Prospect Tracker Adds Leaderboards

by Bradley Ankrom

Over the weekend, we were busy improving Prospect Tracker 2.0, adding leaderboards and classification and league filtering. On the Prospect Tracker home page, you'll notice a new option — 2012 Leaders:

Clicking that link will take you to the brand new prospect leaderboards. Most other statistical leaderboards out there don't distinguish between prospects and organizational soldiers; the Val Pascuccis of the world are intermingled with the Bryce Harpers and the Manny Machados. Not here. The prospect leaderboards only consider players who were ranked among their organization's top 20 prospects by Kevin Goldstein this past offseason, cutting the pool from roughly 3,000 players on active minor league rosters to just 592 of the best and brightest.

Fantasy players will appreciate the classification and league filtering option available on the leaderboard page. Selecting an option from the drop-down menu allows you to quickly see which prospects are performing well at the highest levels of the minor leagues, giving you an edge on who the next big call-up could be.

We hope you're enjoying the new Prospect Tracker — be on the lookout for more exciting features in the coming weeks!

Seriously, this is just awesome. Among the great articles/analysis, this is a true distinguisher from the competition.

Oh, and before anyone mentions it... I'm aware that Jesus Montero doesn't appear on the leaderboards. He was dealt from New York to Seattle after the Mariners' Top 11 had been published but before the Yankees' list had come out. So he's missing. He still exists, though, I promise. In the Matrix.

if you filter by AA, Simon Castro shows up on the IP & hits leaderboards twice...I guess because he was on two different teams' lists? Not a big deal, but not sure that's what you want.

This is very cool, terrific stuff.

No, we don't want that. Should be fixed now, though... thanks for pointing it out!

This is great, but how do I find it on the site without bookmarking it? I'm sure it's available, but I tried to find it last week and gave up. Along those lines, I'm sure there's a lot of other good stuff on the site that remains hidden because of the unfriendliness of the site's layout.

We'll be rolling out a new navigation menu shortly that will contain links to all of our prospect tools. I know it's a pain to find at the moment, but you can always get to the Prospect Tracker via baseballprospectus.com/prospect_tracker.

Great stuff. Any plans to add a personal tracker that would allow us to track a set of prospects from a list we customize?

That's actually on the list of things I'd like to do... soon.

Thanks, these are great. One request: can you add a decimal point to the age category? It makes a difference whether someone is 19.1 or 19.9 in terms of development.

There will be a new navigation menu shortly; until then, you can always find it at baseballprospectus.com/prospect_tracker.

The ability to set up a customizable list would be a fantastic addition if it's something BP could add. I am sure there are many like me who are in fantasy and/or baseball simulation leagues where we have minor league systems. An ability to track our club's prospects would be extremely useful for those keeping a close eye on potential future major leaguers.

Firstly, thanks for the this. Let me second the request made by msurell. I'd like to see what you've already got going complemented by something like what First Inning provided in terms of tracking and monthly splits. Also, I show no results when filtering by Top 101 Prospects. I get results when filtering by team. Yet, I can't seem to filter by team and level (AAA, AA, Cal League, etc.). I'm not sure if that's supposed to be possible. I'm using Firefox 12 on OSX Snow Leopard.

No, multi-level sorts aren't currently available, but they will be soon.

Clicking on 2012 Leaders or Top 101 I'm greeted with no results.

Strange, I just tried it on Firefox/Lion and it worked fine. Can you send me a link to the page you're sent to when you click on those links?

I also get nothing. On Firefox and PC.
