receiving a significant pay raise. While nobody’s going to argue that he should’ve been getting paid on the same level as Mookie Betts and Kris Bryant, it’d be fair to say that he could be in line for a raise in pay after he had an eye-opening first full season for the Blue Jays that included winning the ERA title.

Kris Bryant gets a big raise from the Cubs, and the Tigers and Braves go in search of outfield help.

Bryant breaks Trout's record

Last week, the Red Sox gave Mookie Betts a 2017 contract worth $950,000. While the runner-up in the AL MVP voting came just short of Mike Trout’s record $1 million pre-arbitration contract renewal back in 2014, the NL MVP winner ended up breaking Trout’s record this week. Jon Heyman is reporting that Kris Bryant will be paid $1.05 million by the Cubs for the 2017 season, which is now the new record for pre-arbitration salary.

Texas talks extension with Rougned Odor, Jason Marquis eyes a comeback, and Jake Peavy puts baseball on hold.

Rangers, Odor can smell extension

Last summer, the Rangers and Rougned Odor both approached the negotiating table to talk about a contract extension, but the talks reportedly stalled when the Rangers offered him $35 million over six years. That’s “Gregory Polanco” money, but it appears that the Rangers have decided it’s time to give Odor “Jason Kipnis” money, since Jon Heyman is reporting that Texas has offered the second baseman a six-year deal around $52.5 million.

Things are never easy with Jeffrey Loria, Matt Wieters may have a fit in Tampa Bay, and all of that runner-on-second rule change talk was for nothing.

Potential Marlins sale up in the air

Marlins fans may be done with Jeffrey Loria and Chase Utley may be going from Los Angeles to Cleveland.

Loria may have billion-dollar deal to sell Marlins

Earlier in the offseason, Mike Ozanian of Forbes reported that Jeffrey Loria was trying to sell the Marlins for somewhere around $1.7 billion. He noted that Loria was just floating the number out there and expressed a bit of skepticism that this could actually happen given that Forbes had valued the Marlins as being worth $675 million, the second-least valuable team in baseball. So it really seemed like this was just another case of Loria doing something weird with the Marlins again.

Jose Quintana is still available and Jerry Blevins' return to New York may depend on Juan Lagares' departure.

White Sox pit Texas teams against each other for Quintana

Apparently, the baseball world couldn’t go much longer without some Jose Quintana trade rumors. Things must have been too quiet on that particular front, because there were rumblings originating from Bob Nightengale that the Rangers are stepping up their pursuit of the top man in the White Sox’s rotation. However, the rumor appeared to die about as quickly as it came to life when Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reported that he hadn’t heard anything recently about the Rangers approaching Chicago about Quintana.

Houston wants rotation help, Minnesota wants veterans, and Canada wants to turn back the clock.

Astros in the hunt for starters

If what Bob Nightengale of USA Today said on Twitter is true, the Astros are shooting for the stars with their latest targets in trade talks. The rumor is that Houston is in the market for a high-end starter, so they’re trying to bring in one of either Jose Quintana, Chris Archer, or Sonny Gray.

New York may keep Curtis Granderson, Baltimore is unlikely to keep Mark Trumbo, and Matt Wieters is looking for a deal.

Mets may hold onto Granderson

Earlier this week there were rumors that the Mets were trying to find a solution to their outfield situation, which is awfully crowded. One of the players mentioned in that piece who could’ve potentially been traded was Curtis Granderson. However, if Sandy Alderson’s comments to ESPN’s Adam Rubin are any indication, it appears as if the Mets are feeling a bit hesitant to trade Granderson away.

Tyson Ross has suitors, Oakland likes Mark Trumbo, and the White Sox are asking a lot for Jose Quintana.

Teams are showing interest in Ross

Tyson Ross missed nearly the entire 2016 season due to injury and was released by the Padres last month, but that hasn’t kept teams from pursuing him as a free agent. There are reports that the Nationals, Mariners, Pirates, Twins, and Giants have shown varying degrees of interest in the 30-year-old right-hander, and Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports tweeted out that the Cubs and Rangers are currently the favorites to sign him.
