For Amusement Only 4/9

by John Perrotto

The first doubleheader of the season will be played Saturday night when the Rangers and Orioles play a twinbill at Oriole Park at Camden Yards after having Friday night's scheduled game rained out. I like the hot Orioles over the unbeaten Rangers in both games, based on the early odds, with Zach Britton +100 over Colby Lewis in the opener and Jake Arrieta +100 over Matt Harrison in the nightcap.

Those are two of six plays for Saturday. Another is in the afternoon as I'll go with the White Sox and Phillip Humber -135 over the Rays and Wade Davis. It is Humber's first start of the season and he drew raves from White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper for his improvement in spring training.

At night, I'll go with the Pirates and Charlie Morton -110 over the Rockies and Greg Reynolds. Morton also showed vast improvement in the spring then held the Cardinals to one run and three hits in six innings in winning his season debut.

I like the Reds and Bronson Arroyo -120 over the Diamondbacks and Daniel Hudson. I hate to go against Hudson but the Reds had won eight straight at Chase Field before losing Friday night in the Diamondbacks' home opener.

Finally, I'll take the Giants and Matt Cain -165 over the Cardinals and Jaime Garcia. It's a high number to lay against Garcia, who threw a shutout against the Padres in first start of the season. However, I've got to believe the Giants will be quite charged up after receiving their World Series rings in a pre-game ceremony.

I'll go with the Orioles up to -115 in the first game and -170 in the second game, the White Sox up to -150, the Pirates up to -120, the Reds up to -125 and the Giants up to -215.

Depending on line movement, I'll also take the Phillies and Roy Oswalt -110 or less over the Braves and Brandon Beachy, the Tigers and Phil Coke -145 or less over the Royals and Bruce Chen, and the Blue Jays -105 and Brett Cecil -105 or less over the Angels and Matt Palmer.

Friday was a winning day as the picks went 4-1 for +312 units. The winners were the Pirates +130 over the Rockies, the Marlins -117 over the Astros, the Blue Jays +108 over the Angels and the Indians +125 over the Mariners. The lone loser was the Mets -151 over the Nationals.

Season record: 21-19 (.537)

Units: -55
