What You Need to Know: The Rockies' Other Big Bat

3

Daniel Rathman

Justin Morneau goes deep again, plus news about Clayton Kershaw, Prince Fielder, and Cole Hamels, and what to watch today.

The Weekend Takeaway
Troy Tulowitzki and Nolan Arenado have garnered most of the press surrounding the Rockies’ torrid start—and deservedly so, considering the shortstop’s otherworldly numbers and the third baseman’s league-best 28-game hitting streak and highlight-reel defense at the hot corner. But another member of Colorado’s infield was the man of the hour on Sunday, and he’s been flying under the radar all season.

What You Need to Know: Tuesday's Late Lead Changes

7

Daniel Rathman

Excitement in Cincy, Seattle, and Baltimore, plus what to watch on Wednesday.

The Tuesday Takeaway
Between the opening of Great American Ball Park in 2003 and the first pitch of Tuesday’s contest with the Padres in town, only twice had a team won a game at the bandbox despite logging three or fewer hits. Both times, that team was the host Reds—once in 2004 and once in 2005.

The other events around baseball on the day the news about the Marlins ace's injury broke, plus what to watch today.

The Monday Takeaway
With two away in the top of the ninth inning of game one of four between the Cubs and Cardinals, Mike Matheny put infielder Daniel Descalso on the mound. By then, the Cubs had scored 17 runs on 20 hits. The game was long over.

What You Need to Know: Blue Jays Blasts

2

Daniel Rathman

Toronto's offensive onslaught continues, the Marlins win again, and more action from Thursday, plus what to watch this weekend.

The Thursday Takeaway
It’s no secret that the Rockies lead the league in hitting and home runs. But after lighting up the Rogers Centre last night, the Blue Jays—who’ve played two fewer games than the Rockies—are right on their tails.

What You Need to Know: Mariners Making Moves

4

Daniel Rathman

Seattle takes three of four from Oakland, plus more takeaways from a busy Wednesday and tips on what to watch today.

The Wednesday Takeaway
Tuesday’s theme was many happy returns. Wednesday’s, at least in the doubleheader between the Mariners and Athletics, was overcoming adversity.

What You Need to Know: Tulo on a Tear

2

Daniel Rathman

The Rockies have a pair of very hot hitters, plus other action from Monday and what to watch today.

The Monday Takeaway
Troy Tulowitzki took the field on Monday batting .400/.500/.730 on the season and .591/.655/1.000 at Coors Field. Just a reminder: That was before Monday’s opener versus the Rangers.

What You Need to Know: Weekend Wrap-Up, 5/5

11

Daniel Rathman

Dan runs down the highlights from this past weekend and tells you what to watch today.

The Weekend Takeaway
About a month and a half ago, the Baseball Prospectus staff wrote about spring training performances we sort of believed in. Rob Arthur chose to cover Anthony Rizzo, who was batting .392/.452/.750 at the time. With six home runs through 121 plate appearances, Rizzo has spent the first month and change of the season giving us reason to believe that the power spike he showed in Arizona is here to stay. But he’s done more than that. Still three months shy of his 25th birthday, Rizzo might be morphing into one of the best hitters in the National League.

What You Need to Know: A Busy Thursday in Baseball

9

Daniel Rathman

Tim Welke's bad day, Yasiel Puig's hot streak, head-first slides, and other Thursday topics, plus what to watch this weekend.

What You Need to Know: Harang Unravels

1

Daniel Rathman

Harang, Scherzer, Cingrani, and other nobable performers from Wednesday, plus what to watch today.

The Wednesday Takeaway
All good things must end someday. For Aaron Harang, a storybook first month, most of which he spent at or near the top of the ERA leaderboard for major-league starters, closed with a thud in Miami on Wednesday night.

What You Need to Know: Jose Fernandez, All Over the Field

5

Daniel Rathman

Fernandez, Billy Hamilton, Dustin McGowan, and other notable names from Tuesday, plus what to watch today.

The Tuesday Takeaway
Jose Fernandez can do things on a baseball field that most pitchers can’t—or, in many cases, wouldn’t even dream of.

What You Need to Know: Gray Matters

4

Daniel Rathman

Sonny Gray, the Brewers bullpen, and other Monday stars, plus what to watch today.

The Monday Takeaway
First innings have been a bear for Athletics ace Sonny Gray this season. Coming into his start at Globe Life Park on Monday, Gray had issued six walks and recorded four strikeouts in the opening frame of his first four starts; his K:BB ratio thereafter was a solid 27-to-7.
