The Call-Up: Christian Vazquez

9

Al Skorupa and Ben Carsley

The Red Sox replace A.J. Pierzynski with a talented defense-first catcher.

The Situation: A.J. Pierzynski and the Red Sox seemed like a nice fit over the winter, but neither his season nor Boston's season went as planned. Pierzynski’s free-swinging ways clashed with the selective lineup Ben Cherington assembled, and his glove was a weakness. As a result, the team grew increasing frustrated with the veteran backstop, leading to whispers that the Sox were contemplating jettisoning him as early as April. With Boston's catching prospects having fine seasons in the minors, the Sox finally pulled the plug on Pierzynski on Wednesday, calling up 23-year-old catcher Christian Vazquez. Vazquez’s breakout year at Pawtucket has tempted Boston to make this move for some time, and the hope is that he can inject a new energy with his impact defensive skills.

Background: The Red Sox took Vazquez in the ninth round of the 2008 draft out of Puerto Rico Baseball Academy and signed him for an $80,000 bonus. Even with a top-10-round grade, Vazquez was seen as a project on both sides of the ball, and his short, stout frame gave rise to concerns about his body, though those liabilities can sometimes turn into assets behind the plate in terms of durability. At the plate, Vazquez’s small frame isn't conducive to power. His bat speed isn’t a strength either, and swing-and-miss has been a big issue. Vazquez has always been able to throw, but the rest of his defensive game lagged behind. Concerns about his glove were such that in the low minors he saw time at third base, with a smattering of appearances at first and second. Over the last couple years, however, he's addressed many of these doubts.

Dynasty Dynamics: Progress Report: Prospect Edition, Part Two

7

Ben Carsley and Craig Goldstein

Examining minor leaguers based on whether their fantasy arrows are pointing up, down, or sideways.

When you’ve done rankings and mock drafts for two straight months, you kind of wonder… why would anyone write about anything else? Sure there are draft grades, but those aren’t nearly as applicable to fantasy.

Then it hits you like a ton of bricks. Something like a… a stock watch. No. Everyone does that. What if you just called it something else. Yes, now you’re cooking with gas. What about a Progress Report? Perfect.

There Is No Offseason is a podcast that focuses exclusively on dynasty and long-term keeper formats. We talk major leagues, minor leagues and we never miss an opportunity to take a jab at Craig.

Deep Impact: Week 14

1

Ben Carsley

Examining a handful of players who might pique your interest in deep leagues.

There are two types of people in this world: those who write intros, those who don’t, and those who can count.

Brandon McCarthy, RHP, Yankees
I generally write about players you want to target in Deep Impact, but here I want to warn you against giving up anything of much worth of McCarthy. Yes, he’s going to a better situation in terms of win totals in New York. And yes, some of his performance this season can be attributed to poor luck. But those who are simply looking at McCarthy’s BABIP and expecting a major turnaround are going to be disappointed.

Dynasty Dynamics: Futures Team Meet and Greet: World

1

Ben Carsley

In part two of a two-part series, Ben introduces the foreign-born prospects you might not know.

With the MLB Futures Game rosters being announced last week, Craig and I thought it would be informative to take a look at the rosters and provide some base-level information on some of the prospects you might not necessarily know. Given that this column is geared toward deep and dynasty leagues, many of these names will be familiar, but there are always noobs getting into dynasty leagues that are out of their depth and tired of being pwned or whatever. This one’s for them.

Last week, Craig tackled Team USA and did an okay-ish job. This week, I break down the World Team, because I’m not a xenophobic monster.

Deep Impact: Week 13

1

Ben Carsley

Examining a handful of players who might pique your interest in deep leagues.

Now is the intro of our discontent.

Nick Ahmed, INF, Diamondbacks
Ahmed is so gritty and such A Baseball Player (TM), Kevin Towers is probably mad he can’t trade for him again. After battling a “utility infielder” stigma for most of his professional career, Ahmed blew up in Triple-A this season, hitting .324/.390/.431 in 336 games. Sure, that line is bolstered by a .371 BABIP, but Ahmed doesn’t strike out much, will take a walk and can steal some bases, too. In other words, the average is a mirage, but he’s not a player without any offensive skills.

The Call-Up: Mookie Betts

3

Mark Anderson and Ben Carsley

The Red Sox bring a high-average hitter and multi-position player to the big leagues.

Note: This Article was originally published on Saturday, June 28.

The Situation: With the Red Sox wallowing in fourth place in the American League East, and their outfield combining for a putrid .232/.306/.334 line through 80 games, the club had to do something to try and spark its moribund offense. On Saturday, we discovered what that something would be: a call-up for up stud prospect Mookie Betts in the midst of a breakout .345/.437/.520 season that includes 21 doubles, eight home runs, and 29 stolen bases.

Deep Impact: Week 11

2

Ben Carsley

Breaking down a handful of players who might pique your interest in deep leagues.

Who can say where the day flows? Why I write intros? Only time.

Andrew Heaney, SP, MIA
Randy Wolf, we hardly knew ye. After four starts and 25 2/3 innings of uninspiring ball, the Marlins have elected to opt for a youngster with just a touch more upside in Heaney, who’s shot through their MiLB system since being drafted ninth overall in 2012. After dominating in Double-A for 53 2/3 innings earlier this season, Heaney posted a 2.74 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 23 innings at Triple-A. Maybe you prefer your prospects to log more innings in the upper minors, but Heaney has passed every test he’s faced with flying colors thus far.
