Welcome to the festivities!

We're here to announce the winners of the 8th Annual Internet Baseball Awards. Over 700 knowledgeable cyberspace baseball fans – a new record – participated in this effort to select the baseball players whose 1999 seasons were most deserving of honors.

This year over 99% of our voters entered their choices through our comprehensive net balloting system, updated for your voting pleasure by baseballprospectus.com web intern Dave "Tha Rinky-Dink Naughty Pirate" Pease. Wu-hoo!

The point system for the balloting was as follows:

  • Player of the Year Ballots: 14 points for 1st place votes, 9 points for 2nd place votes, 8 for 3rd, etc., down to 1 for 10th.

  • Pitcher of the Year Ballots: 10 points for 1st place votes, 7 points for 2nd place votes, 5 for 3rd, 3 for fourth, and 1 for fifth. (This is the one award where our point system differs from the BBWAA point system, since we use a longer ballot.)

  • Rookie of the Year Ballots: 5 points for 1st place votes, 3 for second place votes, and 1 for third.

  • Manager of the Year Ballots: 5 points for 1st place votes, 3 for second place votes, and 1 for third.

This year's awards were helped along by the fine folks at the Baseball Prospectus, the exclusive sponsors of the Internet Awards for the last several years, as well as the owners of the new mini-blimp that will be covering Australian baseball live this winter for ESPN13. All of us associated with the Awards greatly appreciate the work of the voters, especially the ones who voted while standing on their heads.

The 1999 Internet AL Player of the Year was won fairly easily by the Red Sox' Pedro Martinez. He is the first pitcher to win an Internet AL Player of the Year award, and only the second pitcher, after Greg Maddux in 1995, to win any Internet Player of the Year award. Derek Jeter, the winner of the 1996 Internet AL Rookie of the Year award, finished second after a ninth-place finish last season, while Nomar Garciaparra, who won the 1998 Internet AL Player of the Year award as well as the 1997 Internet AL Rookie of the Year award, finished a strong third. The 1999 awards mark the first time that no corner infielder or outfielder has appeared among the top 3 vote-getters in the Internet AL Player of the Year awards. The best hitter in the league in 1999, Manny Ramirez, finished fourth, while his teammate, Roberto Alomar, finished fifth. Another pair of teammates, Ivan Rodriguez and Rafael Palmeiro, finished sixth and seventh respectively. Ken Griffey Jr. finished eighth, maintaining his record of having finished in the top ten every year of Internet Player of the Year balloting in which he has had 501 plate appearances.

The 1999 Internet NL Player of the Year race was won by Braves third baseman Chipper Jones, who easily outdistanced Astros slugger Jeff Bagwell. Mark McGwire, last year's Internet NL Player of the Year, finished third after he hit 60+ home runs for the second year in a row. Mike Piazza, who won the Internet NL Player of the Year award in both 1996 and 1997, finished fourth. The highest ranking pitcher was Randy Johnson, who finished fifth. Barry Bonds, who had finished among the top four in every previous year of Internet NL Player of the Year balloting, finished twenty-first after an injury riddled season.

The 1999 Internet AL Pitcher of the Year goes to – duh! – Pedro Martinez. The 10 voters who did not place Pedro first on their ballots are hereby excommunicated from the church of baseball. This is Pedro's second Internet Pitcher of the Year award; he also won the 1997 NL Internet Pitcher of the Year award. Mike Mussina finished second, his highest finish ever in the Internet Pitcher of the Year awards; he had finished among the top 10 vote-getters 4 times previously. David Cone finished fourth for the second year in a row; he also has finished in the top 10 four times previously. Mariano Rivera, clearly the dominant closer in the league this past year, finished a strong third, while Jeff Zimmerman finished seventh, the highest ranking ever in the Internet Pitcher of the Year awards for a middle reliever not named Mariano Rivera. Tim Hudson, who finished tenth, was the highest ranking American League rookie starter in either the Player of the Year or the Pitcher of the Year race.

The Arizona Diamondbacks may not have given Randy Johnson much run support this past season, but IBA voters gave Johnson a huge amount of support as he won the 1999 Internet NL Pitcher of the Year handily. This is Johnson's second Internet Pitcher of the Year award; he also won the 1995 Internet AL Pitcher of the Year award. Johnson and Pedro Martinez are the first players ever to win Internet awards in both leagues. The race for second place was the closest race we've had had high on the ballot in Internet Baseball Award voting, as Mike Hampton won second place by only five points over Kevin Millwood. Astros Billy Wagner and Jose Lima finished fourth and fifth respectively, making the Astros only the second team to be awarded 3 of the 5 top spots in an Internet Award voting (the Braves previously accomplished this feat in the 1993 Internet NL Pitcher of the Year voting). Greg Maddux, who has won four Internet NL Pitcher of the Year awards, finished sixth. Scott Williamson was the highest ranking rookie in Internet Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year voting this year as he finished in eighth place.

The Internet AL Rookie of the Year race was won by Royals rookie centerfielder Carlos Beltran, who edged out Texas' middle relief phenom Jeff Zimmerman and Oakland's new ace pitcher Tim Hudson. Beltran probably wasn't the most valuable rookie in the league, but his tools and potential were evident from day one as he excelled defensively and hit for both average and power offensively while posting more than 700 plate appearances. Most of the rest of the votes went to pitchers – in addition to Hudson and Zimmerman, Mariners starter Freddy Garcia (fourth) and Blue Jays closer Billy Koch (sixth) also recieved substantial suppport. The other everyday players who showed up on ballots fairly frequently were minor league veteran Brian Daubach, who finished fifth after the Red Sox finally gave him a shot at the majors, and another Royals rookie, Carlos Febles, who excelled in the first half but was slowed significantly by injuries in the second half.

Reds rookie relief pitcher Scott Williamson, whose dominating pitching and flexibility helped make the Reds contenders, easily won the 1999 Internet NL Rookie of the Year award. Warren Morris, who quietly played a solid second base for the Pirates all season, finished second, while Preston Wilson, a productive young outfielder whose strike zone knowledge is still a bit shaky, finished third. Pirates starter Kris Benson, who was the best rookie starter in the National League, finished fourth. Meanwhile, Ronnie Belliard finished fifth after showing signs of stardom as the Brewers new second baseman, while Erubiel Durazo earned a sixth place finish as a result of the incredible road he took from the Mexican League to a starting first baseman's job in the postseason. Minor league veterans Joe McEwing and Benny Agbayani took seventh and eighth place.

Jimy Williams was the easy winner of the 1999 Internet AL Manager of the Year award after successfully juggling a large supporting cast around Pedro Martinez and Nomar Garciaparra to make into the postseason. Meanwhile, Art Howe's successful management of a young team into contention earned him second place, while Joe Torre's steady hand on the Yankees rudder after he returned from battling cancer gave him a third place finish. Johnny Oates and Mike Hargrove, the two other managers who lead their team to the postseason, finished fourth and fifth respectively.

In our closest race for first place this year, Bobby Cox edged out Jack McKeon for the Internet NL Manager of the Year Award. Cox's usually dominant Braves had to overcome a myraid of health problems as well as off-seasons from the team's Pitcher of the Year winners, but Cox successfully managed the pieces that remained to yet another championship. McKeon's strong second place finish is due to his keeping the low payroll Reds in contention through the final day of the season and his unusually effective management of the Reds' bullpen. Larry Dierker, who lead the Astros to another division title despite an in-game brain seizure that forced him to miss a month, finished a strong third, while Buck Showalter and Bobby Valentine, the other two managers who carried their teams to the playoffs, were voted to fourth and fifth place finishes respectively.
