Fantasy Beat: Value Picks in the Outfield

If Carlos Beltran goes down, the Mets outfield will have plenty of question marks, and Bill gives you preemptive answers.

I'm pinch-hitting for Rob McQuown today, but feel free to leave him comments about future outfielders to cover.

Fantasy Beat: Value Picks in the Rotation

A look at the candidates to replace Adam Wainwright in St. Louis, and Aaron Heilman finally gets his wish to attempt starting.

In the wake of injuries to Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter, the St. Louis Cardinals are scrambling to patch together a complete starting rotation. Wainwright will miss the entire season due to Tommy John surgery, but Carpenter's strained left hamstring is not serious and he should have plenty of time to heal before the start of the regular season. The Cardinals will be scanning the trade market and waiver wire for replacement candidates, but are also looking from within. Let us investigate some of those internal options.

Fantasy Beat: Value Picks in the Rotation

A look at some of the unluckiest starters around in 2010, and whether you should expect different results in 2011.

In keeping with last week's theme of looking at the biggest gaps between ERA and SIERA, this week we will deal with the unluckier pitchers from 2010.

Fantasy Beat: Cain's Gains

17

Bill Baer

SIERA and other run estimators say Matt Cain is over his head, but are they missing the point on this pitcher?

In an article I wrote for my blog recently, I wondered why we neglect to dock Matt Cain "points" for pitching in AT&T Park, a pitcher-friendly ballpark, while at the same time being very mindful of Coors Field in evaluating the MVP award candidacy of Carlos Gonzalez. During the 2010 season, Gonzalez posted an OPS of 1162 home, but a more average-looking 775 OPS on the road. Similarly, Cain has a career 3.19 ERA at home but 3.76 on the road.

Checking in on pitchers from St. Louis, Boston, and the Senior Circuit's New York club, to see if they can repeat their success.

In this week's installment, we will be looking at some pitchers with large gaps between their 2010 ERA and SIERA, and trying to determine whether their results were fluky or if we should expect that kind of production forward. You can find the SIERA leaderboard (min. 100 IP) by clicking here.

A fatigued Met, a lucky Oriole, an iffy Bomber, and a defenseless Astro make up this week's rotation.

Is Jimmy Rollins finished, or was 2010 just a very large bump in the road?

We just started this series on Monday, so you're forgiven if you missed the first. But the plan is to have a pair of our fantasy authors answer varying questions, in order to give you multiple angles on relevant topics. Today's question: "Is Jimmy Rollins finished?"

Mike Petriello: "Finished" is something of a relative term. Is Jimmy Rollins the player he once was?  It's hard to look at three consecutive years of declining OPS (culminating in last year's .694) from a shortstop who's on the wrong side of 30 and think that he's getting back to his 2007 MVP form anytime soon. Even more troubling, his 2010 was interrupted by multiple injuries to his right leg, which combined to cost him 84 days of the season, and when he was able to play over the second half of the year, his OBP was just .302. This is one of those situations where I don't look at the career-low BABIP as a factor of luck, but an indicator that a traditionally speedy player is no longer able to beat out the hits he once could. While there's an argument to be made that he can still recover from those leg injuries and regain some of that value, let's not forget that he was coming off a healthier 2009 in which he had 725 plate appearances and still only got on base at a clip of .296.
