Regarding Peavy, I didn't think players that were on the DL could be traded.

It's a commonly held misconception; they can be.

Yuniesky Betancourt was.

I hear this all the time, and then with Yuni's trade the misinformed suddenly fell silent. It was weird.

Maybe it's a Rotisserie rule or something... I'm not sure when/where I first thought that you can't trade a player on the DL.

You can't RELEASE a player on the DL.

Didn't Giambi just get released while he was on the DL?

Unfortunately for the Twins, all the shortstop defense in the world won't make a difference if every pitch gets hit 400 feet.

So, Peavy just waived his no-trade clause without compensation? No guarantee of that option year?

That seems interesting, and I wonder what the Union has to say about it, OR I wonder if Peavy might ask to be traded in the off season.

Why would the union care about Peavy waiving his no-trade? It's done all the time. His compensation just might be that he gets to pitch in meaningful games for the next 3 1/4 seasons instead of being 40% of the payroll of a bottom-basement team. Or maybe he just likes deep-dish pizza.

Or the lower income taxes in Illinois might make it entirely worth his while financially, but that's an off-the-cuff thought.

The Union would usually care about the option because he would be leaving money on the table. What is the option? $22M? This would help drive up average salaries and give the Union leverage in arbitration and free agency. However, because the option is still about 3 years away they may not have been as worried about it. The Union would apply pressure when a player is dealt with an option year that is very lucrative coming the following offseason.

Masterson will be a starter in Cleveland, right? Just like he was his whole minors career?

Yes, the stated plan is to begin stretching him: they planned on having him follow Sowers to help accomplish this because Sowers is usually a banana: goes from "solid" to "mush" in the space of three batters in the 5th or 6th. He held up better than usual, but Masterson still got three complete innings in.

With Tomo Ohka and his Magic Long Relief Show on the roster, that's probably the way the tandem will work for a while. But he's slated for the 2010 rotation according to Shapiro (via Castrovince), even if he doesn't make it to six innings by the end of 2009. (In September, they appear to be gearing for one start each by each of their marginal left-handers or new prospects, although I think Laffey will go twice because of seniority.)

I find the Peavy deal a little disturbing. For one, the Padres probably gave up equal or more talent than Philly did for Cliff Lee. Who said Peavy is going to pitch this year? What will Peavy do pitching in the AL in that CHW bandbox compared to the NL in SD cavernous park? Maybe he'll be fine and workout for the Whitesox, but this is no sure thing especially given the talent they gave up and the salary they took on. Achilles injuries aren't fun! I think the Padres may have just taken the Whitesox to school on this one on salary dump alone.

Obviously, the team doctors think he'll pitch again. The Sox definitely gave up more talent than the Phillies, but Cliff Lee doesn't have 3 years left on his contract.

As for pitching in Comiskey II. Peavy will pitch better than 90% of the league there. He won't put up the same numbers as he did in Petco, obviously, but your argument implies that the White Sox should never trade for a good pitcher because he'd have to pitch in a hitter's park. That makes pitching even more important.

I do agree they took on a big risk here—less so the ankle injury, and more because of the concern that scouts have had about Peavy's delivery and hoe it would affect his long-term health.

Yes, I thought Christina might touch on what we can expect from Peavy performance-wise given the rather stark shift in context; or whether his salary was a wise investment to take on.

I think that it was definitely worthwhile, even with the change in environments and the move to the tougher league, and accepting that there might be a few Blyleven-like moments for Peavy in The Cell. But even then, while the past is some sort of guide, what does it tell us when Peavy's struggled in Phoenix and Denver--two parks that are kind to right-handed power--but he's been good in the Gap or in Houston? It tells us there are limits, and that while Peavy's going to be worse than if he still got to call Petco home, his performance record is such that he's worth adding to a rotation in any environment.

The question for me is the relative cost in terms of prospects, because there's a reasonable chance that all four guys acquired are pitching for the Padres before Peavy's left Chicago's South Side. Perhaps it's a superficial thing, but it won't look good, sort of like when the Sox had both Melido Perez and Greg Hibbard before Floyd Bannister's time in KC was even up, only more so.

Add in the question of whether or not the Sox could have, say, added some other starting pitcher at $17 million or more this winter or next... do you give John Lackey that much in terms of AAV, when you'll also have to go longer than three years? Take an even bigger roll of the dice with Rich Harden? Do you punt on 2010 and wait for Cliff Lee or Roy Halladay and Josh Beckett the following winter?

It's been said before, and it bears repeating: for better or for worse, Williams doesn't punt. This was an interesting roll of the dice at present, and it might look back by 2012 when perhaps all four pitchers dealt might be pitching for the Padres. But it's of a piece with the man's work that it's a deal intended to help the Sox now, in 2010, and in the two deals subsequent, and in that light, it's a worthwhile win-now move.

I'll give Ken Williams credit for having big kahunas. It is solely my opinion that you do not deal that much, if anything at all, for a broke player. Is it true that the Whitesox gave up more in this deal than the one Peavy didn't approve in May? Just doesn't make sense to me, but I did read that Peavy had a very good bullpen session yesterday so this could work out. They are now saying Peavy could pitch this year.

I guess my beef with this deal is that they dealt a very good crop of pitching prospects to take on Peavy's salary and he may not pitch this season. Why not wait until the offseason? His cost was not going to go up.

Was the Peavy deal the BIGGEST (or at least the tallest) in history? Richard is 6'5"/240, Poreda is 6'6"/240, Carter is 6'6"/195,and Russell is 6'8"/250.

All the Chisox got in return was a puny 6'1"/180.
