And, does Dave Stewart care?

Diamondbacks interested in Yovani Gallardo
The desert was ripe with rumors over the weekend, one that came to fruition and others that might take time to unfold. After exporting Jeremy Hellickson to Philadelphia, the D’backs are said to be in the market for free-agent pitchers, but it’s not yet clear which starters could fit into general manager Dave Stewart’s budget.

The Astros lose by a millimeter, Marcus Stroman continues his triumphant return, and more.

The Wednesday Takeaway
They call baseball a game of inches. But sometimes, during a September playoff race, in the replay-review era, an even smaller unit of measurement comes into play in a critical game.

The Astros entered play Wednesday two games behind the Rangers in the West and just 2½ up on the Angels for the junior circuit's second Wild Card berth. Their shaky footing became even shakier when the Halos carried a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth of their series finale at Minute Maid Park.

The Cubs and Cardinals played beanball this weekend; the rest of the league played baseball. Read about it all here!

The Weekend Takeaways
The Cubs and the Cardinals are rivals, apparently. It can be a tough to remember something like that, especially given how far apart the teams were success-wise the last decade, but now that they're both good (and sustainably so), tensions between the teams have mounted again.

Let's get the shenanigans out of the way first. On Friday, Dan Haren bonked Matt Holliday in the head with a pitch. The maliciousness of this event seems questionable at best, because it was Holliday's first at-bat of the game—he was pinch-hitting for Tyler Lyons—and because Haren bent down after delivering the pitch, presumably in regret.

The playoffs are coming! The playoffs are coming!

The Thursday Takeaway
The penultimate Cubs-Pirates series of the season was a chance for the current NL Central runners-up to spar over the right to host the senior circuit's Wild Card game. Pittsburgh, the home team, entered with a four-game lead over Chicago, and with a rainout makeup tacked onto the front end of what had been a three-game set, that meant the visitors could draw even with a sweep. Joe Maddon's team wasn't able to do that, dropping the opener rescheduled from August 3rd, but it did get the next-best thing.

Chicago's third victory came in the series' second matinee, a game that did not lack for scoring and storylines. The Cubs loaded the bases in the opening frame on two singles and an error by Jung-ho Kang. Then, Anthony Rizzo hit a run-scoring double-play ball, a positive outcome for the Pirates, given the circumstances, except that …

BASEBALL GAMES

The Tuesday Takeaway
With first place in the American League West on the line in Arlington, the Rangers announced their intent to seize it loud and clear—and early—on Tuesday night. Derek Holland erased a leadoff single with a double-play ball and a two-out double with a groundout. Then the Rangers' offense went to work.

Delino DeShields Jr. greeted Collin McHugh with a single. He proceeded to steal second before Shin-Soo Choo drew a walk. Prince Fielder singled in DeShields. Adrian Beltre singled in Choo. Both sluggers advanced when Mitch Moreland was hit by a pitch. Rougned Odor plated Fielder on a fielder's choice. And Elvis Andrus singled in Beltre. Just like that, the Astros were down 4-0.

Nats! Mets! Another disaster for Matt Williams!

The Wednesday Takeaway
When the Nationals took the field last night, their hopes of gaining ground on the Mets in the three-game showdown on their turf had already been dashed. The series victory had already been celebrated in the visitors' clubhouse. All the hosts could do now was avoid a sweep.

Washington's homegrown franchise cornerstones, Stephen Strasburg—the first-overall pick in the 2009 draft—and Bryce Harper, who followed in his footsteps in 2010, marched onto the diamond determined to deprive Mid-Atlantic headline writers of the "National disaster" puns they craved. A loss would justify those, of course, because there'd be no other way to spin a seven-game deficit with 23 left to play.
