  • Michael Blanke, C, White Sox (High-A Winston Salem): 2-for-4, 2 HR (7), 2 R, 3 RBI, BB, K. 2010 draftee is big catcher with plus arm and some power; could be a sleeper in a system desperate for one.
  • Lorenzo Cain, OF, Royals (Triple-A Omaha): 5-for-5, 3 RBI, SB. 13-for-21 in last five games and hitting .317/.383/.505 overall; Melky's good year hurt him in 2011, but he deserves a chance.
  • Michael Fiers, RHP, Brewers (Triple-A Nashville): 9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K. 26-year-old confounds scouts with 1.21 Triple-A ERA in 59.2 innings despite lack of true plus pitch.
  • Reggie Golden, OF, Cubs (Short-season Boise): 2-for-4, HR (6), R, 3 RBI. Toolsy 2010 draftee has gone deep in three straight games; .236/.328/.409 overall.
  • Sonny Gray, RHP, Athletics (Double-A): 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. First-round pick has thrown 16.1 scoreless innings in Texas League; opponents are 10-for-56 (.179) against him without an extra base hit.
  • Liam Hendriks, RHP, Twins (Triple-A Rochester): 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K. Aussie with plus-plus command has just three walks in 49.1 innings, but with 52 hits allowed and 30 strikeouts, there are questions about his ability to miss big league bats.
  • Aaron Hicks, OF, Twins (High-A Fort Myers): 3-for-5, 2B, 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB. Just fourth multi-hit game in last 36; .234/.347/.355 overall as at some point we have to stop just talking about the tools.
  • Jeff Locke, LHP, Pirates (Triple-A Indianapolis): 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 8 K. Lefty with plus sinker and command has 1.93 ERA in four Triple-A starts; lining up for 2012 debut.
  • Joc Pederson, OF, Dodgers (Short-season Ogden): 4-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI, BB. If anything, he's getting hotter; 25-for-59 (.424) during 14-game hitting streak and .359/.433/.576 overall.
  • Jean Segura, SS, Angels (High-A Inland Empire): 2-for-5, RBI, K. First California League hits since late May thanks to hamstring issues.
  • George Springer, OF, Astros (Short-season Tri-City): 2-for-5, 2 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB. Small sample size to be sure, but I can't be the only one surprised that he has struck out just once in 18 professional at-bats.
  • Matt Szczur, OF, Cubs (High-A Daytona): 2-for-3, HR (5), R, 3 RBI; 2-for-3, RBI. Was dropped from leadoff spot and has ripped off three straight multi-hit games; .251/.275/.404 line since promotion has taken some bloom off the rose.
  • Kolten Wong, 2B, Cardinals (Low-A Quad Cities): 4-for-4, 3 R, RBI, BB, SB. 7-for-13 since return from DL and .343/.405/.508 in 43 pro games.

When will the Twins realize that a rotation full of #4 starters isn't a worthy aspiration?

I have thought the same thing for years. They want a staff full of Jeff Suppan.

Nobody wants that. They seem to want five Greg Maddux-es, when it takes a lifetime to find one.

You guys realize that's all Kyle Gibson was (pre-TJ) as well, right?

Yeah, but did they draft him as part of a change in philosophy?

God, those Twinkies are nuts.

Any reason Locke is posting pedestrian ground ball numbers with his good sinker?

Is there any more you can add about Fiers? He's old for the league, but then again he was 24 when he was drafted in '09 and has shot up the system. Despite the lack of a true plus pitch, he's striking guys out at a solid rate (9-10 K/9 at each level thus far). Hard to figure out exactly what we have here.

It's hard for the pros to figure out as well. There's some deception and very good location, but hard to see it really working in a big way at the next level.

Any thoughts on Paul Hoilman at Boise? Just broke the Hawks' homerun record with 17 and has walked a ton. However, the strikeouts are off the charts (101). Will he be eaten alive by higher level pitching?

Eaten alive is a good way to put it.

How likely is it that Springer makes the top 101 list?

This is at least the second time you've asked this. Do you have a bet going or something?

Top 101 list is out in early '12. I really hate ranking off the cuff, but I do like Springer.
