What Scouts Are Saying

April 25, 2014

by Baseball Prospectus

Many of our authors make a habit of speaking to scouts and other talent evaluators in order to bring you the best baseball information available. Not all of the tidbits gleaned from those conversations make it into our articles, but we don't want them to go to waste. Instead, we'll be collecting them in a regular feature called "What Scouts Are Saying," which will be open to participation from the entire BP staff and include quotes about minor leaguers and major leaguers alike.

Major Leagues

Mets C Travis D'Arnaud: “I haven't liked him so far. He hasn't looked good defensively, including allowing a bunch of passed balls. I've seen him miss some fastballs, almost like he has a blind spot. It's slider bat speed and he just doesn't look very strong. He hasn't had a whole lot of energy either. It's been pretty rough overall.”

Marlins RHP Jose Fernandez: "The kid is proving to be everything we expected and more. He's throwing with such confidence and determination that I can't envision many back-to-back poor outings. He seems to learn more from every start. Scary that he may only be scratching the surface of his potential."

Braves RHP Julio Teheran: "He didn't have his best fastball, working more 90-92 than 93-96 like he did in the spring, but he did a great job pitching and you can see him slowly emerging as an ace and leader of that Braves staff. His matchup against Cliff Lee was one of the best pitched games, on both sides, of this early season."

If the Phillies were smart they would clean out the Ranger's cupboards in an Utley deal.

They'll most likely hold on to him until whenever his contract is up, probably when he's not so great anymore, get nothing out of it and still not have a good team. It would just be too easy.

According to Baseball-Reference, D'Arnaud has one passed ball. I don't think that's a bunch. The Mets do have 10 wild pitches. Sometimes the difference between the two isn't much. Maybe that's what the scout means.

Like line drives and errors, the passed ball/wild pitch distinction can be quite subjective. I think the scout must have seen more of them as being d'Arnaud's fault than did the official scorer.

Am I the only one terrified that Fernandez relies heavily on a breaking pitch which essentially increases his risk of TJ by several factors more and more when he has a terrific fastball to work off?
