Throughout the 2014 playoffs, you'll get a free copy of the Dollar Sign on the Muscle e-book when you buy a yearly Premium subscription.

It's coming up on a year since the Baseball Prospectus edition of Kevin Kerrane's classic book on scouting, Dollar Sign on the Muscle, was released. We predicted around that time that Dollar Sign would become our best-selling self-published book.

We've changed the scoring system for the HACKING MASS contest.

It's been a few years since we last ran a HACKING MASS contest, and we're excited to see all the enthusiasm for the concept out there... despite our late announcement of the contest this year, over 800 teams have already been created. I heard from BP co-founder Rany Jazayerli last week, and based on his recommendation, we made a scoring rules change. While we already updated the original announcement with the details, I wanted to post separately about this to make sure you're aware of the change, so you have time to make any adjustments to your HACKING MASS roster before Monday, April 14, at midnight PST.

Here's Rany:

We're putting the finishing touches on the package. Look for Dollar Sign on the Muscle in paperback and e-book on November 7.

We had a fumbled exchange with the printer on our last proof run of Dollar Sign on the Muscle, and it has put us back a week in production. The Dollar Sign on the Muscle paperback and e-book will be available on November 7, 2013. The good news is we've been able to use the time to continue to improve the book inside and out, and I'm confident this is the cleanest and best edition of Dollar Sign ever to see the light of print. Here's all the info from the Dollar Sign newswire:

The legendary book on baseball scouting returns to print in late October.

I'm happy to announce that Dollar Sign on the Muscle will be available in e-book and paperback formats in late October.

Dollar Sign on the Muscle is Kevin Kerrane's groundbreaking book on the world of baseball scouting. Long out of print and available only for a lot of money in the secondary market, Dollar Sign was named one of the 100 Best Sports Books of All Time by Sports Illustrated. For the Baseball Prospectus edition, Kerrane spent much of 2013 visiting ballparks and talking to scouts, assaying the changes in the scouting landscape. He covers his findings in a wide-ranging, brand-new chapter of the book. You'll also find extensive updates to the whereabouts of the important characters from the original Dollar Sign, and a Foreword by Houston Astros Pro Scouting Coordinator Kevin Goldstein.

More info about the new contest banner you'll see across the Baseball Prospectus site.

You'll notice a new banner across Baseball Prospectus pages today. We've partnered with the good people at Lockerdome to create the Baseball Prospectus Network, where you'll find a whole bunch of information from all the various Baseball Prospectus feeds and social networks. To celebrate, we're running a contest throughout June where you can win a $150 MLB.com gift certificate, a year of MLB.TV Premium, or a Baseball Prospectus Premium subscription. You can read all the details on the contest page. Have a look today, and we hope you enjoy!

Our first prospect guide is now available as an e-book and paperback. Here's what you need to know.

UPDATE 05-11: We're happy to announce that the paperback edition of the BP Futures Guide 2013 is now available from amazon.com. My copy smells like toner and looks like this:

The groundbreaking book about the world of baseball scouting returns to print this year.

It started with Sam Miller's blog post Names of Baseball Men as Recorded In Dollar Sign On The Muscle, published earlier this month. For years, I've been wanting to get my hands on a copy of Dollar Sign On The Muscle, Kevin Kerrane's seminal 1984 book about the world of baseball scouting, which was named one of the five best baseball books by the The Wall Street Journal. My partners and friends at Baseball Prospectus have long said nothing but good things about it while lamenting how difficult it was to obtain, as Ben Lindbergh did last April. The book was long out of print, the secondary market was a little hot for my pocketbook, and I'm a chronic underutilizer of the library system (which was often short of copies itself, depending on the area).

But after the most recent wave of positive comments about the book that Sam's blog post inspired, rather than mope over the secondary market listings one more time, I decided to investigate why a book that sells for $50 used has been out of print for so long. Through the magic of the Internets, we were able to get in touch with author Kevin Kerrane, and I'm happy to announce that Prospectus Entertainment Ventures has reached an agreement with Kerrane to bring a revised, updated edition of Dollar Sign on the Muscle to bookshelves, e-readers, and computers everywhere in 2013. We'll have more news about its availability, as well as more background on the book, in the coming weeks. But for now, we hope you'll be as excited about the new edition's impending arrival as we are.
