Rumor Roundup: Everth Cabrera is a Wanted Man

3

Daniel Rathman

The Blue Jays might be interested in an infielder with legal troubles, while the Orioles might demand a substantial return if they let Dan Duquette go.

Jays might look at Everth Cabrera to play second base
The Jays have a new catcher, a new third baseman, a new first baseman, a new left fielder, and possibly a new second baseman, if Devon Travis, who came over from the Tigers for Anthony Gose, wins the job out of spring training. For all of general manager Alex Anthopoulos’ efforts, though, the keystone might still come down to a competition between Ryan Goins, Maicer Izturis, and Steve Tolleson, if Travis—whose prospect stock varies depending on whose opinion you seek—fails to impress in Grapefruit League play.

Adding another veteran option with upside might thus be tempting. The Jays have some recent history of buying low on players with makeup concerns (Colby Rasmus) or performance-enhancing drug ties (Melky Cabrera), and CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman tweeted Thursday that they might be prepared to go bargain hunting in the same bin.

Rumor Roundup: The World Is Drunk On Burke Badenhop Rumors

6

Daniel Rathman

The Blue Jays and Nationals could be in on Burke Badenhop, while Jonny Gomes might find a fit in Atlanta.

Blue Jays, Nationals in talks with Burke Badenhop
After padding their lineup, most notably with the additions of Josh Donaldson and Russell Martin, the Blue Jays could still use a little bullpen depth to replace the departed Casey Janssen. So could the Nats, who’ve been busy in recent days, exporting Tyler Clippard to get Yunel Escobar, and then breaking the bank for Max Scherzer. FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi says those two clubs are eyeing a fellow right-hander whose mediocre strikeout rates belie his middle- and late-inning utility.

Rumor Roundup: Big Yields Shields

9

Daniel Rathman

With Scherzer off the board, James Shields is going to be a hot topic. The Tigers are interested.

Tigers keeping tabs on James Shields
Now that former Tiger Max Scherzer is no longer the star of free agent show, ex-Royal James Shields is. FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi tweeted Friday that Scherzer’s most recent employer is at least kicking the tires on Shields to take over his vacated rotation spot.

The Texas right-hander's bad medicals won't stop a team from signing him, per reports. Meanwhile, Daniel Nava's going to chuck switch-hitting.

Alexi Ogando expected to sign next week
A three-win pitcher as recently as 2011, Alexi Ogando was non-tendered by the Rangers on December 2nd, falling victim to the “what have you done for me lately?” nature of the business. What he’s done lately is post a 6.84 ERA over just 25 innings of major-league work last year, before UCL trouble in his elbow forced him to the shelf, and that wasn’t worth a raise over his $2.6 million salary for 2014.

THe Diamondbacks, Rockies, Dodgers, Giants and Padres are linked in various combinations to James Shields, Yoan Lopez and Dillon Gee.

Yoan Lopez poised to break international signing record
While many are waiting for the Office of Foreign Assets and Control (OFAC) to clear infielder Yoan Moncada to sign with major-league organizations, a countryman and namesake is likely to beat him to the punch.

Rumor Roundup: Tigers Talk Big About Scherzer

1

Daniel Rathman

The Tigers "have to have" their ace, while the Diamondbacks don't have to have a catcher, and Carlos Peguero doesn't have to have a clue at the plate to draw suitors.

Do the Tigers “Have to Have” Max Scherzer?
On Friday, a team official told Tony Paul of the Detroit News that finding a way to re-sign the right-hander is a must. We don’t know if that’s the prevailing viewpoint within the front office, but Paul’s tweet indicates that at least one decision-maker feels that Scherzer must be retained at all costs.

Rumor Roundup: Flushing Out Their Arms

0

Daniel Rathman

The Mets may finally be ready to deal one of their veteran arms and Brandon Beachy could be ready to choose his new home.

Mets preparing for trade talks about surplus pitchers
New York Post beat writer Mike Puma wrote Tuesday that calls about the Mets’ extra starters are likely to ramp up in the coming days. The three pitchers in question are right-handers Bartolo Colon and Dillon Gee, and left-hander Jonathon Niese, who’d likely command the heftiest return.

Rumor Roundup: Rasmus All About the Orioles?

3

Daniel Rathman

Rasmus' suitors are dwindling and Ichiro may land in the NL.

Colby Rasmus impressed with overture from Buck Showalter
Orioles skipper Buck Showalter visited with free agent outfielder Colby Rasmus over the weekend with a two-pronged mission: gauge Rasmus’ questionable makeup and persuade him to come to Baltimore. We don’t yet know whether the club is comfortable with the former. We do, however, have reason to believe that the former Blue Jay is sold on the latter.

Rumor Roundup: Haren Not Feeling Fish

3

Daniel Rathman

Marlins having trouble selling Haren on Miami, Giants out on Shields, in on Zorilla, and Rox sticking with Rosario, add Hundley.

Dan Haren still unwilling to pitch for Marlins
It’s been nearly a month since the Marlins got Dan Haren—plus $10 million to cover his 2015 salary—from the Dodgers in a deal that also involved Dee Gordon and Andrew Heaney. They acquired Haren knowing that he’d stated a willingness to retire if traded away from his hometown of Los Angeles but hoped to sway him to join a club that appears to be a burgeoning contender. According to Joe Frisaro, who covers the Fish for MLB.com, they’ve made little headway in that respect.

Toronto has K-Rod and Japanese veteran shortstop Takashi Toritani on its radar, while Stephen Drew gets a token rumor.

Blue Jays, Padres interested in Takashi Toritani
While the spotlight for infielders across the Pacific has recently been on Korean shortstop Jung-ho Kang, for whom the Pirates won negotiating rights, a Japanese veteran might join him in the majors next year. According to Brendan Kennedy, who covers the Blue Jays for the Toronto Star, the club is one of two eyeing Toritani, a shortstop with the Hanshin Tigers.

Rumor Roundup: Tigers Like Tiger, Tigers Say

6

Daniel Rathman

Detroit is comfortable with an in-house solution, the Giants are favorites to land Ben Zobrist (OR ARE THEY!?), and David Price is preparing to headline this space next winter.

Tigers might use internal options to round out bench
Among the items on the offseason shopping list for Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski was at least one left-handed hitter to balance out a roster that skews heavily to the right.

Rumor Roundup: Troy Tulowitzki Won't Be a Met... Maybe

13

Daniel Rathman

More Tulo to New York rumors pop up and are squashed, the Phils look to replace a Rollins, and Scherzer may have lost another suitor.

Mets will not acquire Troy Tulowitzki… at least not yet
The Mets need a shortstop and have excess pitchers. The Rockies have a great one and an eternal need for pitching. But former Rockies beat writer Troy Renck, who now covers the Broncos for the Denver Post, tweeted on Friday night that the sides aren’t likely to consummate a blockbuster any time soon.
