Baseball Prospectus News: Dollar Sign On The Muscle Rides Again |
The groundbreaking book about the world of baseball scouting returns to print this year.
It started with Sam Miller's blog post Names of Baseball Men as Recorded In Dollar Sign On The Muscle, published earlier this month. For years, I've been wanting to get my hands on a copy of Dollar Sign On The Muscle, Kevin Kerrane's seminal 1984 book about the world of baseball scouting, which was named one of the five best baseball books by the The Wall Street Journal. My partners and friends at Baseball Prospectus have long said nothing but good things about it while lamenting how difficult it was to obtain, as Ben Lindbergh did last April. The book was long out of print, the secondary market was a little hot for my pocketbook, and I'm a chronic underutilizer of the library system (which was often short of copies itself, depending on the area).
But after the most recent wave of positive comments about the book that Sam's blog post inspired, rather than mope over the secondary market listings one more time, I decided to investigate why a book that sells for $50 used has been out of print for so long. Through the magic of the Internets, we were able to get in touch with author Kevin Kerrane, and I'm happy to announce that Prospectus Entertainment Ventures has reached an agreement with Kerrane to bring a revised, updated edition of Dollar Sign on the Muscle to bookshelves, e-readers, and computers everywhere in 2013. We'll have more news about its availability, as well as more background on the book, in the coming weeks. But for now, we hope you'll be as excited about the new edition's impending arrival as we are.

BP Announcements: Important Account Information - Please Read |
Please read this important announcement about your Baseball Prospectus account information.
Update: we sent out our password reset emails, and the domain used on them is bbp.cx, not baseballprospectus.com . bbp.cx is owned by Baseball Prospectus and is actually just a mirror of our baseballprospectus.com domain. We used the shorter URL to keep mailreaders from wrapping and breaking it. Apologies for the confusion.
On April 28, 2012, we disconnected the Baseball Prospectus email server from the Internet because it was behaving erratically. On May 6, 2012, we discovered that there had been an unauthorized intrusion into that server, which we believe lasted less than 24 hours. At the time, it did not appear that any subscriber information had been compromised. We immediately put in place strict measures to prevent any further compromise to member information via our other servers.

BP Unfiltered: Newsletter Update |
You haven't gotten any newsletters this week. Here's what's going on.
After over 2700 editions delivered, our ancient newsletter server shipped its last text-only batch of newsletters last weekend and celebrated by melting down into its component elements. We tried to get the thing back online this week, but have been unable to revive it. So its time for Baseball Prospectus to get a modern newsletter solution.

Baseball Prospectus Book News: BP2012 Update Coming Next Week |
We're producing our first-ever package of updates to the annual book.
We're currently putting the finishing touches on a supplement to Baseball Prospectus 2012 (which is available in many formats at attractive prices this year, in case you don't already have your copy). We'll be releasing the supplement via PDF (and potentially other formats) early next week. The purpose of the supplement is to include some additional material we weren't able to fit into the published version and fix a few oversights along the way. When it comes to 576-page, large-format books compiled in a matter of weeks, we've found there's always something to change. In particular, the update will include:
