Baseball Prospectus Book News

BP2012 Shipping Update

by Dave Pease

Update Feb 17: ‚ÄčKindle appears to be purchaseable again.  Thanks for your patience.

Update 2:30pm Pac: the Kindle version is now showing pre-order status at Amazon.  We're asking around.

Here are some updates on the status of Baseball Prospectus 2012.

  • Baseball Prospectus 2012 is now available for Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and in the iTunes bookstore. For all formats we know of, or to learn more about or order the book, please visit our page at

    http://bbp.cx/bp2012/

  • Amazon has announced they will be shipping the book on February 18, but we've heard from readers whose books are now shipping and will be delivered as early as February 17.  If you order from Amazon by then, you will probably get the book on or before its official publication date of February 21.  Click here to order the book from Amazon.

  • We generally know very little about Amazon.ca's plans but we will let you know if we learn anything.

  • BN.com reports that the book is in stock.  Click here to order the book from BN.com.

  • Books have been shipping all over the place, so your favorite local bookseller should have the book very soon if they don't have it already.

  • We're still looking at a PDF sales channel for the book.  More on that soon.

Is there a problem with the average pitch count numbers in the 2010 stats? They seem really high for almost every manager. (Got Kindle copy on 2/14)

I got it on my Kindle on Tuesday. I would just like to again thank you all for making the annual available on Kindle. Im disabled and my Kindle is much easier to transport than an a 600 page book, believe me.

Just called my local Barnes and Noble, and they have 6 in stock. Had pre-ordered on Amazon, but will be picking it up tomorrow to have it sooner than Amazon will deliver it:) One of my favorite days of the year, thanks BP!

Well now I went back in and it worked perfectly.. for some reason on both my kindle and through amazon.com it only gave me the option to pre-order the kindle version for about an hour -- paperback version was fine all along. Thanks, looking forward to reading. I've read the first part and A+ so far

Anyone else having trouble with the way the kindle displays the statistical info for each player? Mine shows it as a vertical row of headers, followed by a vertical row of stats. Though not impossible to interpret, it is difficult...

Reposting my question about the top 101 prospects in the book vs. online. Manny Machado is #6 and Dylan Bundy is #8 in the book (at least the iTunes version of it), but they are flipped in the list posted on the site on Monday. Which is right? And is this the only change?

It is the only change, and online is right. Bundy 6, Machado 8.

Help... I just received my Kindle edition and the tables are garbled. Does anyone know if that is my settings or do I need to complain to Amazon? BTW... Thanks BP this day, when the Prospectus arrives, is second only to Christmas. BIG :)

The tables needed to be split up to display on a kindle. Does that explain what you are seeing?

Amazon had me delete the book from my Kindle and resend it. It's fine now. Thanks. I have the hard copy and the digital format now... happiness :)

Is there still going to be an app for iDevices? Which "include(s) expanded statistics and sortable projections so you can create your own leaderboards by position or statistic [and] refer to the app in-season, as it will include statistical updates throughout 2012, will there still be periodic updates throughout the season." Or has this been replaced by the iBooks version? If so, will this one somehow be updated? Can't think of how this would happen, so I'm guessing not.

I'd also like to know as the tables on the eBook version is difficult to read. I don't know why they're breaking page breaks.

Sometimes the tables don't load right on the Kindle Android App but if I flip a couple of pages away and then come back they load right. I haven't had a problem on my 3rd Gen Kindle (now called the Kindle keyboard). The team prospectus tables do look bad though. Real small on the Android Kindle app and low resolution on the Kindle. It looks like these are images and not text so they don't scale right.

Regarding the team prospectus tables with my kindle, I can top on the table and zoom it larger...much easier to read and works great. I love the Kindle version!

What's the consensus on iBook (Apple) vs. Kindle?

I bought the iTunes version and the search function isn't working. Very annoying. Plus flipping through pages has been buggy (delayed, going backward when I want forward). Has Kindle had similar issues? I think I chose poorly.

Search works on the Kindle Android app. I haven't tried it on my actual Kindle. The search is definitely slow though. I haven't seen any issues with flipping pages. Have you had that issue with other iBooks? I assume that iBooks are just formatted files and that navigation is a function of the app and not the book.

Why am I getting a LinkedIn updtate via e-mail telling me

1) that Joe Hamrahi picked up the book last night and will enjoy time with it today and

2) that Joe Perrotto has a story for this week's USA Today Sports weekly?

I have never communicated with either Joe via LinkedIn or e-mail in my life so I find it pretty repulsive that either form of communication is being used for promotional purposes.

Is this being done with the knowledge of Baseball Prospectus?

Cease and desist

I have no idea what you're even talking about, so no, this is not being done with our knowledge. Who is the email coming from?

Why would I even have to pick up the book? I managed the production of it.

I've already sent a complaint to customer service. I will forward the e-mail for investigation after getting their reply.

linkedin sends irritating email. I get some on a regular basis I don't seem to be able to unsubscribe to.

We don't market at all through social networks unless you friend us, subscribe to us, follow us, or whatever mechanism is appropriate on your part to indicate interest.

Let me know what you find out for sure. I'm annoyed myself by this whole thing. I don't want people using my name or BP's name for anything without authorization. From what you sent to our customer service, it looks like Linkedin may be trying to use updates to link you to other people you may know. I've never seen this before.

I have forwarded the e-mail to customer service. There reply was

"we are not sending this information or providing any information to LinkedIn. We're sorry that this is outside of our control.

Our only suggestion is that you adjust your LinkedIn message settings to opt-out."

I'm not sure if I really find this an acceptable solution. If the messages are legitimate then there is some responsibilty on the part of the originator.

I am sure that Mr. Hamrahi doesn't want every Tweet he posts to be recircultated by Linked In and find mail boxes of people with whom he has never communicated with in any way, shape, or form.

Yes I can opt-out but that places the entire burden on the receipiant.

LinkedIn has an annoying tendency to start sending you mails they think you'll be interested in at various times without you indicating this interest. They've decided you are interested in baseball, or Joe Hamrahi is in your network, or someone who is in Joe Hamrahi's network is in your network, or etc. I have had the same thing happen to me in a different field.

What I did to resolve the problem is click the opt-out link at the bottom of the email. If you find this unacceptable, please do let LinkedIn know.

Still having trouble seeing the tables on Kindle Android. I deleted the book and re-downloaded it and still no luck. Very annoying not to be able to see the tables (I only see raw data in a column). More frustrating is that I can see a random table or two and it looks easy to read... please help!
