March 1, 2009 Future ShockRays Top 11 Prospects
Five-Star Prospects Just Missed: Jeff Niemann, RHP; Alex Cobb, RHP; John Jaso, C Ranking Challenges: The Rays still have a significant amount of elite talent in the system, but with players graduating to the majors, some injuries, and a few below-expectation performances, it's not quite at the same depth as it's been in the recent past. After that top five, there are a number of players with a perilous balance between high upside and lower-level certainty.

Price above Upton and Longoria? I have a hard time believing Price will be more than an solid MLB pitcher- putting him at the top equates to a perennial Cy Young contender. Was this close- or am I missing the boat?
I can't say I buy Price over Upton either.
With you, Upton and Longoria have proven more at a higher level. But Price is sick.
I dont know what I would put Price over Upton and Longoria..I might have Longoria #1 on the list..but to say "I have a hard time believing Price is more than a solid MLB pitcher" is laughable.
Hard to figure out how Kevin ranks these top talents under 25 sometimes. Must be it's weighted heavily toward pitchers, because I can't figure out Price over either Upton or Longoria.
Is it really all that laughable? An awful lot of top, can't miss pitchers end up getting hurt, lose their ability to throw strikes, etc., etc. How long ago was it that Phil Hughes and Edwin Jackson were can't miss prospects? Yusmiero Petit? Brandon McCarthy? Jeremy Sowers?
none of those guys were on Price's level except for Hughes..and its too early to write him off already
True, but how about Mark Prior, then? He certainly was on Price's level (if not above it).
I'm just saying, if David Price ends up having Chris Carpenter's career instead of Johan Santana's, it would still be a pretty nice find.
I guess you're speaking to injury potential here, but Mark Prior's age-22 season is still asking WTF right now. The guy went 18-6 with a 2.43 ERA (41 Stuff and 7.9 WARP3). If Price can touch that and avoid the overuse that (perhaps) doomed Prior, I think he'll be just fine. You've got to think that the babying of 2009 will be safer than Dusty from 2002-2006.
So do you compare every highly rated pitching prospect to guys that have gotten hurt or busted??
I agree. I have seen Price pitch at the MLB level last year quite a bit, and I have to say that I was not THAT impressed. There is something about him that makes me think 'good, but not great', although it is hard to put into words. His minor league numbers in '08 weren't phenomenal either, in my opinion. He struck out less than a hitter per inning at every level except high-A.
My bet is that he ends up as a solid 2nd or 3rd starter if he stays healthy. Although something about him yells 'Liriano' at me as well.
