What Makes Position Players Injury Prone?

by Robert Arthur

Even though wounded pitchers get all the attention (and rightfully so, in the case of Jose Fernandez’ Tommy John tragedy), position players get injured too. Just this week, the Rockies lost Nolan Arenado because of a finger fracture, the Yankees were deprived of Mark Teixeira on account of his persistent wrist problems, and the Mariners missed a few games of Robinson Cano. The absence of Jose Abreu, brief as it was, was surely no less painful on a per-game basis than the injuries of Patrick Corbin or Jarrod Parker.

Out of curiosity, what program are you performing the tests in?

Awesome, thanks. I started with R about six months ago and I don't think I'll ever be able (or want) to use anything else.

Maybe it's impolite to name names, but when you apply the model to current players, does anyone stick out as a particular injury risk who isn't already on the DL?

I can name names, just didn't want the piece to get too long. Some notables: Carl Crawford (he just went on the DL, actually), Ryan Howard, Matt Kemp, Peter Bourjos, Brett Lawrie. It would have called Franklin Gutierrez's absence (he was #1). Troy Tulowitzki is 20th, with ~20 predicted DL days. Basically, the people who've had the most injury problems in the last few years.
