BP2012 App Now Available

by Joe Hamrahi

At long last, the Baseball Prospectus 2012 annual app is now available for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

Follow your favorite MLB teams and players throughout the season with Baseball Prospectus analysis that includes team overviews, player assessments, detailed stats, and 2012 projections for over 2000 players.

The app contains even more features such as:
  • Daily 2012 stats updates for every team, every game.
  • Every MLB player card has a “live” line for their actual 2012 stats (that updates whenever you open their card and have wireless access)
  • Sort 2012 projections by position or stat
  • Share updates with friends
The app will also continue to be updated throughout the season to include more players (and players who missed the book), new stat lines, and updated projections. Players will move to their new teams.  Comments will be updated. And new new features, like a more user-friendly horizontal view for the iPad will be added.

The regular price for the app will be $9.99. However, for the next 2 weeks only, we’re able to offer our loyal followers a discounted price of $4.99. We appreciate your business and hope you enjoy the perfect companion to your copy of Baseball Prospectus 2012.

You can download the app from the iTunes store at the following link: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/baseball-prospectus-2012-app/id517456344?mt=8

If this were available in March, that would be one thing....how much of BP's audience spends its money because they play in fantasy leagues (vs. just being a fan?)....

I'd say that plenty of our subscribers are just fans. The app is not a draft tool. It's essentially a digital application of the annual book (including the essays and comments) with updated daily stats.

Since this is version 1, it took the developers a little longer to design the functionality. We certainly will aim to get this out earlier next year.

Why do you guys rarely do Android versions?

This app is developed in conjunction with our book publisher so they wanted to get a finished iPhone product first. I've been told they plan to work on one for Android next year.

If you remember, we actually had a free Android app for free site articles, blogs, the podcast, etc. 2 years ago but Android changed their app requirements, and it was pulled.

So, we're not in any way ignoring Android.

So, probably asking the obvious, but does this app become invalid after 2012?

The stats update I presume? Yes, it will only update through 2012. In 2013 a new annual will be published with a new app.

Is there any chance that BP will have an app that would allow a user to just read the articles?

That's in our plans, yes. But we don't have a time frame for that. It's a little tricky with Apple and Android when you have a subscription based site.

Thanks, that would be awesome.

Does the subscription cover this? Is there any discount for subscribers?

This is a totally separate stand alone product that contains the book content and updated stats so no, subscriptions don't cover it. It's already been discounted to $4.99 for the two week period.

I have a philosophical problem with paying for the same content three times. I subscribe, I buy the annual, now when you put the annual out digitally, I have to buy it again.
No thank you.

The content on the site is completely different and separate from the book and the app. Always has been and always will be.

Some people like to have the book and the app. Some people who didn't buy the book, want the app. We're giving you options. That's all. We're not forcing anything on anyone.

I really like this app. The player info is more concise than what's available here on the website, which is nice for quick looks, and it's easier to use than the Kindle version of the book, which I've bought since it's been available. And the live updates to stats are terrific.

One amusing problem, though. When viewing Player Lists by team (Team -> Player List), players are listed in alphabetical order by last name, but their first names are put first, which makes the Dodgers player list look like this:

* Bobby, Abreu
* Alexi, Amarista
* Erick, Aybar

and so on. I'm getting used to the giggles, but please fix it in the next version. Thanks for the great effort!

Glad you liked it! That may be fixed within a week or so, along with a few other updates.
