I don't know about anybody else, but I hate the Cardinals because they have won 2 world series in the last decade by essentially backing into the playoffs and getting hot for 3 weeks. Similar to the reason I hate the NY Football Giants.

And they have the most obnoxious fans in baseball.

That slide by McRae isn't really a slide so much as he runs to the bag then uses it to launch is butt into the second baseman who is about two feet behind the bag. How does that not start a massive fight?

FYI- The Minnesota Twins won the 1987 World's Series. In order to get to a time period where the St. Louis Cardinals have won 3 World's Series you have to include the 1982 team.

Another quick theory on why most people may hate the Cardinals, by geography.

Always - bitter rivals of large base of Cub fans.
2012 - destroyed dreams of Washington, DC area, possibly along with leftover Expos fans
2011 - stomped on the heart of most of Texas.
2011 - ruined Milwaukee's best chance to get to World Series since 1982.
2011 - ruined season for 102-win Phillies.
2006 - 83 win squad beat Detroit's 95-win story (just three years after 2003 train wreck)

So by my count, you've got five teams that had World Series that got knocked out by the Cardinals just in the last seven years (plus the Cubs, who always hate them). Regardless of the methods, a lot of those fan bases may hold grudges.

Is it rational? Probably not. But since when is fandom rational?

The Cardinals talk trash about other teams, they're a team full of Brandon Phillipses.

As one Cardinal said, 'Gio [Gonzalez] looked like he didn't want to be out there. The guy has a 6-0 lead, then 6-1, and he's panicking out there. We smelled blood.'"

Skip Schumaker: "A lot of guys had the bright-eyed, deer-in-the-headlights look. And I'm not going to mention names, but we saw them taking a couple of deep breaths between pitches, and they were up four or five runs. When we saw that, we started talking. We weren't taking any deep breaths."

People rightly hate bad winners, which is what the Cardinals are.
