January 23, 2013 Transaction AnalysisYoung and Running Out Of Time
Signed OF-R Ben Francisco to a minor-league deal. [1/21] If The Asylum were to make a film about a bat-first, platoon-neutral, low-production corner outfielder, then Francisco would be the leading man. He has almost no platoon split, which is great when it's applied to a star like Ryan Braun, but when we're talking about a guy who balances mediocre against mediocre, there's just no way to leverage it. We see specialist types—be it relievers or bench types—make it onto rosters all the time, but not players like Francisco. The idea of a corner outfielder without a platoon split is good; too bad the execution with Francisco is poor. —R.J. Anderson

Thanks, R.J., for going deeper on the Delmon signing and giving it perspective instead of the obvious response. I suspect we'll know rather rapidly how this will turn out if Delmon shows up in Clearwater minus some of the weight he's carried the last two years. If he's not serious about salvaging his career the write off will be minimal.
Sam penned the Delmon writeup. I'm amused by your comment about Delmon carrying "weight" -- several kinds.
You might want to thank Sam too, considering he actually did the write-up on Delmon. 8]
Thanks, Sam. Although I will say as a Phils fan who still has his Richie Allen model glove from Little League this is a trying time. What's next ? Marlon Byrd ? An Eric Byrnes comeback ? Ruben shows up to bail Elijah Dukes out of the slammer ?
