Deep Impact: Week 13

1

Ben Carsley

Examining a handful of players who might pique your interest in deep leagues.

Now is the intro of our discontent.

Nick Ahmed, INF, Diamondbacks
Ahmed is so gritty and such A Baseball Player (TM), Kevin Towers is probably mad he can’t trade for him again. After battling a “utility infielder” stigma for most of his professional career, Ahmed blew up in Triple-A this season, hitting .324/.390/.431 in 336 games. Sure, that line is bolstered by a .371 BABIP, but Ahmed doesn’t strike out much, will take a walk and can steal some bases, too. In other words, the average is a mirage, but he’s not a player without any offensive skills.

The Call-Up: Mookie Betts

3

Mark Anderson and Ben Carsley

The Red Sox bring a high-average hitter and multi-position player to the big leagues.

Note: This Article was originally published on Saturday, June 28.

The Situation: With the Red Sox wallowing in fourth place in the American League East, and their outfield combining for a putrid .232/.306/.334 line through 80 games, the club had to do something to try and spark its moribund offense. On Saturday, we discovered what that something would be: a call-up for up stud prospect Mookie Betts in the midst of a breakout .345/.437/.520 season that includes 21 doubles, eight home runs, and 29 stolen bases.

Dynasty Dynamics: Progress Report: MLB Edition

6

Ben Carsley and Craig Goldstein

Examining notable big leaguers based on whether their value is moving up, down, or holding steady.

When you’ve done rankings and mock drafts for two straight months, you kind of wonder… why would anyone write about anything else? Sure there are draft grades, but those aren’t nearly as applicable to fantasy.

Then it hits you like a ton of bricks. Something like a… a stock watch. No. Everyone does that. What if you just called it something else. Yes, now you’re cooking with gas. What about a Progress Report? Perfect.

Deep Impact: Week 11

Ben Carsley

Breaking down a handful of players who might pique your interest in deep leagues.

Who can say where the day flows? Why I write intros? Only time.

Andrew Heaney, SP, MIA
Randy Wolf, we hardly knew ye. After four starts and 25 2/3 innings of uninspiring ball, the Marlins have elected to opt for a youngster with just a touch more upside in Heaney, who’s shot through their MiLB system since being drafted ninth overall in 2012. After dominating in Double-A for 53 2/3 innings earlier this season, Heaney posted a 2.74 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 23 innings at Triple-A. Maybe you prefer your prospects to log more innings in the upper minors, but Heaney has passed every test he’s faced with flying colors thus far.

4

Ben Carsley

Examining a few players who might pique your interest in deep leagues.

What an intro what an intro what an intro what a mighty good intro.

Jeff Locke, SP, Pirates
Gerrit Cole is on the disabled list, which makes me very sad. Locke is replacing him for the time being, which should make deep league owners somewhere in between very sad and mildly interested. Last year, Locke was able to post an ERA of 3.52 in 166 1/3 innings in the majors, grabbing 10 wins and 125 strikeouts. However, Locke’s walk rate helped to send him back down to the minor leagues this year, and the left-hander was knocked around pretty good in Triple-A.

The Call-Up: Eugenio Suarez

5

Mark Anderson and Ben Carsley

The Tigers keep trying to find a shortstop.

The Situation: The Tigers have struggled to find production at shortstop since Jose Iglesias went down with stress fractures in his lower leg, and this move is the next step in a continuing process to correct that problem. The club’s offensive production from shortstop has included a .167/.219/.233 line from the sinced-release Alex Gonzalez, a .167/.217/.190 line from the now-DFA’d Danny Worth, and a .200/.252/.252 line from the soon-to-be-backup Andrew Romine. Take a look at those numbers again and you will quickly understand why the Tigers decided to call-up BP’s no. 9 Tigers prospect.

Deep Impact: Week Nine

5

Ben Carsley

Examining a handful of players who might pique your interest in deep leagues.

You only get one chance to make an introduction. Unless you write a weekly column.

Eddie Butler, SP, Rockies
News broke fairly late last night that Butler will replace Franklin Morales in the Rockies rotation in short order, and this is a very good thing for fantasy owners. Butler will already be owned in dynasty leagues, of course, but in deep leagues with shallow rosters or no minor league rosters, there’s a decent chance he’s unowned. Despite the fact that Butler is a pitcher who will call Coors Field home, that should change immediately.

Dynasty Dynamics: Ideal Dynasty-Style Mock Draft

5

Ben Carsley and Craig Goldstein

If MLB teams made their draft decisions based on fantasy gamers' wishes, here's how the first round would unfold.

The 2014 MLB Draft is just two days away, and with this date comes a host of new fantasy prospects for dynasty leaguers to covet, debate, and decry. While this year’s crop of prep and college talent isn’t quite as impressive as some of what we’ve seen in the recent past, there’s still a bevy of young talent you can use to bolster your MiLB rosters or use as trade chips in an attempt to win now.

With the draft just around the corner, Craig and I were looking for a way to deliver original content to our readers. And then we hit on this idea: What if we created a format in which we assigned each team one player, then explained our reasoning for why each player should end up with said team? It would be like a draft mock-up. A mock draft, if you will. Groundbreaking, we know.
