Injury Cost: $18.2 million

Trend: Neutral. The Mariners really haven't been hit by many major injuries over the last three years, and the most significant ones they had (to Erik Bedard and J.J. Putz) both came last season. Give Rick Griffin and his staff credit for handling Putz with care, allowing him to get healthy, which helped the club then reap a decent return in trade. Another potential Felix Hernandez disaster was averted as well. Perhaps of bigger concern to Seattle fans is that the Mariners had the third-fewest DL days of any team, yet still lost over 100 games.

What I find really interesting is that Ichiro predicted that playing CF would be hard on his legs, and then he played CF and it was hard on his legs.

This man knows his own body better than anyone else in baseball.

I haven't "passed off." Brad's doing half of them to make sure that the workload is manageable and that I can keep my eye on the injuries in spring training. Not only does Brad know his stuff, but he understands the systems I use to rate the players. I think you'll love his work.

Silva probably isn't the worst pitcher in their rotation. He just has the worst contract.

I would argue that Washburn is the worst pitcher.

gave Felix a 'very high' grade on his durability, and they have a lot more evidence to support that conclusion than just something about him blowing up like Jack Bauer.

If you'd read the start of the THR series, Will described the 14 (I believe) variables that goes into his system, including the actuarial tables he uses. I doubt Driveline Mechanics uses something as sophisticated (and, in fact, upon browsing their article my doubts are confirmed). BP remains data-driven, even in Will's set of articles, which makes me more confident in their conclusions than in conclusions like Driveline's, which basically say nothing: "Though I have reservations about the amount of horizontal shoulder abduction in Felix's delivery, overall I have to give him a very high grade for both his performance and his durability. I think that with proper conditioning and reasonable use of his arm in games that Felix has a good chance of having a long career in the majors without many injuries."

Dollars lost is simple salary lost to DL.

Injury cost is MORP/180 x days lost.
