Brandon Laird, OF/1B, Yankees (AFL: Desert Dogs): 2-for-5, 2B, HR (2), R, 4 RBI.

It was a tale of two seasons for Laird, who was among the top hitters in the Yankees system during the first two thirds of the year as he hit .291/.355/.523 for Double-A Trenton, but then things went downhill following a promotion to Triple-A, as he finished with a .246/.268/.344 line in 31 International League games. He's slugging .633 in a week's worth of Arizona games, but more notable is the defense, as the third baseman has been playing in left field and at first base for Phoenix. A bad third baseman, if this move is permanent, the offensive expectations become that much more.

Others Of Note:

  • David Bromberg, RHP, Twins (AFL: Saguaros): 2 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 2 K. Questions always loomed about how big righty's stuff would play at the upper levels; he's yet to prove the doubters wrong.
  • Charlie Culberson, 2B, Giants (AFL: Scorpions): 4-for-4, 2 2B, R, CS. Arguably the hottest hitter in the league; now 14-for-26 with five doubles and two home runs.
  • Eduardo Escobar, SS, White Sox (AFL: Saguaros): 2-for-5, R, RBI. In a system desperate for prospects, Escobar is a great sleeper as a plus defender up the middle with a line-drive bat.
  • Cale Iorg, SS, Tigers (AFL: Rafters): 2-for-4, 3B, HR (1), 2 R, 3 RBI. Big, athletic, toolsy, unfortunately just can't hit; 2011 could be make or break year.
  • Jackson Melian, OF (VEN: Leones): 2-for-4, R, RBI, CS. Was one of the hottest players ever to come out of Venezuela, but didn't get to big leagues after 1,141 minor league games. Now 30, just happy to see him in a box score.
  • Trayvon Robinson, OF, Dodgers (AFL: Desert Dogs): 3-for-5, 2 R, K, SB. Speedy outfielder has reached base 16 times in seven games, thanks in part to seven walks; looks more and more like future big league leadoff hitter.
  • Tony Sanchez, C, Pirates (AFL: Solar Sox): 1-for-3, HR (1), R, 2 RBI. Making up for lost time after missing much of regular season due to injury; good showing here re-accelerates timetable.
