Value Picks: Starting Pitchers for 8/12/11 |
The D-Train makes an appearance on BP in addition to a Seattle starter you probably hadn't heard of before a few months ago.
Newcomers
Dontrelle Willis, Cincinnati Reds (Yahoo! 4%, ESPN 3%, CBS 20%)
The fantasy baseball world has been rocked with two great redemption stories this season: one by Ryan Vogelsong and another by the D-Train himself. After a blazing-hot start to his career in 2003, which included winning the NL Rookie of the Year award and a World Series ring, his last three seasons have been a trainwreck. From 2008-10, the lefty has logged only 123.1 innings with a K/9 below 6.0 and a BB/9 approaching 8.7. No, that’s not a typo: 8.7.

Value Picks: Starting Pitchers for 8/5/11 |
Bill welcomes a couple of unspectacular but solid options to VP this week while saying goodbye to a hard-throwing youngster undergoing TJS.
Newcomers
Brett Cecil, Toronto Blue Jays (15% Yahoo!, 14% ESPN, 27% CBS)
In his first three starts since being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas in late June, Cecil looked shaky, allowing 10 runs in 20 and one-third innings. In his three starts since, he has allowed four runs in 22 innings while striking out 17 and walking six. Those most recent three starts were against the Texas Rangers twice (AL's third-best offense) and the Rays—certainly high-quality competition. Cecil plays best in AL-only leagues but could be worth the risk depending on your place in the standings and the categories you need in deep mixed leagues.

Value Picks: Starting Pitchers for 7/29/11 |
Bill welcomes a pair of former prospects to VP and wonders whether Chris Capuano is fatigued or injured.
Newcomers
David Huff, Cleveland Indians (2% Yahoo!, 2% ESPN, 4% CBS)
Huff has looked quite good in his first two MLB starts of the year. His solid performance in his last start was overshadowed by the incompetence of his team's offense and defense, at least on that particular day. The Indians' defense committed five errors behind him while Ervin Santana tossed baseball's third no-hitter of the season.

Value Picks: Starting Pitchers for 7/22/11 |
Bill welcomes a once highly-regard prospect and a hard-throwing LA rookie to VP.
Newcomers
Jeff Niemann, Tampa Bay Rays (11% Yahoo!, 6% ESPN, 44% CBS)
Niemann thrust himself onto the fantasy baseball map with an eight-inning masterpiece against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. He allowed only two hits and two walks while striking out ten, continuing a trend of good pitching since joining the rotation on June 20. He has gone at least six innings and allowed one run or fewer in four of his five starts since with an ugly start against the lowly Houston Astros smudging his report card.

Value Picks: Starting Pitchers for 7/15/11 |
Bill welcomes Mark Buehrle and Carlos Villanueva to the list as he waits for the second half to start.
Given the All-Star break, not much has changed since the last column. Perhaps with another look, though, you can find someone to help you out in your fantasy leagues.

Value Picks: Starting Pitchers for 7/8/11 |
Bill welcomes a DL-returnee and a surprising Kansas City pitcher to VP this week.
Folks, I’m sorry for my absence last Friday. I had to deal with a personal matter and could not crunch out my column in time. If you had or have any questions regarding the past few weeks in fantasy baseball, I will be happy to take up a conversation in the comments. Likewise, you are always welcome to email me, or catch me on the Twitters. Here is what I am looking at this week.

Fantasy Beat: Value Picks in the Rotation |
A former first-rounder picks up steam, while a couple of DL veterans once again fall victim to their own fragility.
Newcomers
Rick Porcello, Detroit Tigers (21 percent ESPN; 21 percent Yahoo!)
Considering that he was a first-round pick in the 2007 draft and how quickly he progressed through the Tigers' minor-league system, it should not be a surprise how well Porcello has pitched lately. But his 2010 season was a disaster and prevented many fantasy players from drafting him at all in most leagues.
