Alex Cobb prepares to depart Tampa Bay, the Diamondbacks shop Nick Ahmed, and Chi Chi Gonzalez takes a turn on the disabled list.

Cobb draws trade interest from Cubs, Dodgers

Alex Cobb has been patient for the last two years. He waited through platelet-rich plasma treatments when he was first diagnosed with a torn UCL in 2015. He bided his time through the inevitable Tommy John surgery and the accompanying 349-day recovery period. He worked his way back to the mound, slowly and steadily, and pitched 22 innings of 5.04 DRA ball that reassured the Rays he still had a usable arm while simultaneously confirming that he was not yet near the 2.69 DRA, 4.4 WARP pitcher he had been in 2014.

The Nationals prepare to release Derek Norris, while Julio Urias and Trevor Rosenthal appear on the verge of losing their starting roles.

Rays, Royals could be interested in Norris

The Nationals placed veteran catcher Derek Norris on waivers Saturday and are expected to release him sometime this week. If they do so before March 15, they’ll only be on the hook for his termination pay, which comes in around $700,000 compared to the $4.2 million salary he would have received in 2017. Norris lost his starting role after the team picked up Matt Wieters on a one-year, $10.5 million contract in February. They reportedly made a good faith effort to trade him, but his price tag and abysmal offensive production for the Padres in 2016 made it a tough sell.

Fernando Abad jeopardizes his spot in the Red Sox's bullpen, Brett Lawrie enters free agency, and the Royals decline to open extension talks with core players.

Abad foregoes camp competition for World Baseball Classic

Red Sox relief candidate Fernando Abad will participate in his first World Baseball Classic for Team Dominican. Playing in the WBC is generally regarded as an honor, but in this case it might compromise his chances of making the Opening Day roster.

Josh Hamilton's knee gives out again, Joe Maddon juggles rotation options, and Jose Quintana continues to draw trade interest.

Hamilton to undergo third knee surgery

Everything seemed to align for Josh Hamilton’s big-league comeback in 2017, but another bout of knee pain has all but eradicated his chances of joining the Rangers in time for Opening Day.

Eric Gagne eyes a return to the majors, the Mets talk extension figures with Neil Walker, and the Yankees get into hot water with Dellin Betances.

Gagne considering a major league comeback

Eric Gagne is 41 years old. Eric Gagne has not played a full season of baseball at any level since 2009, has not carried a major-league contract since 2008, and has not, as was so elegantly written in the Baseball Prospectus 2005 Annual, “[exorcised] the stoicism out of Dodger Stadium and made it just plain rock” since 2004.

Sean Rodriguez schedules shoulder surgery, Drew Pomeranz and Steven Wright prepare for a spring training delay, and the Cubs and Padres vie for Travis Wood's services.

Rodriguez set to undergo shoulder surgery

It’s been a rough offseason for Sean Rodriguez. The Braves’ infielder was involved in a serious car crash in late January, one that hospitalized his wife and two of his children after the family’s SUV was t-boned by a stolen police cruiser. While Rodriguez left the scene with “minor injuries,” according to an initial report from WSVN.com’s Ann Kiel, he is scheduled to undergo shoulder surgery later this week.

The Pirates reshuffle their outfield, Shane Victorino postpones his 2017 return, and Jung Ho Kang prepares to enter an alcohol treatment program.

McCutchen moving to right field in 2017

The Pirates are ready to move Andrew McCutchen this season, but not to another team. Instead, they’re switching things up in the outfield, where McCutchen will shift from center field to right field, left fielder Starling Marte will be stationed in center, and right fielder Gregory Polanco will take over duties in left field.

Brad Miller prepares for a shift to second base, Matt Wieters draws interest around the league, and Chris Tillman awaits an extension offer.

Miller could move to second base

Logan Forsythe is out and Brad Miller, it appears, is in. Since the Rays dealt Forsythe to the Dodgers for right-hander Jose De Leon last week, they’ve been puzzling over how best to anchor their middle infield this season. They could net another second baseman via trade or free agency, but Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times suggests that an internal solution may play out better for the club.

Tim Lincecum refuses to retire, Yu Darvish contemplates a contract extension, and Tyson Ross gets a revised start date.

Lincecum still hunting for opportunity

Tim Lincecum really wants to play baseball, probably more than most people want to do most things. His agent, Rick Thurman, told Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News that Lincecum is still preparing for the upcoming season, despite not having a) a contract or b) any publicized interest from a major-league team.

The Cardinals gear up for their first arbitration hearing in years, Craig Breslow schedules a pitching showcase, and Carl Crawford contemplates retirement (maybe).

Cardinals anticipate first arbitration hearing since 1999

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak is test-driving a new strategy with his arbitration-eligible players. According to his comments made at the annual Cardinals Care Winter Warm-Up event over the weekend, those who did not settle with the team prior to the Friday deadline will go to an arbitration hearing. It’s a relatively common tact that the front office has considered for a few years now, and Mozeliak claimed that the hard-nosed approach was intended to encourage players to work through salary negotiations by Friday’s deadline.

Brandon Phillips nixes a trade to the Braves, Trevor Plouffe rumors abound, and C.J. Wilson prepares for an upcoming showcase.

Phillips vetoes trade to Atlanta

Brandon Phillips exercised his 10-and-5 rights to block a deal that would have sent him to the Braves this past November, according to a report by Ken Rosenthal. It’s the third time Phillips has utilized his 10-and-5 rights in the past two years, including two vetoed trades to the Diamondbacks and Nationals during the 2015 offseason, and it appears he’s not ready to leave Cincinnati just yet.

The Orioles play hard to get with Mark Trumbo, the Tigers balk at Alex Avila's price tag, and the Mariners consider dealing Seth Smith.

Orioles withdraw four-year offer from Trumbo

The on-again, off-again saga between Mark Trumbo and the Orioles is off again. The team took its four-year, $52 million deal off the table, per a report by Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com. Kubatko notes that the move doesn’t necessarily signify the end of the Orioles’ efforts to sign Trumbo, however, as they pulled the same stunt with Chris Davis last winter before signing him to a seven-year, $161 million contract. Such is the nature of offseason wheeling and dealing, especially in Baltimore.
