The Stash List: First Edition

It's back! And you'll never guess who's leading it off!

It feels good to be back.

No more draft preparation. No more overanalyzing splits from the previous season. No more ADP. No more spring training stats (sort of). It’s all eschewed for the sights and sounds of real, live baseball.

The Padres add one more superstar, while taking on far too many millions for Melvin Upton; the Braves get leaner while the short-term outlook gets sadder.

My Model Portfolio: Find a Way to Get Trout

0

Bret Sayre

Bret buys an upside-laden pitching staff and leaves over the $47 he needs to put Mike Trout atop his roster.

Mike Gianella recently released his latest mixed league Bid Limits, which spurred an idea from Bret Sayre called Model Portfolios, wherein the fantasy staff will create their own team within the confines of a standard 23-man, $260 budget. The roster being constructed includes: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, CI, MI, OFx5, UTx2, and Px9 along with the following standards issued by Sayre:

Fantasy Freestyle: Endgame Targets for 2015

A closer look at 20 players obtainable on the cheap in drafts and auctions this spring.

With the weekend of our first regular-season game approaching, it’s time for my final and favorite column of the preseason.

We’ve been doing rankings and analysis here for the last three months and hopefully they’ve been helpful to you as you sort through all of the information that leads (or has led) to your most important draft decisions. And so as we arrive at the endgame of draft season, it seems only fitting to focus on the endgame of drafts. It’s the most interesting aspect of team construction, as individual owners’ valuation only gets more divergent as initial roster construction draws to a close. As I’ve said many times, finishing out your draft strong is a must if you want to win your league.

Tout Wars X

7

Bret Sayre

Bret goes for it.

There are moments of calm that come before you sit down to participate in a draft or an auction, even when it’s a heightened environment, because you’ve almost always seen what is about to be thrown at you before. On Saturday, the environment was certainly heightened—as I was at Tout Wars, surrounded by a very well-versed and smart group of participants—but the calm was missing. After all, this wasn’t a standard draft or auction.

The concept behind Tout Wars X is that each year the format will change—testing out new twists and turns on the game that we all love. And in its inaugural season, that format was the monthly game made quite popular by Ron Shandler at his site, shandlerpark.com. So on this day, myself and nine other participants were snake drafting players at set salary cap values to use for the first four weeks of the season. So while the game was new, the stakes were much lower than the other auctions going on around us, simply because we were playing for one-sixth of the upcoming season. At the beginning of each subsequent month, we will all be selecting our teams using a basic salary cap system, just without the fun of the live draft.

Picks 106 to 150 take you from Rio Ruiz to Roman Quinn.

In all of our responsibilities, we make decisions and come up with ideas that are not our finest moments. It’s human nature. It’s what drives us to do better. When I came up with the idea to create a mock prospect draft for dynasty leagues years ago, it was one that frankly I wasn’t sure would be super helpful or entertaining—but it has turned into one of my favorite exercises of the off-season. And it’s only become more fun as the participants have gotten stronger. This year we added names from CBS, BaseballHQ and Rotoworld—along with many of our household-name-in-the-fantasy-community participants form last year.

Just like we did last year (and the year before that), we first must examine the parameters. There are always parameters. These were the instructions for the participants of this draft, straight from the email I sent out prior to kickoff:
